I'm getting a playlist together for a 5k tomorrow morning. I've worn out Rush and most 80's for the time being, getting into some Southern Rock. This one is currently at the top of my list...

biggrin

I don't mind a little Skynyrd, it's just that so much of it is overplayed (hearing "Sweet Home Alabama" for the millionth time). But I've still included it on my playlist, as well as "Devil Went Down to Georgia", "Flirtin' With Disaster", etc.

Here's a couple that may not qualify (I dunno) but they come soooo close, IMO...

From Atlanta (mostly black)...

Is this Country or Southern Rock?

Does Texas Boogie qualify?

Love the Outlaws. Green Grass and High Tides I can rock to all day.

Have all the southern rock music in my collection. 38 Special and the Outlaws are my favorites.

^ Great song, JimK! thumbsup

Speaking of .38 Special, I had "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" as on of my first 12 (or whatever) cassettes for $0.01/piece from Columbia House. Those were the (rip-off) days! biggrin

Also plenty of Skynyrd on 8-track, one switched tracks in the middle of "Freebird"! eek2

Is Southern Rock still alive today? And I mean with mainstream audiences and not underground local band stuff.

I admit that I'm posting these to watch them, my bandwidth is being throttled (due for a monthly refresh) and I can't watch them on YT since the lowest quality is 360p, here I can watch them smoothly at 144p. smile

Haha, they're one of my favorites of all time. I've been playing guitar for almost 40 years, and I've always looked up to the guitarists in Skynyrd. For most of their existence they used three guitars. I love the way they wove those three together, without stepping on each other. It's beautiful really, in my view.

Sure, Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird get too much airplay, and I bet the vast majority of folks couldn't name another Skynyrd song. Well, maybe Simple Man, That Smell or Gimme Back My Bullets, but beyond that I have my doubt. But there is so much more to them than the mainstream hits. I'll name a few of my (not-so-well-known) favorites

Needle and the Spoon
You Got That Right
I Know a Little
Saturday Night Special
On the Hunt
Cry for the Bad Man
Ballad of Curtiss Loew
Preacher's Daughter
Poison Whiskey

So many more. Great band. Top three for me. But I get that others won't agree.

Semi-interesting sidebar.... Ed King (Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama et al) attended my grandma's church after he left the band. The man himself showed me Sweet Home Alabama, and showed me how he played all of the little fills in that song.

Does the hate with Skynyrd have to do with being way over-played or with the actual style of their music?

You are absolutely right DBond. In fact, the only song that gets a lot of air time on the "classic rock" radio stations at least in my area is "Sweet Home Alabama". My guess is that "Freebird" gets less air time mostly due to its length. What's funny about "Simple Man" is that it was a big hit for Skynyrd but I have never heard it played on the radio.

I suspect the answer might lie somewhere in the middle. I completely understand if someone doesn't like their music. But I wonder if some folks base that on the two or three songs they've heard...over and over and over. If you can listen to the other songs I listed and STILL don't like it then well, it's not your sort of music.

Tuesday's Gone is another that I could have listed that has enjoyed some mainstream success.

What I would find hard to believe is that there are any guitarists that hate Skynyrd.

Last time I heard Tuesday's Gone on the radio it was Metallica's cover.

Which is itself 20 years old now.

Heh. "Freebird" is like "Stairway to Heaven". "Oh no, not again!" eek

Yet, without those songs in their appropriate themed playlists, they would be incomplete.

These overplayed songs will always have a place on my playlists and it never fails, I'm only tired of hearing them until I actually start hearing them again. In other words, I never truly tire of them. smile

++++++++++

Great stories, DBond! cheers I have a couple Skynyrd-related stories (none nearly as good as yours) and I'll come back after dinner and post them.

Ok, here goes (I'll keep it as short as possible)...

