I have to say that this is my all time favorite sim and/or game. Just something, for me, about the crew management, briefing, and unpredictability of the flak, all came together to really cause me to become emotionally involved.
Or, as we simmers like to say, "immersed".

[Re: ikrananka]
I hated piloting the B17 and I thought the cockpit looked terrible, but I loved everything else. Good memories of getting spooked by flak, the stress of finding the target in overcast cloud, the heartbreak of seeing a bomber go down with my personalized crew, the exhaustion after nursing a wounded bird back to base. If I remember well, the briefing and debriefing reports were all written "in character".
I did have to respectfully decline a mission to my hometown however... Can't risk causing a time paradox.

Loved B17 and it's sequel though both were way ahead of their time which caused criticism for people trying to play the sequel on inferior rigs. Ultimately though the fact that the developers promised multi-player with people all together in bombers attacking vs others in fighters defending and only delivered a single-player game was it's downfall.
A new developer should take this over and work it up into multi-player as it would definitely be a success if done right.

[Re: ikrananka]
So true Georgio spent ton's of hours with the original B-17 and B-17 II TM8th (actually still play B-17 II TM8th). Personally though I can't put all the blame of what didn't happen with B-17 II TM8th on the developer Wayward Design. As I understood the sequence of events back then at the old Bombs Away site, when Microprose was purchased by Infrogames, it was Infrogames that made the decision to halt any further development of B-17 II TM8th. I suspect Infogames instructed Wayward Design to wrap it up and get it out as-is, it's the old "got to do what the boss say's even if you know it isn't right". Seemed no one wanted to be in the CFS business anymore besides the guys at 1c. While I don't like to see anyone lose their job I hope whoever made the decision on B-17 II is in a different line of work now since 1c showed them there was still money in the genre.
I also don't blame the B-17 community for the backlash that followed the announcement of no MP since there was such high hopes for this title, but I do feel the guys at Wayward were genuinely just as disappointed. At least someone at Wayward convinced someone at Infrogames to give the community the OMF editor and R&R files to help squeeze a little more from B-17 II.
Just a side note for anyone interested, if you do some digging with the OMF editor you can find the TGA files that show what the MP interface would have looked like in B-17 II had it been finished so it's kind of why I don't suspect Wayward Design was being misleading about the MP. Had Infrogames given Wayward Design maybe another year I suspect we would have had some form of working MP and probably more fleshing out with the in game visuals department. Again a little digging with the OMF editor will show some interesting things that I don't think are used in the actual game. To me B-17 II TM8th always seemed like a very workable Beta but with a ways to go.

[Re: ikrananka]
Good to hear a bit more depth to the title, though it is a pity that it seems they were pretty close to getting workable MP. As it was I had more sweaty flights home across the Channel in a smoking 3 engined B17 than anything else, the sense of immersion was second to none. I always remember doing the training missions and thinking that the Nordan bomb sight was child's play only to have the bombs all fall short by a large margin. Ok I thought maybe this actually takes some work and of course it does, but ultimately the sense of achievement to fight your way along the bombing run desperately hoping you can have enough time for the computer to give you a release cue, then to see your bombs perfectly bracket and destroy the target, then jump on the guns to drive off fighters, give first aid to crew members all while trying to navigate home is a pretty intense experience.

Good times with this sim. tip: Try a of missions as BC if you like but move i right on to the SC campaign. as SC you plan the recon, targets, routes to avoid flak and can more effectively train crew.

There's more to the story, too. In 2005 GMX leased the rights to B17-2 along with Rowan's BoB, and shopped around for someone to turn both into updated and improved versions. Shockwave (now A2A) bit, and after a while realized they weren't going to get nearly the support they needed for the job, as GMX seemed to think that both titles could be done in a year, with not much funding. As it was Shockwave barely got a working BoB2 out, and had to forgo the multiplayer aspect, to get it out the door on GMX's timetable, relying heavily on the work the BDG had done with the semi-public release of the BoB1 source code in the 4 years since the BoB1 release. B17 was just not possible so it was shelved after about 6 months of preliminary work. Shockwave as far as I know never got a multiplayer coder on board thus no work was done on the multiplayer aspect of either sim.

Thanks Ikrananka,I was watching it late last night but started to fall asleep (not a fault of your video I might add,it was a long day) so will finish it off today.
I forgot just how much there was to do in this game and your video series perfectly explains everything.

