I really admire someone who can think big about something good, and then make concrete progress in that direction As do I. There are precious few left in the world

Hey, I'm one of em. Thought about eating bar food for lunch and dammit that's probably what I'll do today.

Of course, he won't fly on it. There is no evidence to support that supposition, in fact he has stated his intention is to die on Mars.

He's 45 years old, if he lives an average life span he has 30+ years to go before dying on Mars.
His not being first on Mars has zero bearing on anything, IMO.

Elon Musk sounds like such a cool name for a Jedi! or a cologne.

The interesting part isn't the plans, but the progress. Already have VTOL stuff progressing, engines built, fuel tanks built, etc. The colony ships aren't just some hooplah plans on paper.
I really regret not being around and able to see a Saturn V launch. I hope to see one of these instead.

What puzzles me is that there is no mention of planning whatsoever for the activity on the surface of the planet. Presumably there must be some planning for the fuel generating facility, but that's a tiny part of the challenge. He's talking almost immediate settlement, and that means providing local dependable air, water, heat and food. And I just read that martian soil contains a perchlorates, which are somewhat toxic. There are a lot of pretty significant components to devise, integrate, and optimize for even a basic outpost; but Elon seems to be mainly focussed on providing a vehicle.
This is where the analogy with the railroad opening up the west, or ships delivering colonists to the New World, breaks down. It's not enough to arrive with a few bags of seed grain and an axe. It's a huge and rather inspiring challenge to work out how to bootstrap a complete civilization from scratch with a minimum of supplies from the home planet, but I don't see evidence of much progress toward that. So much of what we take for granted here is based on a huge pyramid of complex interdependent industries. How do you make do without that, when you are trying to make sure you can breathe and eat and not freeze?
