Thanks for sharing. This brings back memories. I had F-18 Korea and played the heck out of it. I liked escorting passenger liners off Honolulu. biggrin

If you go back to 2003 when I first joined SimHQ, you'll find my first ~2,000 posts is about this sim and the reason I even found this place (there was a dedicated PSF/OIF forum). Yup, I miss it too.

EDIT: Community Hall seemed scary to me at the time, much like PWEC does today. biggrin

I think the Hornet series was a great balance from a realism, systems, and game-play perspective (similar to Flaming Cliffs 3, I guess, but with carrier ops!!!).

However, I think it would be hard to get past the graphics and lack of a Track IR capable 3D pit at this point.

Lol me too Mark. Community Hall used to make me feel like the new kid walking into class for the first time. PWEC is an interesting place to visit but I try not to get involved. smile

I still remember Hornet 3.0, yeah I "escorted" those airliners, that's what I did... attack

IIRC this sim does not work with throttle axis.

or is there a mod to assign the throttle to z axis?

It works fine with throttle and rudder.

is this the same game as fa18 korea?
last time I tried, it won't detect my throttle.

how do you do it?
how do you make the game recognize your controller?

I use Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS X. There's one thing to note. The HOTAS I use have 2 modes - 4 axis and 5 axis. It has 2 axis for stick, 1 axis for throttle and 2 axis for rudder - stick twist or rocker switch on throttle. In 4 axis mode the twist axis is not used and you can lock the axis with a screw. And here's the thing - in 4 axis mode the throttle wont work, but when you switch to 5 axis mode you will notice that the throttle works but is assigned to rocker button and the rudder to twist axis on the stick IIRC. So I had to remap the axis so that I had throttle on the throttle axis and rudder on the rocker switch. The remapping on this joystck is made purely in hardware there is no software neccessary.

In case you guys don't know, the original developers, Graphsim, have ported it to iOS:

Hi damson,

can you tell me how to run this game under win7?
I have tried installing it, but it seem there is something wrong with the mouse,
when I try to change the screen resolution and the controller setting, the game hangs.
when choosing the training, too.
on the training page, the mouse does not work, and the game hangs.
please advise.

Hey tirta, I just fired up the PSF on my Win7 laptop and it works just fine. I have no compatibility settings set on the exe. In game options I have set 1024x768 resolution, ticked OpenGL and Auto-set Monitor Resolution. I have AMD Radeon HD6850M on this laptop, but on my other PC with Win10 I have Nvidia and it works fine too.

Too bad it's not available on Android.

Hi damson,

thanks for the reply.
I have tried my other system in the office, but it won't work too.

so I have tried installed both the fa18korea and fa18PSF on both systems,
both do not work.
it is very odd, all has the same mouse problem.

then I try to install fa18OIF.
luckily this one still works. biggrin

is it possible to put the missions from fa18PSF to fa18OIF ?
will it work?

OIF has different theatre of operations - Kuwait and Iraq, while PSF has Korea so the missions probably will not work.

There were some mods but I only came across ones for PSF and they were mostly graphics based like the ones you can see in the vid - cloud texture and engine color. mlracing modified the code to some degree implementing some cool features, you can check the thread here:

Well, my copy of F-18PSF runs pretty well - same goes for OIF/ODS, and I'm really curious about those mods. Unfortunately, all the links in this old thread are dead...

So, in case someone made a backup of the mods, I'd really appreciate some active link in order to retrieve them. Don't hesitate to PM me.

Cheers, Andro