Story #1: Love interest, you knew this was coming. smile

Summer of '84, between 11th and 12th grade. Dating my wife (my only real girlfriend) for about half a school year and getting cold feet, feeling smothered. The real problem was that the relationship wasn't...progressing...like I wanted. Worse was that I was complaining to my friends about it, getting laughed at between tokes. Lol. Gave her the speech, "Let's take a break, a little space, I'll see you back at school after summer vacation." She took it ok (no drama), maybe more disappointed than I expected. Well, good, it would give her something to think about.

I was good for a couple of days but she called my bluff and made no attempt to contact me (remember corded phones?). Uh oh, did I fork up? Then about a week later, one fateful night after my parents had gone to bed, I locked my bedroom door and made a mistake...

I had two white matching pump hairspray bottles, one full of hairspray, the other full of whatever cheap hard liquor I could swipe from the cabinet (dad loved cheap K&B Drug Store gin, I'd replenish with water to the marked line). Popped in a Skynyrd 8-track (their debut “Pronounced...” I believe) and by the time “Tuesday's Gone” came around, I was kinda gone myself. Then it hit me and I knew, I was going to cave...completely.

Lesson is, if you're playing chicken with a relationship and you don't want to be the one who flinches, don't drink and listen to “Tuesday's Gone” (or modern day equivalent)! biggrin Seriously, that song will always be in my musical holy of most holies, one of only a handful that really send me back in time.

++++++++++

Story #2: Middle School (5th or 6th grade?), a good friend takes me into his older sister's room and shows me a concert ticket to see Lynyrd Skynyrd at LSU (Assuming the Assembly Center [basketball arena]). Their plane crashed on the way to that concert, she couldn't part with it for a refund (bet she still has it).

I remember the crash was a really big deal around these parts.

BTW, lot's of interesting connections between Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special, besides Ronnie/Donnie Van Zant.

++++++++++

Not something I'd want to run or workout to, but what a great damn song (as are the other Skynyrd songs posted)!...

It's kind of funny, maybe 20 years or so ago I had a few of their CDs, and a 3-disc best of set that had all the songs you listed and then some (Double Trouble, White Dove, a shortened acoustic version of Free Bird, etc), and it was almost like one day I put a disc in and said "I don't like any of these songs any more!"

The classic rock stations up here play all the songs you listed. In fact, you can tune in to them and odds are that at least one of them will be playing Skynyrd, Aerosmith, AC/DC, The Doobie Brothers, or 1 or 2 other bands. That's the main reason I don't listen to the radio, I doubt I like 1 in 50 songs they play. Aerosmith in their drug years is the only band of those 4 that I can somewhat stomach LOL.

It's cool Phil. There's no accounting for taste. I don't like the Grateful Dead or Kiss, but everyone else seems to like them.

MarkG, I'm afraid that's my only cool Skynyrd story. Wait there's one more...

Back in like 1992 we were playing a gig and some drunk guy in the crowd starts yelling Free Bird. We were essentially a grunge cover band playing Nirvana, STP, Pearl Jam and that sort of stuff. We were in the middle of Black Hole Sun if I recall correctly. Well, the guy keeps saying it and soon half the crowd is chanting/screaming Free Bird. On stage, we're all looking at each other with grins on our faces. I mean, Free Bird is a jam we've played a thousand times in the practice cave.

The singer smiles and nods and I unplugged and jumped off stage to find a beer bottle. I mean there's no slide in grunge and I didn't have one with me. So I find a hot chick with a beer, I ask her for it (manners, you see) she gives me the bottle, I guzzle what's left and break it over the corner of my Marshall stack. So rock and roll. I take the bottle neck and slip it over my finger and the whole band stops dead. It;s like we had rehearsed it. At this point I'm laughing hysterically. I have a beer bottle slide with a very jagged edge over my finger. The jagged part is at such an angle that if I hold it normally it would play the adjacent strings and it would sound like crap. So I have to extend the wrist out and away so the slide just contacts the E string so I plug the Les Paul back in and start playing Free Bird's opening. The place goes freakin' nuts. I mean, we are a grunge band and everyone there is for that music, as it's the in-thing back then. But when they heard the opening notes to Free Bird they just went crazy. What a night smile

I've tried a few times to get into the Dead but they're just not my cup of tea. As far as Kiss goes I only like their hit songs.

