Random Delayed Engine Start Mod v1.00

Compatible with all versions of WOFF

“Not to worry, the squad will be up and running in short order!” says the officer on the flight line...

Provides a staggered engine start-up pattern for your squad over a period of several minutes when your mission starts on the flight line to simulate starting attempt failures and a slightly less perfect world in getting your squad airborne.

If you want to get airborne fast from a cold start on the flight line, this is not the mod for you!

If you like to soak things up more slowly and would prefer to watch your wingmen start their engines randomly over a period of several minutes before you roll on takeoff then you might enjoy this mod. This mod simulates a less organized start-up allowing for things like having to re-spin the prop because a pilot has forgotten to turn his magnetos on, etc.

You may see Planes 3, 5, and 8 start-up. They may start up in close unison, or they may start-up in sequence or out of sequence. Most of your flight might start-up fairly quickly but then you may find yourself waiting for a minute or two for Plane 7 to fire up. The start-up process becomes completely random.

Note: This mod also affects the takeoff roll. If you use Autopilot for takeoff you may have to wait for a minute or two before your plane starts to roll after engaging the Autopilot (while other times your plane will roll almost immediately). Same for your wingmen, they may roll quickly or they may roll on a delayed basis.

Autopilot everywhere else in WOFF is unaffected. This delay only affects takeoff from a cold start on the ground at the beginning of your mission.

Directions

1. Place the downloaded zip file in a temp directory and unzip it. Then run the “Random Delayed Engine Start v1.00” application. It will immediately appear in JSGME ready for activation.

2. Activate “Random Delayed Engine Start” using JSGME.

This seems like a really interesting mod addition to add into the immersion factor! Thanks

Very cool Bucksnort!
How did you come up for the idea for this? Or did you find it looking for something else?
In any case I will certainly give it a test run. Thanks!

Sounds interesting. I'd like to know the ingredients of the medicine I'm taking before I swallow. So, if you don't mind sharing the knowledge, I'd really like to know what you've changed inside the simulation.xml file to make this happen. You can PM me if you don't want to post it here.

Oh! and keep up the great work you're doing on making MODS. It gets lonely over here.

Awesome mod Bucksnort.
Truth be told the "quick start" of default WOFF was always a bit of a peeve of mine.
What's the point of all the airfield modding if you only have 3 seconds to look at it? Or the sweet paint job on your wingmans plane. Hey! I am still getting my "cockpit" ready - wait up.

Anyway, sweet mod and it works great!

EDIT: If you "modded" your Time Compression, like I did, you will have to open up Bucksnort's file here and change it again. Obviously only takes about two seconds. Just FYI...

Thanks, guys!

Duke, I just stumbled onto it a couple of weeks ago while I was looking at the time compression mod you or Hellshade (or somebody...lol) explained in their postings.

OldHat, JJJ65 has your answer! One simple number smile

Hi Bucksnort,

I just tried to DL the random engine start mod and the link appears to end with a deleted file. I also checked the WOFF site user mods section and it wasn't there. Is there somewhere else I can find a working link to your mod?

Hi Lehmann,

Fixed the first link to my Dropbox download. Thanks for letting me know!

Have sent the mod to OBD and they should have it up on their website in the next day or so.

Cheers! smile

This is a great idea! The lack of delay was something that bothered me before, and now it just feels right smile2

.

Bucksnort, I downloaded this mod and gave it a go. It is now on my 'must always have activated' list. Well done! Now then, if you can sort out how to keep the engine running after landing so that I can shut it off when I want to and not when the sim decides to, that would be great!

Bucksnort, thank you very much for digging this out and sharing! I found the standard engine start sequence with immediate subsequent start of the takeoff roll always somewhat "rushed". Great find with those random delays. Personally I tuned them down to just 30 seconds, just to add this more realistic effect of your mod, but without having to wait up to 3 minutes hehe.
Great work, Sir, thanks again!

Yes I have been playing with different times also. Still a great find.

Duke and LowDrag,

Yeah, I experimented with everything from 30 to 90 seconds. The shorter times seemed too short when there are 12 planes on the line, and the longer times seem too long when there are 3 planes on the line. hahaha

But its great everybody can change it around to suit!

It is a nice feature to have some randomness (taking longer to start the dud engine bla). Remember that there are also missions for you and AI to intercept incoming AC. So when they are on the runway, enemy presence is triggering their start etc. This "quick" startup sequence is simulating them sitting on the airfield with already running engines, waiting for the call of inbound aircraft. Taking too long might break it. So must be properly tested.
While it is true that inline engines needed some warmup time etc. rotary engines did not in real.

No, this mod does not work in WOFF UE.

(sorry guys, got a bunch of pm's, so will just post the answer here once and not reply to each one)

IIRC, and I apologize for my poor memory, one of the UE patches made a change to the Simulation.xml file.
