From the latest Developer Diary 149:

VR support is coming in March. Being a fairly new Rift owner, this is great news for me. Now with the upcoming change to the SP system, and VR support, I am fully back on board with this sim. I recently added BOM Premium and have pre-ordered BOK.

I am really looking forward to flying it again (it has been quite a long time).
Sounds like some exciting times ahead!

Fantastic news. I have been so wrapped up in other VR flight sims that I have totally neglected BOS/BOM. I will order BOK the day VR is implemented.

Also Oculus just this week reduced the price of both the Rift and the Touch Controllers by 100.00 USD each, great time for anyone that was on the edge thinking about getting one.

Been waiting for this since my Oculus preorder lol! I purchased the thing for DCS and IL2.

I just purchased yesterday a 7700K + mobo/mems (after checking Ryzen reviews yesterday...) to replace my 3570K. I spent 4 years without checking CPU reviews in depth, as it looked like there was barely any improvement, but, after Ryzen was announced, I started to check benchmarks etc. and definitively there is a 30-50% increase in performance in CPU limited gaming scenarios (basically ARMA 3, Squad, WOFF, Kerbal Space Planet, DCS, P3D and XP11 - everything that I play). Can't wait to check it out!

Nice choice congrats!
I thought about replacing my 4820K X-79 system this year, however the thing is rock solid at 4.50 GHz all day every day, decided to hold off 1 more year.
You are going to be well set to run BOS in VR!

My 3570K would barely go over 4.1Ghz - even stock it demanded too much voltage, also my "2400mhz" memos aren't stable unless at 2000mhz, so - in my specific case - I'll have a nice bump of IPC summed to a nice increase in clock speeds (I'll leave the 7700K at 4.5ghz for now). I'm quite sure this will be great help for those moments the FPS dips below the 90's (or 45 for the more demanding games like P3D and XP11) and keep Oculus ASW running smooth.

Dude, now I hope they eventually release a WOFF VR edition... WWI air combat is perfect for the current gen of VR devices.

Developer Diary 150

Quote
Today is an important day for the project - we start VR alpha test. It will take 1-2 weeks, then we'll finalize the functionality, perform the beta testing run and then, hopefully, we will be able to release the update with Open VR support before the end of March.

VR support turns out to be tricky not because it is complex by itself, but because this technology and API are still relatively immature - there are no beaten paths and in some parts we were moving forward almost blindly. A large chunk of time was spent on finding new ways to optimize performance to make VR experience more fluid, many improvements were made in this field. Another big task we needed to complete was adapting the user interface for VR to make it usable. For a while, we were a bit puzzled how to make optical sights (like Pe-2 lower UBT MG gunsight or tank gunner sight) function in VR realistically, and we decided to show the gunsight only for one eye while another eye should be closed (like in real life). In our opinion, Oculus Rift cv1 has slightly better lenses and more effective usage of the display matrix (pixels in front of you are placed a bit tighter, but overall field of view is narrower). On the other hand, HTC Vive has more advanced tracking tech, slightly wider FOV which feels less like looking through binoculars, much larger possible play area (not like it is useful for a flight sim though) but its lenses have visible peripheral moire effect. In short, both devices have their pros and cons and if you plan to buy one, it would be ideal to demo them both to find out which one suits you better (but be mindful of a possibility of wearing a VR unit in a public place after someone else who may have had red-eye for instance). All in all, we like how VR works in our sim, it's on par or even better than in other sims.

Interesting choice on the gun-sight, not sure how I am going to like having to close one eye - will see how it is.
I am sure one will get used to it I guess.

Any recent news on when VR support is coming ? Last I heard was end of March . Is that still the plan ?
I've been using the Oculus with DCS for a few months now . Very immersive , really good fun , but the IL 2 series has always been my favorite hands down .

As per the last blog entries, they are "optimizing" their VR implementation. I would expect another month for this update, but maybe it gets released earlier.

It's out right now.

DCS Kickstarter
Wags July 2014 "In this July 2014 update, the primary news is in regards to the restructured backer rewards. After a careful review of the older system under RRG, we found it financially unattainable."
Wags October 2017 "the investment vs. generated revenue has been excellent for the World War II aircraft. In fact, the P-51D Mustang has twice the cost effectiveness of the A-10C Warthog."

Tried it out yesterday in my Rift after version 2.009 became available.

It is beautiful! And performance is very good, better than what I had anticipated.
1CGS did a great job with this implementation of VR support.
I plan to full ring it out today.