Ditto. The Dead just leave me wondering "what's the big fuss?"

I feel the same about KISS' showmanship, but I liked a handful of their songs.

Oh in follow-up to the story in my last post, we ended up just taking requests for the rest of the night. We thought the bar's owner would be pissed as he paid us to play the grunge stuff. But when we were loading the truck afterwards he came up to us and told us that our version of Kashmir was the best he'd heard and it was his favorite song. Gave us an extra $100 and invited us back in two weeks. He wanted us to do a Zep set. So we did. I love Zep smile

LOL

Personally I love Rush even though they've really not made anything memorable in my opinion after about the year 2000. I remember listening to "Clockwork Angels" and then about 2 weeks later I could barely remember what I listened to. None of it stuck.

DBond, that last story was awesome! biggrin

BTW, we did a Zep tribute band last year (ZoSo) and thought they were great.

Musician board discussing this band (with nice pics)...

When I have time, I need to update (replace) some broken-linked pics in a few threads here.

++++++++++

Rush sucks. Lol.

I know people who *really* dislike anything Rush. That's cool, there's allot of music I don't like, it's all preferences. When asked what's the appeal, I guess because I was a messed up weird kid (not uncommon) and Rush was kinda weird. It was by chance, really, had a cousin ditching all his 8-tracks (including all Rush through Moving Pictures), sold them to me cheap. Hey, what's this? That's pretty good.

PM, I've said it before, I wish you would have gone to the previous "Time Machine" concert vs. "Clockwork Angels", you would have enjoyed it allot more. Still, CA was worth it to me to make the trip to Orlando, also spent a day Disney. Probably my last since they no longer cater to people who want to walk.

++++++++++

I'm listening to Skynyrd and .38 Special all day today while I hang blinds and shudders. tuner

LOL! Yeah the demographics of the audience for the Rush concert I went to in Ft. Lauderdale was interesting. It was entirely white and I'd say the median age was probably around 40-45.

TBH any song that is well-liked and really quite good can be ruined by overexposure.

I know of many songs that I've heard people say they hate and the ONLY reason they could express as to why was "heard it too much." Often they'll admit they liked it the first few times they heard it, but after the dozenth time got sick of it.

DBond, I don't play, only a Fender acoustic to unwind, and I'm not very good (no rhythm or sense of timing). I had an Ibanez once with a Peavey amp, sold it (and quit guitar lessons) to buy an engagement ring. I sucked anyway, but I do miss trying. Now I'm playing around on my mom's keyboard in my man cave, I suck at that too. smile

However, I really do enjoy live performances, looking on with appreciation and envy.

I found that webpage because I was looking for reviews before seeing ZoSo.

Personality? I'm simple (it would *really* show in PWEC) and when I find something I like, I usually don't tire of it, at least not indefinitely.

With the continuing decline of traditional ad-driven radio, this phenomenon of songs being overplayed to death is not quite as bad as it used to be. Most people now just listen to the music they want to hear on demand via streaming or on their portable device.

Well, even noodling around with an acoustic means you're a player smile

About the guitar/amp for an engagement ring.... I would say too bad and that sucks, except in your case you're still with her right? So that gets a pass. When I was married we went through some tough times financially and the ex would 'demand' that I sell some of my guitars. She said why do you need all of those guitars, you never play half of them. Women! So I got a side job doing computer repair and lied to her about selling the guitars to shut her up. She's gone, but I still have all of the guitars thumbsup

Oh yeah, I kept the girl and she still has the ring (about to get it professionally cleaned and inspected, Zales). smile

I play guitar like I lift weights, do it all the time but I wouldn't tell a real gym rat/bodybuilder that I lift. I guess the best answer for both would be, "Very casually". smile

I was taking guitar lessons at the same time as a good friend of mine (we had the same teacher). He was in our (wife and I) HS graduating class (1985), it was obvious right away who had the talent. He now plays in a local band, the guy far right in my first pic below (best pic I could find). The second pic is the old downtown stage as in the first pic, now there's a much nicer one. I understand he's really good (doesn't surprise me), going to catch a show this summer and see for myself. I think they play the kind of music in my Funk thread.

