Perhaps, but I think those scenes were still pretty good and would not have taken away from the dark gritty feel...which if you think about it, has become Hollywood's most recent cliche. Not that I'm opposed to it, but notice how every action or comic sci fi movie for years now has to be "dark and gritty"? I think they got burned too much from "Batman and Robin" or something.

That's a DC thing. The Marvel films still have plenty of humor and light hearted moments in them.

Actually, the TIE fighter was never there. That was literally CG'd in by the trailer people to make the shot more exciting, there is no cut scene from the film with it.

Same with the scene of Jyn turning to look at the camera in the lit tunnel. It was literally a case of her walking on set, someone called, she turned, and the director said "OMG!! STOP! Set up the camera, we're getting this!"
It was shot and used just for the trailer because it otherwise had no meaning.

I know the scene at the beginning where Cassian shoots the other guy so he doesn't get captured and talk was part of the reshoots. Apparently many of the reshoot scenes were indeed to make it both grittier and to flesh out character motivations and defining moments.

That said, is anyone sad that the "I rebel" line wasn't used? smile

Nope! That line could have given some serious competition to "I truly, deeply love you" from Attack of the Clones.

I hated that, glad it's gone. We don't need a spunky new hero. They actually managed to do something NEW with Star Wars. The story that repeats itself for thousands of years. LOL
Never before have we seen the Force in a movie as a religion/philosophy outside of the Jedi/Sith business that I can recall. I really liked Donnie Yen in the movie, I would've liked to see more about his character. It was a good movie to broaden the universe for future movies.

Same here. Both his death and the death of his fellow temple comrade were rather poignant.

Eh...those are a bit gritty too. Look at the comic book version of their costumes v. the movie costumes. No bright flashy colors except for the latest version of Spider-Man.

Saw it Saturday. All I remember thinking was, dang this is a looooong movie. I had no connection with any of the characters and no feeling of loss when they perished.

I can see that happening if you haven't really been keeping up with the Star Wars saga. However, I am quite confident that had you watched Episode IV right before seeing "Rogue One" that your impression of the film would have been different.

Usually, I'm ok with the uniforms, especially the Afrika Corp inspired stuff but I can't let go of the Rebel soldier with the 70's flack jacket and M1 helmet and sometimes he has a grenade vest and the helmet. Looked more like a time traveler transported into the SW universe.

Yup. And what was the deal with that black Imperial outfit that Jyn was wearing near the end of the film? It looked like it had intercrossing sheaths on the back for swords. WTF? Is that the official Imperial Ninja uniform?

The original SW was shot in the 70s and used surplus WWII equipment for a lot of the props for cost reasons.
This film precedes that so they were keeping the design consistent.

As for feeling for the characters, it's a war film. I didn't give a damn about anyone who died in Saving Private Ryan or Tora Tora Tora or any of them. There's not enough time to get to know them. The formula is "here's the group of ragtag misfits in brief, here's what we're going to do, now we do it and it goes horribly wrong and we just manage to win at the end despite heavy losses."

While this was different for a SW film, it was the standard war picture formula.

Maybe that's one of the reasons that most war films actually rather suck.

Dang man... that's cold blooded hahahaha I've seen Saving Private Ryan probably at least ten times and still get a bit sad when Wade (Ribisi), Carparzo (Diesel), Jackson (Pepper) and Mellish (Goldberg) die attack

No, they just evoke emotion and make you grateful for the sacrifice of those who served. Or maybe that's just me.

Have you seen "Hacksaw Ridge" yet, that movie is AMAZING, actually surprised its not getting more Oscar buzz than it is, unfortunately probably has more to do with the director than the quality of the film. Definitely recommend.

Not enough light sabers. Actually, I haven't heard alot of buzz about an Oscar for Rogue One.
