...today I removed from my PC the last PATA hard disk. Installed 250GB WD drive in 2007 and retired it today, still working but replaced with a 2TB SATA drive. Don't know what I'm going to do with this box of big ribbon cables anymore....
Wow, you still had a PATA drive? When I upgraded to my i7-2600k I went to all SATA ports and was forced to drop my last PATA drive (which was a DVD burner, not even an HD). That was like 6 years ago!

I actually thought I had 2 PATA drives in this system... turns out one of them was already a SATA HDD, plus 2 solid state drives.
Definitely got my money's worth out of this 250GB WD drive though. I've got enough spare crap laying around to maybe build a legacy system with Win98 on it to run a few old favorites. Still have my Voodoo 2 card in a box somewhere for some 3dfx hardware-accelerated goodness.
Otherwise I'll just take it to the range and shoot it.
Congrats Clyde lol, I recently cleaned out all my old PC parts and threw out a bunch of those old SCISI and IDE cables, SATA cables are so small in comparison but makes keeping airflow in the case so much easier.
Wow. I think only my first two builds used those PIA ribbon cables, been SATA ever since happily.
Welcome to the 21st century....I think.

yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking without actually coming out and exposing myself as a Mechwarrior nerd.... oh well maybe that news it out already anyway
I still have the MW2 "Platinum Editions" with MW2, MW2 Ghost Bear, and MW2 Mercs all in one Jewel case, just staring at me on the shelf...
When did I get outed as a Mechwarrior nerd? I am so embarrassed right now... If i start playing something hip like GTA or Counterstrike will I be cool again?
Jedi, do you remember way back when there was a "phonebook -styled' magazine (PC Shopper?!?) at the Grocery Store that contained all the latest parts for your 386/486 PC Build?? And we had a PC Part Swap Meet under the bridge, on 3rd Saturdays, in Downtown Dallas where you could swap/buy/trade parts. Got myself a fancy EGA Video card that did 16 colors that way. Woot!
Yeah, I chuck anything that says "Built for Windows 98" on it now. HA!

Yes, I kept my Voodoos as "historical artifacts". But, I have nothing left that can run one. And, making it work would be an effort (if I could do it at all).
Sometimes, I wish I had kept an example of each CPU/motherboard architecture in my collection. But, most eventually got given away or pitched.
I did keep a "desktop" I designed and built from scratch in approximately 1976-78 (8bit processor and 2K of memory, toggle switches and keyboard input, programmed in binary 0s and 1s). Literally handed out cigars at work the day I after completed it and got it working right (took a 1.5 years from start to finish). And, I also have that first little Radio Shack desktop (8bit CPU and 12K memory in a keyboard) that replaced it in my small collection.
I still have my VooDoo2 and VooDoo3 Cards, and about 15 others in a box.
I also have a stack of about 20 PATA Drives, I use a PATA to SATA Adapter (also have a PATA to USB Adapter), anyways... connect the PATA to SATA Adapter to the front of the drive, open side of case, connect SATA Cable to other end of Adapter, Connect Power, Boot.

I never saw PC Shopper at those stores, but it was at most places that carried magazines.
It was the "Modern Bride" for techies.
Even the old PC gaming mags came in at hundreds of pages. Part of it was tons of ads but part was they had that much to read.