It delivers on the promise of good VR. If you are on the fence about getting into VR and are a combat flightsim fan, its time to get in now!! Prices have come down on the VR hardware and the game is on sale.

It's a blast and I don't get nauseated after a while like I do with DCS flying WWII fighters. This went from an ok sim to a must have if you're into doghfighting and have a VR setup.

Best VR experience for me, no doubt: the setting (close combat) is well suited to the low pixel density VR headsets of the current generation. Graphic-wise it's on par with DCS, but it seems somewhat sharper.

I have logged a few hours in it now since the initial release of VR support on Tuesday.

This sim is now truly breathtaking. I have had more fun in the last few days than I have had in quite some time in combat flight simming.
The graphics are very good and performance for me is excellent. Heck I am running on Ultra Preset with a Pixel Density of 1.5 and still get a very smooth experience.

If one is into VR and enjoys combat flight simming, this one has turned into a must have imho.

Understand I was a huge critic of this game back early on, with the changes they have made recently in direction and now this VR support, I am fully on board with them again.
I would highly recommend BoS now for any lover of WWII combat flight simming.

What a radical change for Il2 BOS. From a total disappointment that I shelved in its early days to playing a PWCG campaign in VR. Wow. How good VR is is not something I'll be able to convey by writing something here - you've just got to try it. I can still remember how as a kid I dreamed of a day when we would be able to play a flight simulator that would put us in the cockpit and the simulated world. Yep that's definitely a dream come true!

Sorry for the naive and uninformed quick question but: Rift or Vive, in a few words?

Airplanes are now built to carry a pilot and a dog in the cockpit: the pilot's job is
to feed the dog, and the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he touches anything...

Have a read here:
http://www.techradar.com/news/wearables/htc-vive-vs-oculus-rift-1301375

Personally after much deliberation I went with the Rift, and have been very happy with it. Not to say it is better as I have never tried a Vive, just that I am very pleased with it.

Oculus did have a significant price drop on the Rift here couple months ago, so it is little cheaper if that makes any difference. In any event I am sure you would be pleased with either.
I see plenty of happy both Rift and Vive users on different forums.

Thank you. I would like to ask the same question about DCS, that many of you certainly fly too: any preference there? Certainly the link you posted will shed much light.

Like many others I am thrilled with the quality of the VR implementation of 2.009. It has brought me back to the sim and for the past few days I have done nothing else other than slowly work my way through the different aircraft just doing test flights. I have enjoyed all that I have tried to date but none more so that the I-16 Type 24. It was a bit of surprise to me because it was not one of my favorites originally (in the flat world) but in VR, with the open (tight) cockpit, the view and the sound cranked up I just can't get enough of it.

Aeronautico... I use the Vive and the implementation of this sim (and DCS) are both great but as Don says above, it sounds like Rift and Vive users are both enjoying the quality implementation so you can't go too far wrong either way.

hey guys, game is running flawlessly on my Oculus CV1 + gtx 1080. Only issues I can notice is that sometimes gunsight gets flickering. its like mix of propeller and heat + flickering. sometimes is in a bigger area not just the gunsight. Anybody have similar issues?

Yes, that is ASW for the Rift kicking in when FPS drops much below 90.
https://developer.oculus.com/blog/asynchronous-spacewarp/

It works very well to provide smooth gameplay when it gets below the recommended fps range for the Rift, it drops fps down to 45 and interpolates the frames to give an end result of the required 90 fps for the Rift.
However it does cause some graphic anomalies like you described. Does the same in DCS as well.

You can disable ASW for the Rift, but may then get stuttering when fps drops.

Only modern DCS aircraft I fly is the A10. VR is well implented but I do better in 2d, game wise. It's fun flying around in VR but can't say I'm very competitive with it. Systems are harder to control for me in VR. More experienced players probably have less problems.

The WWII fighters are easier to control but full on dogfights wear me out. After 15 minutes I have to take the Rift off because I get motion sick.

With Il2 I don't get motionsick and can dogfight for hours on end. This weekend My two 1080ti's are going to be installed and I'll find out if it changes the motion sickness issues in DCS. So far Il2 BOS is sticking out head and shoulders above all the other VR flight sims I've tried out so far.

I made the same experience. I do get motion sickness with DCS. I restricted myself to 10 mins, as I did feel very bad the whole day after around 30 mins through Vegas with the 190. I really hope, they can do something about it. I love the helicopters.

Because of that finding, I didn't expect it to be different with BoS. But I did do aerobatics with the I16 for more than an hour. This was my best PC sim fun ever !
