Funny picture...admittedly had not heard the term bivouac used in quite some time, so had to see it and get a chuckle out of it. If there's one thing I can easily laugh in the face of and give the finger to, it's the typical Air Force jokes. I was in the only job that carried 210 rds of 5.56 every day. There's actually a few jobs in the Air Force now that carry that basic load regularly...JTACs, Security Forces and Para Rescue, though Security Forces walking ramp detail or special munitions areas might bear that burden daily, since they are not conducting air base ground defense. The JTACs and PJ's would only carry their basic loads during training or deployment cycles, obviously. Anyway, good on you for being one of those 3 I assume. I shied away from the Air Force because they lacked a serious ground combatant capability, though arguably not their main focus either.

Yes, I would say if you are interested in ground ops the USAF is a poor choice, unless you manage to get into special ops (hardly easy). Also poor if you have a strong naval interest. The Jedi Master

Yer, but fighter pilots get all the hot chicks. I think the ground pounders are jealous. LoL

Well if they can't swim, they will defend their ships more fiercely. So beeing a none swimmer, must be a *plus* for getting into navy service

The Jedi Master Touche...guess I was eluding the how relative carrying a basic load is to giving one's finger to the rest of the AF....when they still go home to very nice chow halls and billets, compared to much of the US military. And their Spec Ops guys, great assets, still not direct action sort of Spec Ops, but great team additions for their role.

I came in right after the changeover from Security Police to Security Forces. As yes, I had an M-16A2 to put the ammo in. Funny thing is, the only combat zone deployment I ever had was to Bosnia. We were required to carry that rifle at all times, even when off duty (when off duty we only had one magazine). Everyone on base was required to be armed at all times, and the base was dominated by 3d Infantry Division. However, the soldiers walking around had rifles, but WERE NOT ISSUED ANY AMMO AT ALL. Us airmen found it funny that the Army didn't trust their soldiers with ammo. But after an incident one night, I understood why. We were responsible for airfield security and the Army handled the perimeter of the base, which was dotted with M-60 towers. One night, a soldier thought it would be funny to spot his buddy in the tower with a laser pointer. He's lucky he didn't end up as swiss cheese. That put us in a three-day basewide alert.

Jedi Master, getting into USAF spec ops isn't difficult at all. Everyone I've talked to from fresh out of BMT to old timers like me when I went to BMT...everyone is asked while in basic if they'd like to consider joining Para Rescue (bad assest). Then there are also regular career fields that include TACP, JTAC, and Combat Weather (laugh if you want, it's still operator and necessary for airstrikes).
