Clapton's version is great; in fact the entire 451 album was really good. Other than his work with Duane, my favorites were the music he did with Delaney and Bonnie.

Likewise his good friend George Harrison's final #1 was I Got My Mind Set on You, which he also did not write. For someone who was well known for writing some very deep and meaningful songs both with and after The Beatles, like All Things Must Pass, a strange turn indeed. It may have been his only hit that he didn't write IIRC.

I thought "Tears In Heaven" went number 1?

According to the most recent edition of Joel Whitburn’s “Top Pop Singles” published by Billboard Magazine - the “industry bible” of U.S. Radio - Eric Clapton has had 17 Top 40 hits during his solo career.

So it made #2 and was unable to crack the top spot. I wonder what held it off?
Ok..it looks like George Michael's cover/duet of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" was #1 the previous week, and then from Feb 8-22 it was...
Sorry, Eric.

LOL It had a catchy beat at least.

Legacy Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time.[1][110][111][112] Clapton is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist, and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream.[5] He ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"[2] and fourth in Gibson's Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.[3]
Guitarists influenced by Clapton include Slash, Allen Collins, Richie Sambora, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore, Duane Allman, Derek Trucks,[113] Eddie Van Halen, Terry Kath,[114] Brian May, Tony Iommi, Lenny Kravitz, Ted Nugent, Orianthi, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Jonny Buckland, Joe Don Rooney, Alex Lifeson, Jonny Lang, John Mayer, Joe Satriani, Joe Bonamassa, Davy Knowles, Lindsay Ell,[115] Neal Schon, and Mark Knopfler.
In 2012, Clapton was among the British cultural icons selected by artist Sir Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork – the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover – to celebrate the British cultural figures of his life that he most admires to mark his 80th birthday.[116]
Speaking of respect for Bob Marley... (extract)
Quote
With this band Clapton recorded 461 Ocean Boulevard (1974), an album with an emphasis on more compact songs and fewer guitar solos; the cover version of "I Shot the Sheriff" was Clapton's first number one hit and was important in bringing reggae and the music of Bob Marley to a wider audience.
As has often been said, music is the soundtrack of our lives. While these days I listen to more of Joe Bonamassa than anybody else, Clapton's music has garnered a large share of my listening time over the years. There aren't that many artists that I care about, but if Clapton passes before I do, I shall miss him.
Some good songs in Falstar's listing, some of my favorites are missing...
"Let It Grow" "Blues Power" "Bell Bottom Blues" "Little Wing" (also like Sting's and SRV's cover).

I knew it was Bob's song, I'm amazed Clapton hasn't had a dozen #1 hits though.
That's just it. While having a large number of #1 hits sounds nice and makes for great blurbs, it's really irrelevant when it comes to a career's longevity or impact on the culture.
IIRC, the Grateful Dead had NO #1s of any kind. Yet everyone know who they were and what they did and they had an avid following. They had an awesome career.
Meanwhile, Right Said Fred was #1 for 3 weeks and then vanished into the aether. Does anyone think they were bigger than the Dead?
Even in the entertainment world, the tortoise and the hare applies--slow and steady won the race.
