Hey gang,

I'm curious if anyone here is using an Oculus Rift with E:D on a GTX 970 and if they could comment on performance.

My system is possibly borderline for VR, though it can do E:D fully cranked at 1080p.

Core i5-2500k @ 4.0 GHz
8GB of 1833 mhz RAM
Samsung 850 SSD's
GTX970 w 4GB

Having asked that, I'm also curious if VR makes this game more "fun". If there are other VR titles worth mentioning, or a thread where this has been previously discussed, color me interested.

Cheers,

S6

Hi S6,
I have a GTX970 and Oculus Rift CV1. Gets the job done pretty well, GTX1080 would obviously be better but I'm happy to keep $$ in the bank for now.

VR makes E:D awesome, you truly are present in the game.

Kind regards, Zip

980Ti and Vive for me. ED is more fun when flying around, doing combat, mining, exploring, and the like. For stuff like trading where you're referencing external sites like INARA or other programs like EDDI or CMDR's Log, it's obviously awful. It's also more difficult when planning out long routes or looking at the system map in VR compared to on a screen. I've also had issues with trying to read the comms screen as my ship was being docked/undocked... I don't have this issue when playing on a monitor so I guess it's the combination of "being there" and the lower res of VR.

Fun? Yes. But it's not the be-all and end-all. Not yet anyway.

My best experience was sitting inside the various ships. I never got a feel of the size of the ships... a Sidey looked small but didn't really "feel" small. A Type-9 or an Imperial Cutter looked big, but didn't really "feel" big. In VR, you get that "feel" very well. It was roomy in the Cutter, but the Courier and Eagle felt like fighter cockpits.

Using an FX8350 with a 390x on a DK2 and it's pretty smooth, with the random hiccup.
As Ice stated, there are some drawbacks (resolution and system map), but I wouldn't play the game outside of VR since I've played it in VR. The resolution isn't that big of a deal for me, I've gotten use to it and I can always lean in and see the text clearly... you can change the coloring on the text also, which makes it a little more legible.

Dogfighting, flying through the Res asteroids, landing, strafing around ports... you're in the ship looking through the glass overhead and on the sides to keep tracking your target. I had the cockpit glass break on my sidewinder once and I was able to stick my head out of the window and see some of the outside of the ship... that was pretty cool! I really enjoy just driving around the surface too, I'll enter turret view and use my rudder pedals for steering and the wheel on my HOTAS for the throttle as I'm traversing the turret and looking around independently from it.

For me... oh yeah, it makes the game great! I'm trying to wait for the next version of the rift instead of buying a CV1, but if my DK2 went down, I'd buy a CV1 the next day.

Other stuff like DCS and Dirt Rally are incredible as well.

One thing I hate about the VR experience is the loss of the beautiful detail and glory of the space stations as you come in to dock.

Thanks for the input guys. I will give it a go, and upgrade if need be. Can you 970 guys run any super-sampling?