[Re: ikrananka]
I noted your reservation on using the “High” difficulty setting in the video- I agree. Setting the turbos, fuel mixtures, cowl flaps etc manually is nearly impossible. I have found it best to leave these adjustments to the AI copilot. I think there are a narrow range of settings in the engine management program that the AI considers within range. During the campaign under high difficulty settings, you can have a positive effect post target, by looking over the AI shoulder and carefully monitoring the engine manifold pressures, oil temperatures, Carb temps, CHT etc and make small changes to The RPM, throttles, intercoolers using the right mouse button to tweak engine performance. But remember that my overriding goal was to hand engine management back to the AI as soon as I finished my tweaks.
#4313525 - 11/19/1610:31 PMRe: B-17 The Mighty 8th - Getting Started Tutorial Video Series - Now Available!!!
[Re: Vox]
I finally gave up on the high difficulty setting when I saw that even with the AI managing the engines the carburetor air temperature was being kept too low (pop up text was in blue). According to the patch 2.0 notes this would have led to engine damage (low carb temp combined with high rpm). This was early in a mission, before engaging the enemy, and so was steady level flight. Any yet, even under these conditions the AI is so poor that it can lead to engine damage without any involvement from flak or enemy fighters. So, I'm going to stick with the medium difficulty setting from now on.

Hi Ikrananka,,,,, I am thinking of putting this back on my computer...loved the game back when and even with dated graphics now, I still love the realism when you are piloting as enemy fighters whizz by, gunning at bandits or bombing the target with flack,,,white knuckles for sure.
On the installation video 1, what graphic card are you running..I have win 8.1 pro....with a g-force 970. I haven't seen the whole video so you might say,,,but can you please tell if you have heard if people have had success in installing an running B17.
The videos would be what I need to follow the path back home.

I have installed and played the game successfully on Windows 7 and 10 (both 64-bit) and both with AMD video cards. According to both GOG and Steam the game is compatible with Windows 8. Will you be installing from your original discs or from a GOG or Steam purchase. If the latter then I'd have a lot of confidence that it will work fine under Windows 8.1. I have no experience with original disc installs of the game so cannot comment there.
Let me know how you get on

A fine game. I used to crash all the enemy fighters and fly the short AF and Coastal missions. All u had to worry about was flak. I would love to see this game, updated graphics, treated like like WOFF.

The eighth video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I focus on Training Mission #5: Bombing (Poor Conditions). I focus on the procedure I use for the bombing run, correcting for drift and rate error to achieve synchronisation as early in the bomb run as possible.

The ninth video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I focus on Training Mission #6: Gunnery. This is actually a relatively useless training mission. My main recommendation is to instead practice your gunnery by playing Quickstart Missions #2, #3 and/or one of the historical missions in the game.

The tenth video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I focus on Quickstart Mission #1: Limping Home. This is a challenging mission to land a badly mauled B-17. I introduce the use of trimming the plane which makes the mission so much easier.

[Re: ikrananka]
After the Getting Started vids I'm going to move on to a Squadron Commander Let's Play with a historical twist that I'll reveal at that time.
Yeah, I'm not a flight simmer at heart, but nevertheless the B-17 game captured me. I love WWII based games and playing wargames and so the era and historical nature of the subject were still of great interest to me. As I slowly got up to speed with the game I grew to love the many layers its game play offers, particularly in the Squadron Commander campaign. Many years ago I had also played the original Microprose B-17 game but never spent enough time with it to do anything more than crashing during taxi and take-off. So, when I saw that The Mighty Eighth was available on GOG I picked it up and was determined to finally learn how to properly play a B-17 game and bomb a target. The the more I learnt and got into the game the more I became fascinated by the subject matter. This led me to reading quite a few books on the actual B-17, The Mighty Eighth's missions and the crews, and the respect I gained from that is also a driving factor in why I want to finish this video series. If it attracts just a few people to the game and to learn more about the subject then it will have been worth it.
That said, it is such a fine game and one that holds up very well even after all of these years. It just deserves to be played

The eleventh video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I focus on Quickstart Mission #2: Attack of the Axis. In this mission we use the gun stations of our B-17 to defend against a vicious attack by enemy fighters including Bf 109s, FW 190s and the jet propelled Me 262s.
Sorry for the delay in getting this video published. My recording software took a flaky and I was left with a video that had lots of dropped frames and audio out of sync. Took me a while to edit it into something presentable.

I hope my videos will be useful to you getting back up to speed with the game. I think that the game is amazing considering when it was released and unfortunately has never been refreshed since. Nevertheless, I'm just glad that it still works under Windows 10 and really hasn't dated too much.
I have absolutely no objection to you posting your videos. All I would ask is that you create a new thread for them as I really want to keep this thread dedicated to my tutorial videos.

The twelfth video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I focus on Quickstart Mission #3: Where are the Little Friends? In this mission we use the gun stations of our B-17 to defend against a vicious attack by enemy fighters including Bf 109s, FW 190s and the jet propelled Me 262s. However, this time there are no "little friends" to help us out.
There are some very impressive fighter explosions in this video.
Again, sorry for the delay in getting this video published. I have been having further issues with dropped frames and audio out of sync in my recordings. I have concluded that it is time to do some upgrades to my 6 year old PC. I'll be doing this in stages starting with a new GTX 1070 video card. I'm switching from AMD to Nvidia in the hope that I'll be able to get reliable recordings at 1440p60 with the Nvidia GPU hardware encoding.

