What are the absolute worst sci-fi films you've seen since the 1990's? I'm not talking about which ones were the most disappointing but which ones were just so shockingly bad on every level (ie acting, writing, production values, etc.).

The first 4 that came immediately to my mind,

1. "Battlefield Earth"

2. "Jupiter Ascending"

3. "The Astronaut's Wife"

4. "Wing Commander"

You would have to be more specific. You mean only big production films?

Those movies you list bombed, but they are still AA films. There are thousands of sci-fi films that are far worse in plot and production values that would make any of those a masterpiece in comparison.

I think I can definitively find a sci-fi film disappointing, but I have never really disliked a bad sci-fi movie. I have even watched and kind of liked the Roger Corman's low budget stinkers - and laugh a lot when I watch Battlefield Earth.

Now, I do have walked out of movies, and the closest thing I can think of is The Fourth Kind. I actually found the whole situation and plot to be very stupid...does that count?

But for you, Panzer, I recommend this terrible low budget film trying to mix the tone of Men in Black with the plot and characters similar to of The X-Files - Sounds. THAT is a bad film.

Technically a "fantasy" film, but it still deserves to receive piles of ridicule for an incredible butchering: "Highlander II"

The reason why it turned out to be so bad was that the production company went bust when about 60% of the film were shot. They had some insurance company in Argentine which then sent their best and brightest insurance agents to make the decision to finish the film or to abort it, and unfortunately they decided in favor of the first option. And they knew exactly how to make it even better: The top grossing fils of all time had Aliens - so this one would need them too! They had an important message - so it had to be about the Ozone Layer! The most successful films also had CGI - so this one would need to have it (but it wasn't supposed to cost anything, since they were now operating on the insurance company's money). etc.

I only saw it once. I do not wish to see anything of it, ever, again in my life. I would rather watch Zardoz once more, and that one makes me wish to stab my eyes and ears with rusty pie forks. You gotta hand it to Sean Connery, though - he starred in two of the worst films, rivalling the then dead Ed Wood in production quality - and still acquired recognition as a half decent actor.

I have not been able to be drunk or high enough to enjoy "Buckaroo Bonzi". It will be interesting to see if Kevin Smith will be able to improve it with the sequel that was mentioned at the end of BB.

wing commander was truly crap

event horizon was pretty terrible too

Highlander 2 is in a class by itself, however

I agree, Highlander 2 was bad, and Wing Commander was bad too. I'm not sure this is sci-fi, but Deep Blue Sea about genetically altered sharks was pretty bad. And to me, Avatar fits the bill as well.

The Dungeons and Dragons movie.

Oh. My. God. The most embarrassing example of a "greatest fan" production with a lot of money, and why having 18 producers, co-producers, associate producers, executive producers, and a co-executive producer is a terrible, terrible idea.
Like the money/taste matrix. Only "lots of money" + "no taste" results in a societal problem, as evidenced.

Don't conflate the two in a single, simple "bad" category. Wing Commander was terrible, but Highlander 2 set a standard that, hopefully, no other commercial production (or any production by adults) will ever come close to rivalling.

The worst?

Anyone remember those garbage movies that the networks and syfy channel pooped out during the 90s to 2000s?

I should have been more specific in my original post and said the worst sci-fi films that had a medium to large budget. Those SyFy Channel movies each have a maximum budget of about one million dollars each so really how good can they be? The same goes for those ultra low budget independent films that Bib4Tuna mentioned.

I guess my point is that how sad is it that these studios pour tens of millions into making a film and it still comes out being total crap??

And at least the music by Queen was great.

...and it was kinda fitting. The original cinema serials from the 1930s weren't any better - Flash being enslaved by evil Ming, forced to shovel heaps of Radium into the open fire nuclear reactor.

OK, high budget productions then.

I'll add Elysium and Ender's Game. I definitely did not enjoy them as much. One for being overly preachy and having shallow characterizations of stereotypical characters, and the other for missing the tone and character development of the books.

Oh... I just thought of another one: Chappy. Of all the movies trying to bring up the discussion of what it means being alive using robots and AI, this one is all over the place.
