Whats even funnier is that the ED minion was spouting off about Spitfire and Viggen integration into 2.0 this week:

Pfft, maybe next time...

I still don't get why ED does have to provide updates to the core game just to implement updates to 3. party airplanes. It should be the other way round just like in P3D for example.
I would like to see 3. party developer being more independent regarding to release aircrafts and patches.

That's because contrary to that ED (and it's fans) say, DCS is NOT a MODULAR simulation (like FSX/P3D/SF2/etc...).

Exactly this, proven time and time again.

ED will be furiously working on more updates to the core game before that can happen.....at the detriment of the Normandy map and the 2.5 merger (their highest priorities allegedly)

What's strange is from day 1 Black Shark had the obvious modular hooks in there. Control assignments had the drop down that listed the Ka-50 Game and Sim but it was apparent you could put other planes in there. The separate front-end for SP menus...

I guess the issue is at the core too much of LOMAC's code was reused. They needed to rewrite more up front, and not slowly over a decade (yes, we're on the near side of a decade since BS 1.0). Their attempt to save money by reusing legacy code I think has cost them more.

The funny part is BS is now 2x older than LOMAC was when BS came out. smile

Well if what you say proves anything, it proves exactly the opposite (that DCS is not modular).

For example if this sim was modular than you would have the same list or menu of controls for ALL aircraft with perhaps a few custom controls (within the same menu/list) for special commands/controls which could be used for each different aircraft, you know, like for example happens with all TRUE modular sims (again like FSX/P3D/SF2 and others).

Also and speaking of Black Shark (BS), I remember that when BS1 first came out ED claimed that this would a new modular sim in the lines of other modular sims like FSX where the BS would be the first aircraft followed by others. But when the next aircraft came out (A-10C) ED had the need to release what was basically a new sim (DCS World) so that this new aircraft (A-10C) could be integrated.
And if there's a need for any further evidence that DCS World is NOT modular you just have to remember that BS1 (Black Shark 1) couldn't be directly integrated into DCS World (which wouldn't be a problem if DCS World was truly modular) and thus ED had to develop a modification of Black Shark, the BS2 (Black Shark 2).

This not to mention that core changes must be made to the sim (DCS World) in order to incorporate ANY new aircraft.

I think the intent was always to allow the customer to choose what modules they want to use inside a Core product, rather than implement a system you describe.

I disagree and if my memory doesn't fail me there were references from ED to DCS becoming a system/sim similar to FSX. But even if I'm mistaken, there are plenty of references from ED towards DCS being a "Modular" sim which is not.

Also regarding your comment, I must admit that I'm falling to understand the logic it.
As far as I know FSX, P3D, Strike Fighters Series, etc... also allows the customer to choose what modules/addons they want to use inside a Core product.
Heck those sims even allow the customer a much better "choose whatever they want into the core product" since there's no frigging mess like the 1.5, 2.0 or 2.5 of DCS where some modules work only in one of those "versions" and so on...
Or resuming it's like DCS is composed by a few, quite different "cores" instead of a single one as it should be - Well typical ED mess up!

In the time they've spent working on the AA missile FM I literally went from being childless to having a daughter in 2nd grade...and they're still not done.

They have never prioritized that work. It has been an open issue since LOMAC and there is no reason existing that they couldn't have finished it long ago had they tried.

Cliffs of Dover began production, screwed it up, finally came out, was worked on, died, the team was dissolved and moved on, modders took over, great strides were made, and now they have access to the source code and will be releasing greater changes to it...and still DCS AAMs are not done.

There is no universe where this delay is reasonable.

Aw, c'mon Jedi... surely you jest. If someone can show them the classified information that will substantiate these "A-A missiles are not right" claim, I'm sure they'll fix it. And remember to present the info in a pleasant, grovelling manner otherwise, well, we all know how they prioritize "delivery" rather than "content" of critcisms, no matter how valid the content.

You cannot have people with thin skins involved in customer relations. It is a basic fact of business.

