Ooooh, a worrying moment for Herr Kemper!

Latest Scoring chart.... I'm probably missing a few missions here and there, but hopefully no one cares too much smile

Two aces still in it to win it! McCrotch and Harlowe have been the toast of the squadron recently. Meantime those poor Fokker pilots struggle on with increasingly outclassed machines.

Have to catch up reporting, mission 9, 10 and 11. No.11 almost was the last one for Paul McCudden, but he was lucky enough...

Mission 9, May 25th, Paul McCudden, railyard attack.

This is a combined attack of A and B flights on Athis Junction. Takeoff at 12:05, rain, but quite fair visibility. Climbed to our mission altitude of 6.000 feet. Cloud base at around 5.500 ft. Leader of A flight sticks to his plan. Maybe he likes to be concealed by the clouds, but I remember the words of my flight instructer, a cautious man, who teached me to stay out of the clouds when flying at visual flight rules ("After 6 minutes all VFR pilots fall out of the clouds, feet over head, dont do this! Learn to fly IFR first!").
After loosing our BE2s twice and my orientation once, I give up some of our height and stay below the clouds from now on.

The attack was a success, some of our bombs hit the railyard nicely and a lot of stuff blew up. A flight turned home. As there was no E/A there possibly harming them (and as they most propably would use the hide in the clouds trick to sneak out stealthy), I decided to strafe the yard aswell. We did and damaged the two big depot buildings, left them burning and partly collapsed behind us. Dont know how this works by gunfire only, but I like it!

Returned to Baizieux, found our BEs there. No losses and a successful mission outcome!

Mission 10, May 28th, Paul McCudden, arty spotting.

Another early morning mission, takeoff at 0435, A flight of 3 BE2s scheduled to do artillery spotting of eny infantry south of lake Etang de Haute, Barker and me to assist. So we were a large formation, first time.

Eventless climbing and heading towards target area, crossed the Somme river.

We went in front of our BE2s zigzagging and going forth and back to compensate their lower speed. When turning towards our boys again there was something behind them. 2 specks! Had to check them out!

They showed a thin signature- Eindekkers!
Did a shot to alarm our men and engaged. They seemed to be surprised, were quite focussed on our 2-seaters, we both fired at them, together with the BE2s observers, and scored hits. They immediately disengaged, one went in a steep dive, the other one went eastwards, staying at altitude. I did chase him for a few miles, but was not able to gain on him. Finally turned to the target area again to take care of our arty spotters.
Being over enemies land spotted two specks left of my track, they were higher than I was. Leaned to the right to avoid them. They disappeared towards my 8 ao clock, felt relief...

Arriving at our target area I start to scan for our men. Nobody. Then there was something. Specks. Three-ship formation. Our people? But no- the V-formation was breaking apart and the planes start to swirl around- towards me! Fighters, Eindekkers, again! And this time, three of them, higher than me, angry, and I was alone! Dive away? To late, they were there, shooting at me, and they were good! So I turned, changed direction, avoided to be hit, tried to be a difficult target, and maybe get a shot of opportunity... Finally dived to the deck towards the West, hoping to get some aid from the ground troops... This seemed to have scared some of them off as there was only one Einy left... So I finally got out of my victim role and turned towards him, attacked! Got some good shots at him until my gun jammed once again, we all had enough, and turned home.

No losses today either, our spotters completed their mission, next time I am going to stay with them, I promise!
The mission was a success, but it could have ended completely different.

Mission 11, Paul McCudden, May 31st, arty spotting.

Target around SE of Arras, 2 BE2s, 2 Bristols, as so many other times before. Takeoff around 6 oclock, bright day, some cumulus clouds.

Climbed to 7k, went towards our target area. When crossing the frontlines we observed some traffic. 3 specks at our 2 o clock, higher, going northbound.
Left of us, 2 specks, same altitude or little lower, looking like a biplane, with an almost invisible tail... FE2b? DH2? Most probably friendly, anyhow! And the others, the threeship? At our 1 oclock now, crossing our path from right to left, seemed to ignore our presence, small signature again, and only one pair of wings-Eindekkers, again! Dont they see us?

And then, (once again one of these WOFF moments, when you realize, that all of your hopes are pointless,) the Fokker leader gave the signal, and one after the other, they came down to us!!

Turned to attack, to get some shots on the first pass, maybe to scare some of them off, to increase the chances for our flight of four... What was this? While the unique signature of the first Einy is rising in my sights there is suddenly something odd: There is oil on my windscreen! Engine damage? No! Please, not now!