The fourteenth video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I focus on Quickstart Mission #4: Opportunity for the Axis?. This mission places you in a Bf109 attacking a squadron of B-17s with no "Little Friends" helping them out. Can you succeed - I know I can't?
I need some help with this one. Can anyone beat this mission? Can you give me some tips on how to improve my fighter skills?

Still going strong there Ikrananka! It's a pity you're not a flight-simmer at heart,I'd love to see you tackle something a little more modern, such as DCS or BoS/BoM. Your teaching style is easy to understand.

I'm definitely still going but maybe not as strong as before. I must admit to feeling like I'm running out of steam. That said, I'm determined to finish what I started.
Having been playing around with the fighters in this game I must say that I have been very disappointed with the physics modelling with regard to handling and response. It just seems to be wonky, unrealistic and necessarily difficult as a consequence. However, I have started to become fascinated by the fighters themselves and so may well move on and explore them in more modern flight sims. But got to finish the B-17 series first......

[Re: ikrananka]
At long last I'm back!!!! Sorry for the long delay, it's been over a month since I published my last video.
The fifteenth video in this series is now live on YouTube. This video is the second of six Fighter Schools, aimed at teaching you the basics of each fighter aircraft in the game. In this video I cover the P-47 Thunderbolt, affectionately known as the Mighty "Jug".
I feel I owe you a little explanation of the delay, which shouldn't happen again, in getting this video published.
It started off with me deciding to upgrade my PC which meant that I spent a lot of time doing research on the latest PC components, selecting those I wanted, buying, installing and testing them. I had to reinstall Windows and my many programs around five times before I finally got a stable system which took far too many days to do. At long last it all came together and I now have a much faster PC than I did before. This will hopefully mean that the issues I was getting of dropped frames and out of sync audio in my videos will be far less likely.
I then had a load of research on the P-47 to do as well as a lot of testing of this fighter in the game. I kept discovering issues and a few bugs in the game with the P-47 and also found that I was useless at landing it. While I finally managed to edit this video down from 1h 45m to 1h 17m, there were around 5 hours of other wasted footage due to errors and mistakes I kept making. As I only get an opportunity to record in peace and quiet an hour or two a day it took me nearly two weeks to finally get this video completed. I can now only hope that it meets your expectations and I very much hope that it is useful. Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the videos ikrananka, I'm enjoying them you mentioned something about mods, did you make that video yet?
I got this game the day it came out in the UK, I remember hugely enjoying the Amiga version of the first B-17 game. The new version didn't disappoint me. In fact I still have the original game installed on my current PC, I remember an issue about engine management with patch 2 so I patch only with the first patch. I don't remember the details, only the fact
The other game I have similar to this installed is Silent Hunter 3. I play it in german, because I really ike the movie Das Boot and it's a pretty good representation of it, especially when you crank the realism and disable the external views etc
The B-17 has always been my favourite aircraft.

No, I haven't made the mods video yet. If you look in the description box under my latest video I have the latest playlist for the entire series. Mods are coming but right at the end.
I too played the original B-17 game but on the PC. The graphics on the PC were pretty awful and I could never seem to even takeoff, but I enjoyed trying.
Great - so you have the original retail version installed on your PC. Can you tell me if music plays when you're in the offices. I've heard this mentioned a few times but the Steam and GOG versions definitely don't have music playing there. With regard to engine management, unfortunately the Steam and GOG versions already include Patch 2 and I don't think there's a way to revert these versions back to Patch 1 only. Shame you don't remember the details but I have come to the conclusion that engine management in the game is far too buggy to be used. I only ever play the game now with the General Difficulty setting at Medium so that damage due to engine mismanagement is not modeled. There are too many examples of engines shutting down prematurely, or for no apparent reason, when engine management is active.
I'll have to check out Silent Hunter 3. I too love Das Boot, with German audio, although I prefer the mini-series which the movie was edited down from. It really is superb!!! Although I couldn't get to grips with the movie version with the English voice overs - it just didn't seem right.

I think the version I have back home on DVD is the movie made from all the episodes, making it about the longest movie I own I think. Something like 5 or 6 hours.

No music for me
Interesting - thanks for letting me know.

It has now been confirmed that if you have an original CD in your disc drive when you play the game then music does indeed play during the ground based parts of the game. I made a video of this that includes all of the music on the CD. You can check it our here.

The 20th video in this series is now live on YouTube. This video is the fifth of six Fighter Schools aimed at teaching you the basics of each fighter aircraft in the game. In this video I cover the Me 262, nicknamed the Schwalbe or Swallow, the first ever operational jet fighter of WWII.

Now all of the fighter schools are complete, I will be getting back to the B-17 in my next video.

The 23rd video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I show you how to manually start the B-17s engines when starting a mission. Two different procedures are presented depending upon if you have the game's General Difficulty setting set to Low/Medium or if you have it set to High.

The 24th video in this series is now live on YouTube. In this video I cover B-17 Engine Management analysing the only official source of information on this feature as well as presenting a workaround to a major bug. There is no silver bullet to effective engine management. You must spend time learning how to manage engine temperatures under all circumstance and to practice, practice, practice!!!
