Anyone notice the lag in the net this morning ? I did not notice since I was working on a plumbing project and did not get back online till around 11am when it was pretty much restored. Interesting article on what may have caused this DOS attack. http://www.popularmechanics.com/technolo...gs-ddos-attack/ Funny thing happened yesterday, I get a text message from the wife about we need to chat and open up this link on my work phone. My work phone is old Samsung flip phone that is impossible to use for texting. So I text her back on my personal phone and find out from her, that her friend in the cities was video chatting with her the other day and used this app that she needed to install to work, she did and it also sent that text to every contact in her phone. Told her to delete it right away. She is not very tech savy and had no clue to even begin to know how to delete it. Her friend at work had to clean up her phone and all the angry return texts.

Every internet connected device, in my home, uses a unique password to access their respective host (usually a service provider, i.e. Honeywell for my thermostat). If someone is dumb enough not to enable distinct account access then they are just asking for trouble.
In the case of DVRs, most of them are tied to the cable/sat company that provided them without isolated accounts. These days they are usually built into the decoder box. This is an entirely different situation from most thermostats, security systems and other networked systems. It would still require compromising the host systems.
None of my devices can be accessed without first compromising the host servers of the hosting company, and then my personal password.
Flooding a network is almost always possible, but it takes a determined effort to do it with any level of success.
Even if you have a good AV program installed on your fridge, it won't protect you from a DDOS attack, since the source of the problem is not on your machine.
No offence but, personally, I would not use Popular Mechanics as a reliable source for IT security information.

Ha. This come at the perfect time. My company offered my a position in the IOT department and I was thinking it would be a freakishly good opportunity to check what our clients (one of which is one of those big ass companies) are doing in terms of security. Too bad I'll probably have to sign one equally big ass NDA where even my soul and firstborn are invloved.
When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

I don't see any of those companies as having access to my home network, unless I specifically connect to them. Which, in this case, sounds like I would have never been able to connect, creating no problems in my home.

umm.. read the article.. Its coming from the internet of things! This afternoon, Dale Drewthe chief security officer for Level 3, a tier 1 Internet backbone providerbroadcast an informative Periscope video explaining what exactly is going on here. He also says Dyn isnt the sole victim. Were seeing the bad guy rotate through quite a few DNS providers, trying to add some instability to the Internet. A portion of the attack originates from the gigantic Mirai Internet of things botnet, Drew says, which was recently used in a DDoS of unprecedented size. About 10 percent of the Mirai botnet nodes are active in this attack on Dyn, though those nodes arent the only ones targeting the DNS provider. Check it out in the embedded tweet below... assuming Twitter is working for you. I still don't see home devices affected, unless you were trying to access them over the internet. The attack affected a DNS service, not individual home hardware. If I can't access twitser (not a typo) then that is not a problem that I consider significant.
Had no problems with any of my services today.
Reread, I think I see where you are going, about the 'Internet of Things'. If companies are selling crap hardware, with crap software, creating vulnerable nodes on the internet, then there is a major part of the problem.
Don't put junk, or the thing your friend build out of an arduino, onto the internet and lots of this stuff will not happen.

I don't have many (any?) such devices, but it seems that every-other home device some friends have access to services and update themselves over the web. Is that enough of a door to infect those devices? And as I understand, it's the home devices themselves that were being infected. They were hijacked as part of the sources of the DDoS attack?

And as I understand, it's the home devices themselves that were being infected. They were hijacked as part of the sources of the DDoS attack? If that is the case, then I would have to see more documented details. There are more home, not mobile, devices running Linux than any other OS. So was this a multi-OS attack or did someone manage to infect all of the coffee makers in the world? I have over a dozen electrical switches, six Amazon devices, and four PC's, not counting phones, tablets, and other connected devices in my home. Nothing failed, which they would have had they been busy contributing to a DDOS attack. Again, root of the problem, poor security measures. The botnet scans the Internet for IoT systems protected by factory default or hard-coded usernames and passwords, according to Krebs blog KrebsOnSecurity. Botnets can exploit weak security measures such as standard password and username combination (eg admin, 1111) across devices.

My wife got hit with the exact same phone chat app. She went to install it and it sent a text to everyone on her contact list. Told her to delete it and text everyone on her contact to not install it and delete the message. My wife is still pissed at me for giving grief over knowing she technically challenged and even more so after her stroke. Heard all about tonight when I took her out for dinner. And all sad was to delete it. Then again, knowing she don`t know how that works. Guess I had it coming. The challenges of living with someone who has suffered a stroke gets more challenging by the day.

The world of the future...
Where some demented 14 yr old from Wierdovia can boil you in your own shower for the Lulz.
Now that's progress! Sad but true, that is if you fall into the internet connected water heater market.Afraid that day it not far into our future though.

Oh oh... beter phone home and check my central heating system, at least it does not have a default user name and password. I installed it to keep an eye on the house as the downstairs neighbour is the key holder while I'm away and he liked to turn up the heating during the winter to keep his house warm By heavens it made a HUGE difference to my gas bill

Yup. Because people never want to think about security until it's too late because it's just so inconvenient.
We had a rash of car thefts recently by a group of teens who would walk around looking for unlocked cars. Failing that, one security camera feed showed the teen get in the car, get out, walk into the house, come out with the keys, and drive the car away. This was rich--the homeowner had a security camera watching their driveway, but didn't bother to lock the car or their house. At night.

Best defense is not to get noticed. And I was an idiot because I did things that got noticed.
Everytime I see an attempted attack logged by my "system" (intentionally being vauge here). I get a chuckle cause anyone targeting me would mean that that person's life is pathetic.
It's a bit uplifting to know there are losers out there whose life is so pitiful they need to focus on others. Still, it's annoying nonetheless.
