North Carolina's is going on now. Me and the family go every year (almost). A people-watching sight to behold! (like going to Walmart at 3am) But the food....sausage w/peppers & onions, funnel cakes, and now this! http://www.wral.com/bacon-wrapped-grilled-cheese-is-hit-at-fair/16127742/If they have WiFi at the critical care ward, I'll let you know how good it was.

I use to go to the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair as an early teen, parents would drop me off and I'd find friends. I remember one year wearing a cheap cowboy hat and boots, along with an arrowhead neck chain. I believe the area was going through an "Urban Cowboy" craze at the time ("lookin' for love in all the wrong places" - lol). The last one I went to I remember well because I saw my first live band performance, The Producers... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzZVhwa2sSAIn addition to "She Sheila" they also played their two other 'hits', "What's He Got?" and "I Love Lucy." I was mesmerized and hooked on live performances ever since. I assume they still have bands playing at these things?

They did not have the bacon wrapped cheese sandwich at the Western NC State Fair this year. We always go to the fair each year too. We try to go on Sunday mornings to avoid the crowds and teenagers as much as possible. The kids enjoy the rides, livestock and the bees. Personally I think some of the vegetables that get entered and win aren't as good looking as what we grow but they entered, we didn't. The kids dread looking at the quilts and crafts... I can't really blame them but the wife deserves to look at stuff that interests her too.
Best part about the fair is that cool weather usually shows up soon after.
The road less traveled is filled with fewer needy people.

Last one I went to was in Dade County in the early 90's.
There's a little one that comes locally here twice a year, but I don't think it counts because it's so small compared the DCYF one.

The Jedi Master Imagine 5x the number of people and 5x the number of gang member wannabes and that's the DCYF now.

You guys are peaking my interest. I didn't know State Fairs were seasonal, ours is about to get started next week... http://www.gbrsf.com/I'm leery of portable rides, but I might go just to get in some walking while checking out the scene. I think I'll avoid the delicacies though.

Ours just ended. Haven't been excited about it since I was a kid, just felt like a waste of money. The shish-kabobs are good though. The kids enjoy it though. Old rides, my kids are on the same rickety things I was on. No telling how old these things are.

From what I have read and heard the portable rides seem to be more safe than the ones at big amusement parks because they are tore down regularly and any defects tend to be noticed more quickly. Michigan had a huge 'state fair', decades ago, on 8 mile road, in the city of Detroit. That ended....a decade before Detroit did. The old one got, ugly. Lots of predators lurking around, fewer real participants. Maybe it's the changing culture. Young people just don't seem to leave the house much anymore. Fingers on the buttons. Dunno.
A new one was just started up about 5 years ago....about 20 miles away from the city, in Novi, far from the city of Detroit. Haven't been to that one. Hope it's doing well.

Yeah, a lot of things were 'promised' by Detroit, and it's promoters and management. Try the one in Novi LB. I'm sure you'll find it much nicer than the one you remember in Detroit. And you won't get 'robbed' or 'carjacked', which is no longer consider a regular exhibit, in Novi.
