Scoring to date.....

A warm welcome to all the brave RiR airmen about to embark on Part 2 of the Fokker Scourge! If you haven't done so already, sign up with your forum name and pilot name here...

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Kgvo7hlKLjXhC8OdlDIlxSoghxC9Gkj2atIG-S07G10/edit?usp=sharing

Next, read the scene setters below and follow the directions for setting up your pilot campaign, based on which side you'll be flying for. The campaign calendar and updated rules will be following in this thread shortly. We start this coming Saturday!........

All good things seem to come to an end eventually, and after having dominated the skies above Belgium and France during the later months of 1915 and the winter months of 1916, the Fokker Eindeckers gradually became outclassed by newer Entente machines, including the Nieuport 11 “bebe”, the Airco DH2 “pusher” and the Bristol Scout. One final variant was produced in an effort to maintain some level of superiority - the EIV. Dual Spandau MG-08s gave this machine some fearsome firepower and the engine was beefed up to be able to carry the extra weight. In WOFF UE, the EIV handles better than the EIII, but is still not an easy craft to fly, requiring concentration at all times.

The Bristol Scout had its roots in civilian “air racing”. It’s engine was less powerful than the the EIV but its overall weight being less allowed it to keep up and it was highly maneuverable, providing you were careful with the throttle. Firepower was limited to a rather awkwardly placed Lewis machine gun, bolted to the left fuselage. In WOFF UE, with a well-constructed Track-IR profile, it is possible to lean to the left and use the gun sight to improve accuracy of shooting. This is the recommended technique for “RiR” as opposed to using the F6 view control.

These two are an interesting match. Both were assigned a mix of escort and patrol duties. With the challenge starting in the spring of 1916, generally the conflict in the air is turning in favor of the Entente, but RiR pilots with the EIV should still hopefully give a good account of themselves.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

“Ah, Hauptmann, yes, yes, come in and sit down. Would you like a cigarette? Schnapps perhaps?”

“Yes, thank you sir, both would be welcome”. The airman smiled nervously at his commanding officer as he sat down.

“I suppose you are wondering why you are here at Bertincourt? Let me explain: Our adversaries have been growing in both strength and number. We have decided to put our best pilots in key locations along the battlefront and arm them with the best machines that are available. I think you will like your new EIV. She is very fast and she packs a punch. We don’t have many of these machines, so you will do everything you can to keep yours in one piece and you will encourage your men to do the same, do you hear me? No unnecessary risks, Hauptmann, is that clear?”

“Yes sir! Perfectly clear”. The airman quickly downed his drink, then stood and snapped off a salute before making his way over to the hangar to inspect his new machine…..

Central Powers - enlist on May 1st 1916 with Jasta 1 (KEK Bertincourt) as Hauptmann, veteran

..............................................................................................................

“Captain, welcome to Baizieux! Do come in old chap and take a seat. Cigar? Brandy? We have both. Well equipped here, we are” the major said with a wink. The Captain sat and looked around.

“Jolly nice place you have here sir” he said.

“Yes, not bad is it? Anyhow, you’re probably wondering why you’ve been summoned. Let me explain Captain. We’ve managed to procure a few of those Bristol racers. Not many, mind, but enough to outfit some of the 2-seater squadrons that are located in strategic parts of the front. The Navy chaps got the rest of ‘em. Frankly, the brass have had enough of those blasted Eindeckers harassing our poor bloody BE2s. You’re going to be spending quite a bit of your time protecting our ones. You know the form, I don’t have to teach you your business. Just be a good shepherd and make sure to stay close to our little lambs. Don’t let them out of your sight for one minute, or some bloody Bosch is going to drop down out of the clouds and polish them off!”

“Yes sir, I’ll certainly do my best”.

“Good man”. Well off you go now and take a look at your mount. Erm, just one thing… you’ll need to practice a bit with aiming. Only bloody place we could put the gun to avoid blowing the prop to bits was on the side of the bally machine. Gets a bit nippy when you have to lean out of the cockpit to aim. It was Hawker’s idea so please don’t blame me! Still, should provide a bit of a fun challenge, what? OK off you go then, and good luck Captain!”

“Yes sir! The Captain rose from his chair, saluted smartly and walked off to find his mechanic. En route he bumped into a fellow named Barker, an up and coming young airman, who took some time to share his tips on how to fly the Bristol Scout and how to shoot!

Entente - enlist on May 1st 1916 with RFC-4 ( Recce / Bomber) as Captain, veteran

Nicely laid out HarryH. I am printing out maps for navigation and your list of mission-dates in anticipation. "No unnecessary risks" will be my motto as instructed ... I anticipate a difficult time staying alive in the EIV. A fun challenge!!

Good luck 77_Scout! Get some QC in that EIV before the weekend! I'll confess, I'm glad I'll be in the Bristol smile

Looks good Harry, just checking - In Cloud Fog is OFF? Been flying with it on for so long, should be interesting.

I wish that I could join, but I still won't have my PC until after the new year.