Wait, you weren't the one playing "Sultans of Swing" on a previous thread, were you?

This weekend we did allot of trailer pulling, long drives hauling a riding mower and then a refrigerator. I brought my older iPod Shuffle loaded with the Southern Rock I've been listening too, Skynyrd, .38 Special, Allman Bros., Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels, Hank Jr., Blackfoot, etc. The hits and then some.

With just about every song I hear, "Put that one on my Shuffle. Oh, that one too. Definitely that one" and so on. I don't think I can overplay the classics to the point that I can't enjoy them every so often. Except maybe for “Hotel California”, if I ever hear *that* one again! Nah, I'm listening to the album now, still enjoy it.

We're now looking for Classic Southern Rock tribute/cover bands in the BR area, I'll post a thread if we find any we like.

I'm still waiting for a Southern Rock cover band, or at least the Black Jacket Symphony to play a Skynyrd tribute in BR.

I'm glad we had no concert scheduled for tonight, would have missed it due to weather (snow turning to ice).

I like them a lot Mark so for me it is hard to think of them as one hit wonders even though that is probably the case, I still play a GS Pandora channel a couple of times a month and rock out smile

Battleship Chains (this got a lot of video & airplay) & Railroad Steel off of the same album

The only other time they came close to a hit was the cover Hippy, Hippy Shake from the film Cocktail

Dan Baird has some really nice stuff after he went solo (and with his band Homemade Sin)

I Love You Period from his first solo album

I saw them at the La Vida Hot Springs bar in Carbon Canyon that no longer exists AFTER they had their big success. I was not going to go since it had become a pretty seedy place but I had several friends that just had to go see them. It was actually kind of surreal at the time since I didn't expect them to be playing such a limited, and quite frankly crappy, venue.

I Love Skynyrd no doubt but also love Pink Floyd, Rush , Molly Hatchet, Yes, Kansas, Boston, Blackfoot, Zeppelin, Sting/Police, REO, Dixie Dreggs, Hendrix, Van Halen, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels and many more. I guess it is just the music you grow up with, but I stopped listening to any new music in the mid to late 90s. As my parents would have said in the 70s, all this new music is garbage. LMAO, 30 years after the 70s and I say the same thing, after the 90s, all this new music is garbage!!! Hey those that like it after the 90s, more power to you. I will stick with my 70s - 90s Rock. Here is a picture(or 2, I liked my toes in the second, when it comes to dancin i have 2 left feet! yep ) showing how Big of a Skynyrd Fan I was back then. I painted this banner by hand(think it took 6 weeks of evenings before the show) looking at the back of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Second Helping album(yes vinyl was the still the bomb then) styling the letters from the small pack of Skynyrd Smokes. I sneeked? it in folded and tucked in the back of my pants and under my shirt to their Live PPV Concert at the Fox Theater in Atlanta GA 1993. The funny thing is that at the door the bouncers were patting down all the guys as they entered and when I was patted down the guy felt it and said "What the Hell is that"?? I told him an showed the little pieces of rope I had to hang it from the balconey and he said" Cool, get in there and hang it up." He didn't notice the pint of Wild Turkey I had tucked in the front of my pants waistband, LMAO. So I went in and hung it from the Balcony Front. Here are a couple on panaramic(14' long) pics of my Redneck Skynyrd Banner. That banner has been folded up in my closet since 93, I think I may have unrolled it once since the concert. It is a little worse for wear(folded marks) but it brings back good memories of a much more simple time. If you are the PC Police and get offended, go Fu#k yourself. I never bought the PPV Tape(yes VHS was the Bomb back then) to see if it was in the recording. Anyway I have been a Drummer from age 13 and LOVE playing to Skynyrd(especially Second Helping, especially the Railroad Song) and many other Southern Rockers. Here is one on my favorites from "Nuthin Fancy". I guess that is what I have always Loved about Skynyrd, they were Nuthin Fancy, they didn't act like Nuthin Fancy, but they Loved to Rock n Roll!!

