I went to Freeport or some such station and got permission to dock. They told me which pad but I saw no visual indicator to help me find where this might be. Usually there is some sort of visual guide to tell me where to fly around the station to find the pad or entrance. What might I be doing wrong?

At a station, once you enter through the airlock your Navigation Compass will put it's dot showing the direction of the pad.

Oh, and as to finding the airlock it's self, once you drop out of Supercruise at the station, target the station and you'll see it appear on your HUD (central left). Look at the HUD model closely, you'll see little arrows on it's sides. These arrows point to the side where the airlock is at.

One final note, most stations have their airlock pointed inward at the planet they orbit. So if you approach the station from the gap between it and the planet, more often you'll drop facing toward (or nearly so) the airlock side.

Even outside the station, the Nav Compass will first point to the direction of the slot then once inside, to the direction of the pad.

It's more confusing for smaller stations that have landing pads on the outside (small and medium stations). You'll have to fly around the station to find which one is lighted up.

Thanks guys!

Clydewinder, that's a good question. In other words, my HUD would have been affected. I'll have to check for that if this happens again. Come to think of it, this might have been the time I was attacked on my way to a basic data delivery mission, so it could be that the windshield was out.

By the way, concerning my growing pains into this game - I have restarted and decided to stay close to the Baker's Prospect area as I get my space legs. I took a mission from there and then returned there just for the navigation and docking experience. Gonna start off nice and slow with lots of breaks to get un-frustrated. biggrin

If your window was shut out, you'd know biggrin

I'd also suggest visiting a local Resource Extraction Site, which is usually on a planet with rings. Try out some pew-pew on some bandit ships -- you can do this even with a Sidey but just learn to pick your targets. I'd suggest going for gimbal weapons to make things easier.
