Personally, I prefer buying it on Steam instead of Uplay directly for one reason--I can change what drive it installs to with Steam, Uplay forces it to C:
As someone with multiple HDs, I like that flexibility and my C: drive is a bit short on space right now. Oh, and Steam has my CC info already, I've never used it on Uplay and if I can limit the exposure I'd prefer it.
That said, Green Man Gaming is offering a good discount ($10 on the two low versions, almost $20 on gold) on the PC version right now. I believe they are Uplay codes, not Steam, however.

I had it preordered on amazon for a nice discount on a disc version, but apparently they dumped the disc version making it download only. I guess I'll get it direct on steam or uplay full price. It's worth it, but I'm cheap. I think GMG is good here, might try it.

I've bought many titles on GMG when they're just codes for Steam.
I wouldn't necessarily risk a disc transaction, but I recall in Ye Olden Days of Yore when Jason was working at that online game sales place (I can't recall the name at all) in the pre-ROF days that I got a couple of UK CD/DVD games for my PC from there. They worked just fine.

Jedi, Uplay definitely does not force installation on C:, thank goodness, as my C: drive is an SSD boot drive and quite small. Steam and Uplay allow for installation of games on E: (which is my big HDD). In some cases games' output data still gets stored on C: in the default /Documents location but I don't mind that as long as the games themselves are not clogging up my boot drive. At the moment I have three Uplay games installed, all on E: The Division, R6 Siege and the now-cancelled Wildlands Beta. In each case, Uplay gave me the choice of drive/folder destination.

Oh it did? OK then, I'll have to look and see next time I install something then.
I'm running into trouble with r6 Siege...I can't believe that game is taking up 77GB now! I hate to uninstall and reinstall it to my non-SSD drives (C: is a 500GB SSD, the others are standard) but it really doesn't need that speed like some other games do.

Open world games can be different. Games like Arma, Skyrim, etc can stream the data from the drive while you play en lieu of a big "loading" screen as you change from one map to the next like Doom or Wolfenstein do.
In R6 Siege, for example, it just improves loading times. In the Far Cry games, you can get a stutter when the HD spins up to stream the terrain ahead of you.
I don't know about Wildlands, but I would gather it streams.

On installs, I've got steam and uplay games over a couple of drives too. You can choose with each game. I've got them all on WD Black drives with no issues on open world games. Drive speed made a huge difference for capturing video, with slower drives resulting in choppy video.

I found the issue with spinning drives wasn't continuous usage, it was stop/start.
For example, if you're traveling across the map, the drive keeps going and streaming happens with little impact.
However, if you spend 20 minutes in one area, then suddenly get involved in a pursuit or escape or something, causing you to start moving at speed across the map, the drive has gone to sleep. It has to "wake up" to start streaming the data. That instant of waking up causes a hitch, stutter, whatever you want to call it.
Now in some cases you can change settings in your PC to make that delay (how long after going idle it goes to sleep) take as long as possible, but usually you're limited by the drive firmware.