Might as well hire a 6 yr old girl who can just burst into tears anytime someone asks a question that isn't some variation of "could you tell us how great you are?" At least we'd feel bad about her crying, no one feels bad about a mod getting upset.

Because people would not be able to play online together with different versions. And not everyone is going to keep track manually updating a module they have not bought, so every module will need to set up an auto updater which all launch with the base DCS updater for everyone to run the same version.

That's not the point Flogger......the game shouldn't need an update just to add a new aircraft. If the game was fully integrated we could all have the same DCS version but different aircraft even on a new release.

As others have mentioned on a new airframe alpha/beta/release ED have to change or update the core game just to support it.....the same happens with a lot of campaigns. It just goes to show that the game isn't modular at all.

well I guess the good side of this is that ED have to release a patch for the whole sim.

Because otherwise they might wait X years before releasing a patch... who knows...

Exactly.

One large update a year, with the rest of the time fixing bugs would be a way more efficient route to follow. It would also tremendously help Third Party devs.

But hey, why look at the rest of the software/game industry right?

oh I hope they have sorted the download issue when Normandy is released......not rely on joe public to come up with the solution of downloading the map, creating a torrent and seeding it through Utorrent like we all remember when Nevada was released......must suck when the on the books testers who have the title of "ED TESTER" under their name can't work out a solution and joe public comes up with the fix, has it endorsed by the producer himself and writes up a statement when ED had nothing to do with the fix......Oh I can't wait to see their servers fail when Normandy is released.....

WOW. what a #%&*$# patch.
So this list is a list of all the important fixes/errors on DCS' s todo list.
Yet even though we still have bad lods, bad terrain textures, and bad performance in the NTTR map the best fix they could come up with is converting the Spifire altimeter scale from ATA to Milibars!!!!
No mention of any fixes in the pipeline or the fact that they know the Terran texures are FUBAR and will be fixing it in the next patch, nada.

Wow.
talk about getting your priorities right LOL.

what next - We have changed the size of the soldiers boots from a size 9 to a size 10.

Am I the only one who looks at the NTTR map and thinks Fallout: New Vegas? Need to put a missile in the Lucky 38.

Anyone else experiencing this glitch in the f-5 cockpit since last update??:

also all in the cockpit seems to have a "wet" aspect, like reflections gone crazy...just to know if its just me though I made a repair with no success...

I think something went wrong with the new? shaders/reflections in the cockpit and there is a side effect with the edges of the canopy glass dds file...I guess...anyway its a pain flying in NTTR since a LONG time and even more now with this...

Yes. All the way down the patch notes they state that you have to install the MS VC14 Runtime for DCS to work now.

But I'm holding off for now. The new 2.0.5 patch broke so many things in DCS, it's mind-boggling how this mess could pass the quality control.

I hadnt to update anything as I already had the VC updated but I just got banned with 40% warning level for saying that the NTTR was "forgotten" after MONTHS of nothing but bad patches and more that a whole YEAR in beta biggrin duck ...and for not "behaving as they want me to behave" I guess.

Yes "praise us or STFU" is how one is to behave otherwise one gets ones "posting rights revoked"

DCS Kickstarter
Wags July 2014 "In this July 2014 update, the primary news is in regards to the restructured backer rewards. After a careful review of the older system under RRG, we found it financially unattainable."
Wags October 2017 "the investment vs. generated revenue has been excellent for the World War II aircraft. In fact, the P-51D Mustang has twice the cost effectiveness of the A-10C Warthog."

Yeah, very true...and just to clarify, I just said it was "forgotten", just that word, nothing about the year in beta/alpha or whatever the map is, nor the months of bad updates and..."posting rights revoked". Sorry for the off topic Silver!

I hate to say it, but NTTR comes off as really being expensive eye candy at this point. Especially for me as it bogs down on my ancient machine. And that is with an Nvidia 660 that has no problems running other graphics intensive games.

