It doesn't help when companies have illogical pricing strategies.
Case in point: this weekend we needed to buy a new water filter for our pitcher in the fridge. Went to Target and they were $31...but online the price was $24! Choose "pick up at store" and pay for it via the mobile app, then go over to customer service in about 30 mins and pick it up. But why? Why make people go through dumb steps like that?
In addition to making us wait over half an hour, it also made an employee have to go get the item and return it to the front then assist us to pick it up, when they could have been doing something else.
I understand why the shelf price was higher than the online price (because maybe people won't check and they can make that extra $7), but we should've been allowed to just pick it up off the shelf ourselves and get the discount at the register. Or they could've just unified the pricing and saved everyone the trouble even if it meant potentially losing $7 to other customers who didn't check online first...which I believe is increasingly rare. I checked on my phone, not from my home PC. So can anyone else.

I buy many things online due to better prices but there are other advantages. Amazon has my dog food for about the same price as the local pet store, however, when I buy it from Amazon, I don't have to lug it (40# bag) from the store, deal with parking and checkout lines, and it gets delivered within two hours (Prime Now is awesome) of my ordering it. In the case of Amazon, I don't even have to sit down at the computer or take out my phone, I just tell the house (Alexa) to order dog food.
About the only time I visit a physical store, anymore, is for groceries and small hardware items, or if it is something that I need right now.

Shoes. People will always prefer shoe shops at the very least I reckon.

However, I have been buying the exact same style and size New Balance tennis shoes for many years and I can find them online more easily than I can in a store. Zappos, which is owned buy Amazon, has a free return policy which makes shoe sales do quite well online, I would imagine.

Is Schwans even still around? It's been years since I've seen one of their trucks driving around. Yep, I picked up a brochure from a driver down the street last week

Schwans is great for rural areas. Access to to the bigger stores are often long drives. Like the one I just made for the wife. She needed new socks and locally they do not carry the specific type she likes. Had to drive over to Mankato Kohl`s. 35 miles one way. And then hit Shopko for her soap. Stuff like this could been ordered online far easier and cheaper then driving. But she says navigating Khol`s website tells her to buy them in store. LOL, told her the website is designed for using your computer and not android friendly.
Sad thing about JC Penny and Sears, the 2 main anchor stores for Riverhills Mall in Mankato. All that will be left is Target and Scheels. The mall will die off fast now. Old Country Buffet was across the street and they closed to. So many bigger name stores are closing across rural America, making it difficult for the older folks who don`t use the internet for ordering.
We have Schwans trucks up here every day. Sometimes a couple times a day. Everyone has different schedule for delivery.

The biggest mall in Fort Wayne IN has anchor stores being Sears, JC Penny, and Macys. I haven't been to that mall in probably 10 years now...lol. No idea of how these stores that will most likely close in the next few years will affect the mall, but it doesn't really matter to me since I never go anyway. We had another large mall close about 20 years ago after Service Merchandise pulled the plug. Tore it down and put in a Super Walmart and Menards store that are always busy.
I also buy a lot of stuff online now. Shoes don't really matter to me. I buy my mil work boots and Asic running shoes online from AAFES and Amazon.
About the only thing I need to see to buy in person are groceries because I don't trust anyone but myself in picking fresh produce, and hardware/tools that I usually need in the moment.

I saw in Houston what I'm seeing in Baton Rouge, the older traditional indoor malls seem kinda empty but the newer more trendy outdoor malls are usually packed. Home Depot and Costco are always packed. This trend is happening nationwide. In order to compete with the online retailers the malls had to reinvent themselves.

The indoor mall here is actually picking up again. It was really dead 10 years ago but is doing better now. Meanwhile, the outdoor mall here just keeps getting bigger. A bit ridiculous now, actually.

Newer ones here are outdoor. We have 4 within 30 minutes of here. I don't think the desire some have to go shopping is going to die completely, but I do think the number of stores will get boiled down to a smaller number. I dread the eyesore empty buildings that will get left behind. It's time for this though, there are too many stores for their markets, ruining things for all of them. Tons of barely alive businesses overly dependent on Black Friday and not profitable enough to offer competitive pay for the times, no help for retirement for their employees that used to be part of their compensation and no decent insurance doesn't really do your home area much good.

Shoes. People will always prefer shoe shops at the very least I reckon. It's very hard for me to find hiking boots that fit me right, even among boots from the same manufacturer I can vary 1/2 size and a full width. So I always look for a new pair in person, and when I do the salesman earns his pay fetching & putting away pair after pair LOL. Once I have a pair that fits I buy online until I decide I want a new pair.

Been buying Keen Detroits for years, but finding the right width is tough in store. Once I find the right ones I order online and get them far cheaper then in store and most times free shipping and no tax. Huge price difference.