Turn and flee? No way, this would leave our flight in a devastating shape, it would ruin the morale and the chances of our men. At least stay until the merge, and get some shots! Shot on the first two enemies, then turned westbound, diving, cutting the engine again amd again, more and more oil on the screen now. The Eindekker on my tail kept me from shutting down the engine completely... Turned with him and got some shots at him, he dissappeared in a steep dive. Turned to our lines, the engine is getting weaker now, dived towards the rear of our trenches, looking for a spot to take her down.

Waited too long to cut her down completely, suddenly flames were coming from the engine, cut the fuel, slipped to keep the flames from me. Finally I managed to put her down between some tree stumps. Coming to a halt undid my harness and was able to jump out of my wrecked Scout. Stumbled away a few yards, collapsed.
Some soldiers took care of me. Surprisingly I was only lightly injured and taken to hospital. Supposed to stay here for 10 days. Learned later that one of our BE2s was completely destroyed, both crewmembers were killed. The others fighted bravely, scored kills and returned. CO regarded the mission as a success, despite our losses. Plan to be in the air around June, 9th. Happy to be alive!

Keep going Alfons!! Maybe I could join you with a secondary pilot, as Paul is off duty for some days, after his crashlanding... But flying Fokker now must be tough...

Thanks LowDrag! It's worse than that ... I am flying and Aviatik. nope

Nice report. Seeing your plane on fire is a scary experience isn't it? You did great to get down alive!

Well done LowDrag, still alive! June 9 mission is scheduled for this week anyhow, right? So you'll soon be back up.

77_Scout - sure you can have the bonus points providing you were the flight leader...lmk.

Heh heh, you're a tough referee Harry RTFM

Nope, I wasn't the flight leader, so maybe I am out of luck. (I didn't see that wrinkle in the rules-writeup, did I miss it?)

My hopes of to contributing to Team Germany are fading fast. Sorry boys ... my third pilot is forced to be rookie so most of my flights are going to be 'follower' (unless I cheat and cycle mission until I get leader position, which seems wrong) so no way to get any points.

Hah, ok I'll give you the points. The Central Powers certainly needs them smile

Plenty of EA about this week it seems! I now end my missions by hitting the J key, taking the sim out of "pause" and then left-clicking one by one through the aircraft that are still up there, just to get a sense of what is / was around. I love this sim smile

Cpt. Nelson flew his two missions for this week and got his first victory - unfortunately I managed to crash to desktop while filling out the claim report (user error I think - I have a new keyboard and I hit a bad key combo by mistake). Had to fly it again and no repeat success was to be had. Lost my wingman due to engine fire. Recent enhancements including Ankor's wonderful cockpit mod (less blue triangles, yay!) and 40LM's awesome texture upgrades are making this challenge ever more immersive for me.

Cheers all.

Easy come, easy go. I just lost a wingman to a hit-and-run attack by a British pusher (probably a DH2). Goodbye recently acquired points! banghead

June 6, 1916 artillery spotting. Here is my wingman gliding for home. Apparently the landing didn't go well ...

June 9, 1916: Bombing of enemy airfield ...

Ach! Oil on the windshield. Time to shut down engine and glide home.

I let the mission run (afraid exiting would cause bad results, as sometimes happens). One Aviatik returned and two others were reported shot down over the target.

We are down to only 3 aircrews. Rolands, where are you?!!

June 12 1916 - Capt. Nelson managed to force down HA Max Ritter Von Muller, south of Albert. His flight had just returned from an escort mission and just as they were circling to land, Nelson noticed some puffs of Archie. Turning to investigate, he encountered the lone Eindecker machine. They circled for a while until Nelson found his way onto the Hun's tail and after several bursts, sent him earthwards. Nelson had no witnesses, having already ordered his men to land. His claim was subsequently denied due to lack of corroborative evidence.

June 15 1916 - a trip south east to escort a BE2C bombing run of a Hun airfield. No incident, no EA encounters.

We are half way through the challenge! Unfortunately MFair has had to drop out due to a scary tornado event in his area. He is safe and well and busy helping less fortunate neighbors. Good luck MFair! The Central Powers need help. so if you want to fly for them as well as the Entente, create a pilot and have at it!

Yikes! Glad to hear MFair is OK.

I should be back in the air in my old Aviatik tomorrow. Tough times on the German side! Hope I can hang on long enough to get a better aircraft.