Edit, just bought Lynyrd Skynyrd The complete Muscle Shoals Recordings! Here we go again, LOL. Haven't sat at the Kit in 6 months. Seeing as I am off tomorrow I may have to bang out a few songs. Look out neighbors!! LMAO, here is my kit.

So I agree, Southern Rock, Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!

Awesome story, banner and drums, Blade_Meister! thumbsup

I've been in the Fox Theatre only once, to see the Pink Floyd Laser Show back in 2008 (Richard Wright had just died, they quickly added a tribute). I miss eating at The Old Spaghetti Factory, last time I tried it was closed down.

Speaking of "Southern Rock", which current day bands would be a good representative of that genre? I can't think of even one.

Well, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band and Blackfoot are playing in Atlanta in September, Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour starts on May 14, 2018. It is just Gary Rossington left from the original 70's Band. Granted they all live that long. You gotta Love Rickey Medlocke, he will be playing double duty that night. I can't imagine hearing him play Train, Train and Freebird on the same night at the same Concert. Wow, that would be awesome. Hate to say it but I have a very nice Audio System and I just crank it up at the house instead of going to concerts anymore. Or better yet, crank it up on my headphones in the next room and sit in on the kit and jam right along with them! It's that whole getting old thing I guess, I am just done with the bother of concerts. Anyway, I think the Southern Rock thing is still going, but you just have to look a little harder to find out who is doing what. salute

By "current day bands" I meant bands that started within the last 10 years or so. smile

I know there are several legacy/classic bands that are still touring.

Actually, there is only one Southern Rock Band that I am aware of that was started in the late 90s and became wildly popular in the 2000s & up to this day. The Band is called
Third Day and it started in Marietta Ga. and it is a Southern Christian Rock Band that is absolutely awesome. They Rock for The Lord and are great musicians. Check em out, They are special.
If you only watch one of these watch the last one called Thief, it is Awesome. Enjoy.

No one has ever accused me of that before Sir. Of course I was playing around. I think I see your point, there are no Southern Rock Bands to carry the genre forward. To me that is sad.

THe way that country music is played today, Skynyrd would be a Country Band now. HA.

BTW, my favorite song off Nuthin' Fancy is "On the Hunt"

Wow, I completely forgot the "Highway Song". I am ashamed. This song is so awesome. If you Love Southern Rock then this Song has to rank right up there with the best. Rickie Medlocke and Jakson Spires hit the top of their game with this one.If you have a nice audio system, I encourage you to go crank up this whole album, Blackfoot, Strikes. I Love the drum beats, but son, those Guitars are Smokin something Fierce on this album. They just don't write them or play them like this anymore, I am sad to say. Enjoy!!!

Crank it up and enjoy some Southern

Nostalgia
!!!!

Let it play through here and Green Grass and High Tides plays next. Ohhh, on my way to pull out some Outlaws CDs, Gotta go -----> yepyepyepyepyep

Edit: Here is Kenny Wayne Shepard Blue on Black. He was called the Stevie Ray Vaughan protege when he was like 18. Not sure what happened to him, but he had 2 real nice albums that I knew of. Give it a listen. Not necessarily Southern, but good none the less. yep

Edit 2: And, Nuff Saidd!!! yepyepyep