No offense, but it tells you the requirements beforehand. Not saying that 2.0.5 isn't broken in some ways though.

Sorry, but a 660 is an old card, almost 5 years old. On top of that, it was only an adequate performer on release, being in the low $200s. It was no 680 or 690. It's a good card for DX9 games, but not DX10+.
I don't know what you refer to as "graphics intensive games", but there are many newer games now that refer to GTX 960s as the required card, with recommended being even higher.

That said, DCS has always been more about the CPU, which you didn't mention, but if it's the same vintage as your 660 it's likely also dated.

Stop poking holes in my dreams, m'kay? A poor guy has to go with what he's got and my CPU runs 1.5 just fine and probably 2.0 if I could just swallow my pride and turn down the graphics. By graphics intensive I mean War Thunder (max settings), ArmA III, and Elite Dangerous. I'd love a new computer, but I need money and there has to be more justification for it than to run one game. This is probably one reason why EECH and Falcon are still around though.

Also my CPU is an AMD A6-3650 2.6GHz quad core which would be adequate if DCS World would use all four cores. From what I have read, not many people play DCS World 2.0 anyway.

I wouldn't upgrade for 2.0, no. Not when everything is going to change (supposedly) with 2.5.

However, I have NEVER upgraded for just one game. I upgrade for ALL my games and all the games to come. smile Unless you plan on never getting any games newer than the ones you have now, that is.

Arma 3 needs a lot, though, I'm surprised you're satisfied with its performance with that setup unless you have it turned down quite a bit. Never played WT or ED so I can't comment on what they want from a system to look nice.

An A6 4C/4T (Regardless of PileDriver, Steam Roller or Excavator Architecture) at 2.6Ghz is not enough, I have a FX8350 at 5.3x GHz and it bottlenecks DirectX 9,10, and 11 Games easily,

Entry Level Machine will get you entry Level Performance.

None of the Games listed above come remotely close to battlefield size, rendered visible distance, objects/physics/ai scripts of DCS.

Elite Dangerous is very well optimized, being a space sim, I get super FPS in E:D, in Single GPU, and In VR, it's one of few games I can Run Max Details in VR and maintain 90FPS.

Then somebody better tell ED because DCS runs fine for me. BTW, I wasn't aware DCS was only for the PC elite. I'll keep that in mind next time I am looking for a game for my off-the-shell poor man's PC. Or maybe you'd like to donate some money toward upgrading my machine with me being unemployed and all.

It's not only for "PC Elite", I'm just saying, you cannot expect to launch DCS and Pump all the graphics to max on the Hardware you have. just because the MMO and Console Ports You have can do it.
I can Run War Thunder on Max while keeping my GPU at 2D Idle Clocks (500Mhz)

This isnt a Console Port, This isnt a Arcade Space Shooter, this isnt a Land Based Tactical Sim w/ Limited View Distance.

This is an entire Battlefield Simulator, from Aircraft, To Vehicles, to Physics, to Radars, To Wind, to Weapons.
The World and Events going on in the wold are Vast, enough to bring even the beefiest machines to it's knees.

I just tried to get everything going for the first time in a year. I - probably unwisely - bought Nevada and F-5, but after downloading 2.005 and all NOTHING works:

- Endless request for key, 90% of which fail
- No missions appear
- Any attempt to load anyting results in my being asked for access key, (return to first problem)

WTF DCS? Can I get a refund on this piece of crap becasue I have been through early verison pains with ED, RoF and BoS but being totally unable to run anything really takes the biscuit. Does this company have QA at all?

Also make sure you have the VC14 Runtimes installed.

That's debatable Skate!

I'd wager it's not so much what's going on in the world but more to do with an archaic engine that isn't efficiently using modern CPUs containing multiple cores.

Yep I'd agree, the trick of using a server to host AI, bumping up player FPS illustrates just this - not sure how feasible it'd be to re-work this though.

Since ED has already stated that multi-threading will not be pursued because it offer no significant gain, it doesn't matter if it is feasible or not.

