At last Christmas Eve's dinner, my sister convinced me that UBER was the hottest "app" around! Just dial it up on your cell phone and it'll tell you how much it'll cost to get to your destination, who your driver will be etc etc. No money or credit card transfer required either! All preauthorized ... and tips are actually frowned upon!? smile

I have an "open bar" function to get to next weekend so we're going to use UBER unless I hear otherwise here. smile

I know my son in law uses them when he is in Brussels or London for work, he says that they work just fine.

Taxi companies are few and far between here, I don't think there is one in our area, there is a stretch limo service about 15km from here and an airport taxi service in the next town but that's about it, public transport is an infrequent bus service or 20km to the train station.

How did your sister convince you? She uses it? You should be fine. Around here restaurants even use them for food delivery. I have not had the need to use UBER yet though.

They track you even when you are not using them. If that doesn't bother you then you are good to go.

Living out in the sticks there is no UBER available. Only 1 cab in town and he stretched
to the limit. I am sure those riders wish it was here. Never needed a cab.

My nieces and nephews use UBER all the time when they go out partying. Beats the designated driver thing ( which usually doesn't work).

Make sure you tip your UBER drivers. I know one and they tell me how UBER is continually squeezing them more and more. It is an awful company with a good service.

I use them when I go to D.C. for work. No use for them here in God's Country. I personally think its a really sweet setup for the consumer compared to cabs.

I do tip the drivers.. actually more money than I tip a cab driver. I think it's pretty poor form not do do so.

So does most apps companies... ever look at what they want access to on your phone and think "wtf do you need THAT info for?!?!"

Welcome to consensual super-spying! Today apps are more like a stalking ex than a harmless trinket for your enjoyment.

Did you hear about facebook? They now are identifying and tracking people who never signed up!!!! And they have facial recognition for any photos and vid on their site. So when "Amy" uploads a pic of the big party, facebook knows you "John Crampus of Wisconsin, son of D
Garry and Marry Crampus of Florida", are talking to "Little Dave".

At least in my area UBER is about half the cost of a taxi. I only use them though when I have to go to the airport.

Only if you give the app permission to use that feature. Just turn off the "location services" function on your phone and you're fine.

I'm truly shocked. I thought all of these "progressive" Silicon Valley companies were supposed to be different....

Every company is about paying its people as little as it can so the owners and/or shareholders can collect their big bucks. Those companies out there just practice self-delusion on top of it.

My wife's uncle started driving for Uber. He has PTSD and went from making $100k+ selling cars to being unable to be in large crowds anymore.
He likes Uber because he can work for as much or little as he likes and as long as he doesn't exceed what he can make to still collect disability (I think it's $700/month?) he can work.

He also commented on the tipping thing, apparently the Uber app in some areas (like here) doesn't offer tipping, so I think he set up square or something else so people can. He even put a little sign up that says something like "tipping not required but appreciated, God bless". He said maybe a quarter of the rides tip, which isn't great, but it's still better than nothing.

Can confirm. I just pulled up a taxi fare calculator for my area so for my trip both ways ... Taxi: $164 ... UBER: $78! Thatll get us there and back safely without breaking the bank! thumbsup

@Everyone ... thanks for the info

@Jedi ... sorry to hear about your uncles PTSD and thanks for the more in-depth tipping advice.

Just read a report that the average cost of raising a middle class child in the US is about 225k.

Cash is nice because there are no fees, unlike using many of these apps which all want a cut.
Considering you're usually only tipping a few bucks anyway, just carry some singles or fives!
