Just wondering if people are using the TAC display when they fly? I read some older threads where some say yes and some say no, but for the new UE version, are people using the TAC?

Being still a novice, I still use the TAC for flying to way points and reaching the right altitude, but I've lowered the TAC range down to 0.3 miles and have it set to show everything. This way I can target certain items for my AI wing mates while still having to scan the skies manually using TrackIR so that no enemy aircraft can sneak up close to me. I think you need the TAC on to assign targets for the AI, correct?

I would like to hear other people's opinions, please?

Thanks.

put it this way....

If your pushed for time then use tac at 4km

If you have 2hrs for 1 and only one full real flight then turn it off.

make mistakes and learn from them

If you have an interest is recreating a semi-historical experience then you will obviously have no "magic crap" on your screen. (And nope, you do not need the TAC to assign targets for the AI; they will attack on their own.) It is fun to try no TAC ... the challenge of navigation and the fear of being ambushed are pretty cool.

Nevertheless there are many reasons people will use the TAC; useful for rookies to learn the game, some folks are more video game oriented than simulation oriented, poor eyesight, or as lederhosen mentioned above many people do not have time for full-real flying so need to do what works.

As always, try both ways and do whatever is fun for you.

Unfortunately, the video screen doesn't allow resolution as visual experience in reality. I'd like to have a screen where I'd see more 'realistically' for whatever that means. Looking at video screens is like looking at scenery through a square tunnel. Peripheral cues are absent. My central visual acuity is 20/08 ('normal' or average is 20/20) and I have a 'knack' for seeing things that others can't like, for example, deer in the woods, vultures and hawks flying at extreme altitudes or the slightest movement that gives away a critter's location. Guess it's my 'country boy' upbringing! So, that being said, TAC is handy but doesn't replicate the true experience of pilotage. I ain't complainin'... just sayin'!

I love this sim! clapping

I never use the TAC because I just turn on the Labels and Map every once in a while to see what is around me without ever using the TAC.

Rookie/Veteran, good/bad, alive/dead......the odds are so thin even w/ TAC on I find I never last very long at all flying w/ it off.....probably about as long as the real deal guys did....IF I'M LUCKY! It doesn't tell you altitude, just makes you situationaly aware there are other aircraft around....as if you had other eyes (the rest of your squad) looking around too. Set the distance at 1.1 and you'll find it's still plenty confusing figuring out if they're friendly or not or even where the hell they are. Disable things like padlock function. select next target, next friendly, etc. and you'll have all you can handle. The AI's got their "tac" on....i figure I can use mine w/out feeling like a dunce. Don't know how these guys that fly full on do it....but they do. Matter of taste, fun, survivability, and time......suit yourself....I do.

As it is when looking through goggles thumbsup

Also there is the dot function, which simulates and enhances distant specks. You can set in WS how far this dots should be visible. For me 6000 meters is the best setting.

Wearing flight goggles limit your peripheral vision like PC monitor.. confused

Everything off for my "real" guy. I use TAC for my secondary pilots (have three that I fly in different squads, different planes that I'm competing against each other).

I also have exceptional vision, but it's different with a monitor. Pixels don't scale the same way. To make up for the depth perception and poor visuals (video game as opposed to real life vision), I'll pause and half zoom when scanning the skies.

For me there are things we remove to create realism, but there are also compensations we can make in the other direction so as to create realism.

Just my method. Your mileage may vary.

Thank you! I thought I read that you needed the TAC to get your AI mates to drop bombs and so on.
