I lost interest around the time they announced Warhammer.
I still have Napoleon, Shogun 2 and Attila installed but only Shogun/Fall of the Samurai gets any real play time. I don't think I'll ever tire of throwing samurai at Gatling guns.
Of course all three are modded almost beyond recognition, the default battle speed is far too fast in the newer games, Napoleon, Empire and Medieval 2 had a good balance. Also use mods to make the factions more interesting and get rid of those ugly colour schemes.
Best Total War games;
Overall winner - Shogun 2 + FOTS Best campaign - Empire Best battles - Napoleon Best mods - Rome/Medieval 2 Most disappointing - Rome 2

Napoleon is indeed great and for me the best campaign is playing the grand Europe campaign as the French. I like a good challenge. Yeah, I also liked the mini campaigns such as Italy and Egypt. It's be cool to have all of Europe on the same detailed scale, but then again I have enough trouble micro-managing a large empire as it is. And yes, you should definitely try some mods, most are pretty easy to install too.

I haven't played TW games in about a year. Big fan of the series however. I played a hell of a lot of M2 with Stainless Steel mod.
Shogun 2 I liked, but there was something about it that failed to pull me in entirely. Only put about 40 hours in to that one. I played Empire and Napoleon much more. I'd probably give the nod to Napoleon if forced to choose a favorite. I love the way supply works in that one and I would like to be able to port that feature to every TW game.
Rome was my first, but I'm not going to play that again. Rome 2 and Attila I skipped as frankly I'm not interested so much in the time period despite the fond memories of playing Rome.
I have Darthmod on both Empire and Nappy.

I play one or more of the Total war games a little bit almost every day. A few months ago after laying off for a while, I started with Empire and worked my way through all of the Steam based games up to Attila--including the various expansions and/or mini campaigns. After binge watching all the available episodes of the Vikings mini-series last week on Amazon Prime, I just started a Kingdom of the Danes campaign in Age of Charlemagne. It reminds me of the old "Age of Vikings" expansion for the first Medieval TW. I just added up my hours recorded on Steam for the TW games and I'm just 71 hours short of 10,000 hours. That's equal to working at a 40 hour a week job for 5 years. I'm hoping they announce the next historical title this year with a release of next year. The developers hinted on the official site that they were looking at another mini-campaign DLC for one of the current games since the next historical title is a ways off. It may have just been hype, but it would be nice if they did come up with something for Rome 2 or Attila. I can't see them going back any further than one of those games if the do come up with a new DLC Here's a link to the entire statement from mid December followed by a the actual quote about a new DLC, which is pretty vague at best https://forums.totalwar.com/discussion/1...ecember-2016/p1Historical Team Unannounced Total War Title With production getting fully underway in the new year, pre-production for our next historical major release continues. Also, we have now partnered with our first historical advisor, pre-eminent in his field and already bringing that world-leading expertise to bear on our designs and extensive research so far. Unfortunately theres nothing more to report this month that wouldnt give the game away before were ready
It will still be some time before we are able to share anything specific about our next big historical game. The official social media channels, and the worlds press will certainly tell you when theres more to reveal.
In related news, weve recently been looking at ways in which we might get back to historical content before we release the next major historical Total War, in particular thinking about additional content or standalones for some of our more recent historical titles. Nothing decided yet though. Cheers

Are you that sure about it? because you know, Steam hasn't had Total War games before Empire and that was in 2009. You mean that in 7 years, you spent 5 full time on Total War? You know, I must have around a thousand on Rome 2 but I have not played more than possibly 50 or 60 hours. The rest is either a glitch on Steam or maybe, I left the launcher open in the background and I know I did for long but certainly not for THAT long.

Wow, F/O, that's impressive. I have 2500+ in EU IV, and I hide that fact (well not now) because I am afraid someone will think I don't have a life lol. I can confidently claim even more hours in Falcon 4 and Grand Prix Legends, but no hours tracked for confirmation. Sheesh, I gotta get a life You guys have piqued my curiosity about Charlemagne. From what I've read it didn't seem all that promising, but you guys seem to like it. Is it really a worthy successor to M2?

