The pilots of VFA-41, the famed Black Aces, have successfully completed 21 missions of the Operation Eagle Guardian campaign. This very-near future campaign depicted NATO's response to an invasion of the Baltic States by Russian naval, air, and ground forces.
NATO ground forces, including Estonian self-defense forces and the U.S. 82nd Airborne engaged in fierce fighting with Russian forces around the capital, Tallinn.
The U.S. 1st Armored Division landed in Lithuania, moved across Latvia and began an assault against Russian armored forces in Estonia.
NATO ground forces in Poland then moved across the border into Belarus.
In the final mission, a flight of four F/A-18E Super Hornets was tasked to provide close air support to troops in contact under fire from a heavy machine-gun south of Pravdinsk in Kaliningrad.
The target was a watchtower on the edge of an Iskander tactical nuclear missile compound. The missiles had recently been deployed by Russia to Kaliningrad and were believed to in the final stages of being made active.
The attack plan called for destroying the designated target with precision-guided munitions, as it was possible that the nuclear warheads had been armed. Accuracy was essential!
Mission Debrief:
Bullseye! The watchtower was destroyed in a blinding flash and the incoming machine-gun fire stopped.
The Iskander tactical nuclear missiles in Kaliningrad were secured by British special forces.
Other NATO forces closed in on Minsk, the capital of Belarus.
Because of these developments, Russian President Putin has agreed to a cease fire to negotiate the withdrawal of Russian forces from the Baltic States.
