The eagerly awaited map of central Germany, Taunus, was released a few days ago.

If it slipped under your radar, you should check it out.

What a fantastic map. Lost of custom looking buildings, and very realistic looking terrains.

However my fps drop a fair amount when near the towns, anyone else get that? kinda spoils it, specially when you remember that with AI it'd be worse frown

Yes, my FPS is about 20 in the big towns. Out in the country, it's 40+.

Incredible map! Seems really well optimized to me. Thanks for the heads up Saghen. thumbsup

Then again, my test was with 2000 meters view distance on ground and 4000 in air, ultra graphics settings on an ultrawide 2560*1080 monitor.

I buzzed around Taunus in an MH-9 and dropped into as many large towns as I could find and I’m not having a problem at all in terms of on-foot framerates in towns ... around 40 fps.

After another look last night, I am even more impressed. Already I've got a list of mission ideas.

If you go to the massive cities, the FPS drop is a bit. If we concentrate our missions in the countryside and small enclaves, the FPS hit would be less.

Anyways, nobody told you to run Max everything in 4K. :P

What hardware? I've just upgraded to a 4K screen (from 1440p) and haven't run up Arma 3 yet....knowing that the game needs severe hardware and 4K might be a bit too much I'll have to see if I need to drop the resolution down to something non-native to get reasonable framerates.

for comparison
6700K @ 4.6Ghz
32GB RAM
GTX 1080

I'm thinking your 1080 should be able to handle the 4K res no problem Paradaz. Your 4.6 Ghz should cover the back end nicely as well.

I'm still using my old i7-3770K at 4.3Ghz and a GTX 1070.

Well I've had an initial check using Taunus, with my thinking that the map probably isn't as well-optimised as the stock map which will give a worst case performance indication.

Keeping my original settings with everything at Ultra I was locked at 30fps and thought that wasn't too bad (visibility set to 6000). I then hit the auto-detect button, went back into the game and noticed I was averaging 55fps and wondered why the big jump. It turned out that my 30fps was getting a big hit from the 8 x FSAA from my old configuration.....once that was dropped to 2 x it was 55fps average and I upped it to 4x for the 50fps.

I know that various scenes with urban areas and thick forestry blocks will have a bigger effect and probably bigger drops but I'm happy at the moment. Much more testing to do to find the optimal settings but surprised it's anywhere near 50fps to be honest -I was thinking 30fps would be more realistic.

Hoping to get back on and joining you guys on the SimHQ server very soon.

one thing i have noticed is that you always get better fps when not doing a mission in multiplayer. Offline i get a good 40-60fps on every map, in multiplayer, it hovers around 30ish dizzy

Nice!

Yes, I’d imagine 8xFSAA would take a video hit with the 4K! If I had a 4K monitor, I’d probably just turn off FSAA! Do you really need it?

If you ever need more FPS, you can tone down the view distance from 6000 which is pretty impressive in itself.

Definitely don't need 8x........can't see any difference to the image quality at all. I might dare to have a play with Tanoa next - I was forgetting that brings everything to its knees!