I think it is even though I will disclose that the campaign map is more limited compared to M: 2. It's only Western Europe, Central Europe and the British Isles. I think there are about 8 playable factions. The Avars and the Emirate of Cordoba I found the most unique.

Thanks PM, those were two of the reasons I was down on it, too-small map and limited factions. In addition, from what I've read, I came away with the impression that most of the other stuff that could constitute the non-combat side of things -- diplomacy, espionage, civic affairs and so on -- were also poorly implemented. I would love a M2 era game. I want Stainless Steel updated, with no Pope

You know, I must have around a thousand on Rome 2 but I have not played more than possibly 50 or 60 hours. The rest is either a glitch on Steam or maybe, I left the launcher open in the background and I know I did for long but certainly not for THAT long. Well, I retired at the end of 2007 at the age of 62. I have no children and divorced my 2nd wife in 2005. Luckily, I got my 401k out of the market before the recession hit, so I am financially comfortable. I can play games all day long if I wish and sometimes do during the winter months when it's not fun to get out and ride my bike or other outdoor activities. There's no telling how many hours I put into Medieval 2 since it was pre-Steam, but I'm betting well over 2000. Here's my screen shot of just my hours in Shogun 2, which I've played more than any--more FOTS than the main game because I'm just love blowing up armies with the artillery. This of course doesn't count the hours I have played in off line mode, which would be substantial from a few years ago when I had internet issues from my old provider. Yet, I do have other interests and enough of a social life to tear me away from the PC quite often. @ Panzer You really should try some of the simple mods--even if you don't want to try a full overhaul mod. They are easy to implement with the Steam workshop system. I have multiple simple mods applied----mostly unit and UI graphic changes--no overhaul mods. The problem I have with overhaul mods is there tends to be just as many changes I don't care for as there are features I like. All one is doing is trading the developer's idea of how the game should be played to somebody else's idea of how the game should be played. However, there are enough small mods, that one can almost create their own overhaul to their liking. Here's a couple of shots of the unit and graphic changes I use for Rome 2, which simply make the game more enjoyable to me. One is to replace the ill chosen and confusing Greek pottery line drawings that CA used for the unit cards with some that are similar to other TW games. Another is to make the Roman units more historically correct after the Marion reforms. See the before and after of these simple mods. Vanilla Mods with the traditional style unit cards and uniform upgrades including revised shields A melee unit with revised shields, more correct centurion armor including chest decorations and greaves plus braccae (common trousers) for all the troops. Also they are wearing the focale--a neck scarf to protect against chaffing from the armor. I also use the "no weather" mod in every total war game where somebody has created one. This is very important for those games where CA removed the ability to get 3 delays to start a battle like Empire or Napoleon, While the developers want to show off their weather effects, it's simply historically inaccurate for armies to fight a battle during a raging rain storm--especially for those games set during a period when armies were mainly equipped with black powder weapons. Simply put, a flintlock rifle or just about any muzzle loading rifle or cannon becomes useless in the rain in pretty short order. An army of black powder equipped infantry becomes an army of melee fighters with poorly designed spears or clubs--if no bayonets are available. Black powder was a precious commodity and supplies had to be conserved for battle. Committing to a battle in the rain was tantamount to total disaster for any army or navy during this period. Cheers

Well, I retired at the end of 2007 at the age of 62.
Sorry F/O, I might have come across as judgmental which was not my intention, only stupor. To be fair I later thought again about it and figured you could be retired or not working indeed, and I know how easily one can be sucked into playing a Total War title, no end. I myself must have played a thousand hours combined in the original Rome and M2. The bigger limitation being other games one plays, more than "real life".

No problem. I took no offense and it was a legitimate question. I just hope I can keep it up for a few more years. At least it's better than getting married again. Besides, I can get all the free porn I want on the net Cheers

As already posted by SDE, I lost interest when they went for Warhammer and haven't played for a good while anyway... My favourites in the series are Rome 2 and Napoleon The last time I played Napoleon was after watching some of the 'Sharpe' series and it got my juices flowing again, lol!