Doesn't it take much more work to split the cores up, when everything works together so closely every cycle? This can slow things down I believe in some cases? I did see a post about using a server on ED's forum and how it can help. Be nice if the AI at least could be offloaded to a different core like it sort of is, I guess for multiplayer.

Sounds like it would double the workload for little benefit and we don't need ED changing direction now do we, not until after all the other many high priorities, well the stuff on the consumer side that should be the highest priority. F18, Strait of Hormuz, weapon guidance AI and ATC, Sort of a good Stable 2.5 Alpha/Beta/Omega would be nice too? All that in two weeks right! This year?

That statement makes me laugh so hard! People who are not a programmer or, in case they are, have never had even a slight experience in multithread in games will fall into that extremely lame and lazy excuse.

To make a game fully multithreading it requires developers to completely change the pattern/paradigm of what has been done for years (eg. many still develop games following a deep OOP pattern which is basically not compatible with multithreading). So since some just try to fit the old way into a multithreading scenario (eg. by just assigning a given system to a given threat which is a naive and very bad multithread implementation), they get to the conclusion that the gain is not enough for the amount of overhead and prematurely drop multithreading.
Modern games will benefit from multithread because the dev community has begun to address the problem by applying others patten/paradigm (eg. break data into task and threat them as such and regulate them with a task manager similar to what an OS would). I believe that once there will be 2-3 AAA games that make TRULY FULLY use of multicore engine, the performance gap might be so big that old devs would not be in the condition to hide behind the "too little gain for the overhead" and devs will be forced to start new projects by using a modernized engine instead of trying to adapt old one with obvious poor results.

Now speaking of ED, i just say that they have no excuse to hide behind because not only they have just made a new engine, although only the render layer, but also they wasted resource to work on 3 different version at the same time. They had the chance to do things right and compatible with the inevitable future but no no ... let's just waste resource and not only do things that will be already old when released but also let's work on 3 version separately just to do a bad use of resources .... you know...just for fun XD

To be fair, the excuse is used by many other devs because they fear the idea of having to create a completely different engine from scratch, that they have no experience with, but they are just postponing the inevitable. So it's nothing personal against ED, it becomes personal when you realize that they already wasted resource for 3 different version when every thing could have been canalized to only one version!!! for the mother of the bad use/optimization of resources.

Howdy
New to forum noticed this thread regarding DCS 2.0.5, and the comments regarding updates, hows this for frustration regarding the sim been waiting for 3 weeks for an update to 1.5.6 to fix the bugs in modules then along comes one for v2.0 yippee the Viggen for the NTTR map, only to find v2.0 now broken by the latest update and still nothing for 1.5.6, numerous modules seem to be affected in v2.0. It got that bad and frustrating I've had to revert back to a previous version so can continue using the modules I have, nothing much from ED on the matter of the update problems apart from some of the devs reporting unable to reproduce fault. There seems to be a lot of people that are a bit miffed at this update! Now we come to today Friday which is usually update day still nothing on 1.5.6, no news on 2.0 problems, and lo and behold a new map announced for pre-purchase, which needs v2.0 by the way the same one thats having problems, mmm shall I pre purchase it think not!!!! Come on ED and Devs keep us the people who are buying your product informed, we know they are in early stage but some news would be helpful and comforting.

Hi Sittingduck123,

Welcome

Totally agree Sittingduck123, pretty annoying at the moment, ED is definitely juggling too much. I hope once they get rid of Normandy they can really focus on the 2.5 and merge all this mess together and focus on the one main install and one beta for testing perhaps.

Hello Sittingduck123... appropriate name for the situation you're in, I guess? Welcome to SimHQ and if this is your first experience with such issues in regard to ED/DCS, prepare yourself for this to be the "norm." Two steps forward, three steps back.

Also curious, where in the Northwest?

Iam eagerly awaiting a new 1.5.6 patch that deals with multiplayer server crapping itself