Anyways, I wanted to make a suggestion about missions which may make this challenge more uniform.

Since you know how to use the ME, you can generate each mission on your end and modify only the "route" section until you are satisfied with the waypoints and objective.

Then before the campaign mission, all pilots can use the ME to copy only the waypoint section and replace whatever was there previously. The pilots, friendly and enemy squads would not be changed. The mission briefing would be ignored and one would be made by you posted on this thread.

Just a thought.

Hi OldHat,

It's a good thought actually, but I don't think I'd have the time to do this each week for both teams (plus I'd get an unfair advantage by seeing both sides). I may come up with a couple of set missions during the challenge (TBD, still mulling some ideas), but for the most part I'm ok to let the campaign manager within WOFF assign the missions. It should even out the mission types for each pilot over the course of the campaign.

Sorry you can't join us for the kickoff, but do feel free to jump in once you have your new machine up and running. We'd love to have you involved!

Great HarryH, count me in.

This will be great fun! Looking forward for the Bristol Scout, it is handling like a charm... But the EIV is a fast beast, I´d say, they should be in control whether to attack or run, and so in the control of the engagement, much more than with the slow EIII...
Did a round with this Uber-Eindecker in QC, against a Bristol scout, and it was a huge improvement from the EIII...
But the Bris AI pilot was good in aiming with his offset gun, I can asure you! How did OBD manage to train them to do this? I still have to do some practice with this...

Nice finetuning of the rules and scoring aswell HarryH, looking forward for this one!

Should be a great challenge on either side! Good luck to everyone, and have fun!

Ehi, for some reason I have no RFC 4 available to enroll in frown

I got RFC 3, and AFC 4. Any idea?

solved: RFC 4 is recce/bomber :3

Man, I took a free flight into the Bristol Scout. After weeks playing the Eindecker this is just TOO NICE. It's awkward to aim, but at least the plane does what I am intended to do.

I noticed it had difficults to barrel roll, getting in stall as soon as the first half of the maneuver is underway. I tried to bring it to 100mph with same results.

Stalls seems easy to recover, even when entering a spin. I had the impression turning on machine gun side (left) is better than right. No idea if is model intended, but I wonder if the machine gun weight contribute to that. I tried to get in the tail and chase my wingman, I could have him well good in my aiming sight, but he was not hard turning. Took some shots on a Drachen, I figured out where I need to look on the canopy glass to guess where the bullets are going. very stable gunmount. I think this will be fun, hopefully I'll be able to get some boche!

Good observations Zifnow. I have found that I need to back off the throttle to be able to execute sharp turns in combat. otherwise I tend to completely lose control.. did you find that?

I never got which is the plane I can "RiR" throttle, I thought it was only for inline engines!

Also.. ehrm.. after changing mixture in Eindecker experience I had lots of engine failures, I'm little sscared to mess with the engine now smile

Zifnow, you raise a good point actually: I never use mixture control on the Eindeckers because I don't see a control for it in the cockpit...although I do know the in-game control works for it and takes effect. Also with Eindeckers I only use blip (no throttle) but for all I know the EIV may have had a variable throttle. We'd need an Eindecker authority to weigh in

As for the Scout, I have just assumed that it had a variable throttle. I know it has a blip switch and I do use that, as well as the variable throttle... let's ask for some clarifications on the forum. Someone is likely to know wink

Only having WOFF 2 and somewhat challenged by anything in the "guru" area of computer "geswhizzery" along with failing eye sight and will hit the 80 year mark very soon I will jump in and do "my thing"!!

Just for fun I have signed up a pilot in each squadron and will fly the mission for each on the same day. Could shoot myself down if not carefull smile !! One of my friends who is a CPA will keep score for each one of the chaps.

I live in a very small RV and have no room for maps and lots of screens.

Flying both airplanes will be a hoot.

Hi CWSF3, it's great that you are still "doing your thing" and having fun flying WOFF at almost 80! Good for you sir!

I will say though, that you don't need to be a computer whizz to get the performance improvements that WOFF UE has - just install it and you'll get an immediate frame rate boost! Maybe your CPA will treat you to it for Christmas smile

Cheers

OK, with OldHat's help I have figured out how to "RiR" fly the rotary engine: I've mapped the mixture increase /decrease buttons to my joystick and I've set them to zero increments in the workshop with the advanced button mapping control. Then I take off at full throttle and use the mixture decrease button until it starts to take effect, at which point there are two or three stages of decrease in RPM per click. The decrease becomes more dramatic below 5,000 ft.

I find I can use the decrease / increase mixture controls to control engine speed in flight quite effectively. For landing I decrease mixture on approach and then when I'm close enough I cut the engine and glide in, as seems to have been the historical way. I'm going to try this in the challenge and hope not to mess up!

...oh and as for messing up the Eindecker engine, it seems that frequent blipping with throttle wide open might be the culprit there, and not the mixture. I think it'd be perfectly "RiR" acceptable to fly the Eindecker in the same way as I describe above... although frankly, people can choose what they like for the purposes of the challenge smile
