Remember Outerra? That engine that showed off a couple of years ago and that could model a whole planet in detail?

Remember everyone saying how cool would a sim would be in that engine?

Someone did. And some are saying already, it could be the new ARMA.

War simulation. On a global scale.

At least on the demo, the clouds look pretty pretty bad to be used in a flight sim.

Also, the demo unistaller unistall Arduino for some reason! First time in my life I see a setup program that not only deletes the product but also any other random program you have installed... great.

EDIT: Yeah, it really f* up big time. It removed the demo from the start menu, but the files from another program as the demo is still on disk... Don't see why it would only happen with Arduino, so if you try the Outerra demo... beware.

Looks interesting. Those trees in the second video though ugh!
Definately something to keep an eye on.

Wow, looks impressive indeed!

It certainly resembles ArmA in a lot of details.

What I find interesting the most is that for some time ago I have had a "gut feeling", actually a personal opinion and belief that the future of most if not all PC simulations lies in having a common or universal game engine (even considering that different simulations would be made by different companies).
Such an approach would definitely cut down development costs and specially development time (two things badly needed for PC simulations nowadays and for the future as well).

Perhaps this "Titan Vanguard/Outerra" could be the beginning of such "universal engine" for PC simulations??

I doubt that would happen any time soon, however I have hopes of at least a common positional/data system at least, so vehicle positions & ordnance information could be transmitted between engines, so ArmA can play with DCS for example, each having a version of a common map and displaying their models in their engines. :/

Maybe. One day smile

Well, and again for that it would be much easier, faster and cheaper to have the two (or more) sims using (or developed in) the same basic (universal) engine than modifying existing different sims developed in completely different and unrelated engines to "communicate" with each other.

But while I believe (or have hopes) that the future of PC combat simulations will use the "universal engine" approach I agree with you that we won't likely see this happening anytime soon.

Well, the demo currently is for the development platform (TitanIM), not a standalone sim. So you would kind of need to work with the developer to make a good implementation. They do are thinking into releasing an ARMA-like sim.

The universal engine is almost here.

Ubi has been using that Dunia engine for Far Cry and other things for awhile now.

Codemasters has the EGO engine which I know is used for a lot more than their racing titles.

EA has Frostbite and they use it in FPS, RPG, and many other areas.

This looks really interesting but also I dont think they have a game at all. They just threw together something that looked like a combat sim.

Yes, the first steps towards the "universal engine" have been taken and your examples somehow shows this trend.

Yep, model a beautiful planet...and then stuff it full of bombs and guns and killing as if that's only possibility a planet might ever have.

You do you know you're on a forum where combat sims are a major subject of discussion, right?

That's nothing, back in the 90s there was some game that no only uninstalled the game but deleted the C:\Windows folder too.

There are plenty of other games like Civ where you can do other stuff.

When it comes to a game in first person, though, there really are not a lot of different things to do in a game that are practical or entertaining.

Fire Watch, but that was cutting it close from the entertainment POV. "Vanishing of Ethan Carter" was beautiful but a little dull, IMO.

I could see first-person sightseeing simulators for those who either can't travel themselves for various reasons, or are planning a trip and want to do some "recon". A glorified Google Maps/Street View is what I mean. smile

Try No Man's Sky for a game with billions of pretty planets and almost nothing to do.
