Sounds like a mishmash of other movies.

Quote
Six astronauts aboard the space station study a sample collected from Mars that could provide evidence for extraterrestrial life on the Red Planet. The crew determines that the sample contains a large, single-celled organism - the first example of life beyond Earth. But..things aren't always what they seem. As the crew begins to conduct research, and their methods end up having unintended consequences, the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.

Which is not surprising, since Sony lost a lot of money last year, so they will be playing the true and tried plots for a while.

Yeah the basic premise is derivative but a lot what can make or break a movie is in the execution and style. The original Alien had a derivative premise as well after all.

That link was a good read. 2016 was a very mixed year for Sony pictures,

Ghostbusters - Lost money

Angry Birds Movie - Made money (surprise hit that exceeded studio expectations)

Passengers - Lost money (proved that Lawrence and Pratt are not infallible)

Sausage Party - Made money

The Magnificent Seven - Lost money (completely unsolicited remake)

The Shallows - Made money (surprise hit)

Risen - Lost money (failed money grab for the religious crowd)

The 5th Wave - Lost money

Inferno - Lost money (even Hanks couldn't save this one)

You are implying a causality that cannot exist.

Life was not written, greenlit, cast, produced, and released in under a year. It was started long before last year's poor performance was known. The editing may have been affected if the producers got studio pressure to make sure this was a more likely hit, yes, but the basic script was set long before.

That said, what is "Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk"??? I never heard of this film. No wonder it was a flop.

Well I've found that if a "same old plot/premise" still has creative script, effects and acting it will get my money.

It currently has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I'll be seeing it this weekend.

I can guarantee Chips will be funnier than Life.

If not, something is seriously wrong with both films.

Michael Pena is like the current "go to" guy whenever Hollywood needs a really funny Mexican dude. biggrin

Luis Guzman has done quite a bit as well. I think he's usually funnier than Pena.

I wonder how this is going to differ from the other fairly recent "we found life and it hates us"/"we can't let this get back to Earth" movies?
Not long ago we had...

I hope the movie is OK, but the tagline should be - "We never said it was going to be original..."

No one went to see Avatar for the story though.

We did, it was just dull. LOL
I guess original isn't always required but you better do it well and bring something to the table besides effects.
Princess Bride wasn't an original type of story, but the presentation, action and memorable script were worth it being quotable 25 or more years later.

The premise is only part of what makes a film work or not work. Ridley Scott mentions a few times during his commentary for "Alien" that the premise for Alien was very simple and in fact had been done before but what made it unique was in HOW that premise was presented along with of course HR Giger's genius behind the xenomorph and the derelict ship design. Naturally, film is a visual medium and "Alien" had a very unique and striking visual style for the time.

How soon we forget how novel 3D was at Avatar's release.

In any case, I will be happy if whatever creature is in this turns out to be memorable. I hope they are not trying too hard to make a space monster B movie look too smart.
