Back in January I upgraded from a pair of EVGA GTX 460 SC cards in SLI to a single 4 gig EVGA GTX 970 SSC and have been very, very pleased with the performance. So when another brand new, still in the sealed retail box, exact same part number as the one I have, 970 SSC popped up on eBay last week for $220 US dollars with free shipping - well - it was a no-brainer. It arrived yesterday and it is just as it was described in the listing, though for the life of me I don't know why it was being offered at such a low price. I am now waiting for the EVGA Pro HB SLI Bridge that I also ordered to arrive so that I can see what a pair of these cards will do in my flying rig. While I know they won't perform quite as well as a single GTX 980 Ti, and nowhere near what a new 1080 will do, it's hard to beat the bargain price.

Yes Lou, I have heard pros and cons about SLI in WOFF so I am very interested in your final analysis!

An update for those interested. I returned home last night from the events at Dayton to find that the SLI bridge I'd ordered had arrived, (and a very hi-tech looking thing it is too). So this morning after my initial intake of coffee I installed the second GTX 970 SSC card. As I already had excellent performance in WOFF with a single card I was not expecting any earth-shaking differences, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that the one annoying anomaly I had been experiencing hit-and-miss, that of cloud and object "popping" at the screen edges when looking around, was now gone completely. Even with a lot of activity in the air and on the ground I can now look about as quickly as I please and everything stays where it should. No more disappearing and reappearing of clouds and/or ground objects and their related shadows along the edges of the screen. Very nice!

Lou thanks for the update, one thing, are the blue triangles on the sceen edges also gone. Thanks for asking Dutch. I also was going to ask.

Yes dutch and Robert, they are gone. Though to be fair I seldom saw them with the rig I have, even before the second card. One other item I did just notice: the ground objects and their related shadows now seem to stay in place regardless of how far away I fly from them. The only exception to this I've found so far are the trees at the aerodromes, they still disappear from view earlier than they should, but they do stay in place much farther out than they did with the single card.

. Interesting find Lou. Congratulations on scoring an excellent SLI setup and getting rid of cloud popping. No intention of raining on your parade because I hope you have indeed solved the issue, but I thought I had solved it on a number of occasions only to have it "pop" back up again later under different weather conditions. A real head scratcher! Please keep an eye on it and let me know if cloud popping is indeed gone through many various weather types. I would be interested to see your settings if this proves to be true and will certainly buy you the proverbial drink on the house. Even with WOFF Ultimate Edition betas new shaders and a GTX 1080, I'm still having the issue! /sigh The good news - the new Ultimate Edition beta shaders provide a nice FPS boost both around airfields and even over the front. I can now do 8x time compression (at least during 1917, haven't tried 1918 yet) with max settings and still run between 30 and 60 FPS the entire time. UE seems like it will offer a nice performance boost for GPUs across the spectrum. Kudos to AnKor for that.

Ok to be sure on this, UE, brings only a better performance to an GPU and NOT to the CPU. UE beta shaders currently bring better performance to FPS. If it does it through better GPU or CPU handling, I could not say for certain, though my guess is that it's the GPU that benefits most from it. AnKor would probably be the best person to address the question. Of course beta is not finalized, so we need to actually wait and see what the finalized version brings. In the meantime, beta at least looks very good on FPS over previous versions of WOFF.

Actually what AnKor's shaders do is shift the video load from the CPU to the GPU, so it helps everything. The original CFS3/WOFF1 DX8 had most video load on the CPU, it was not till AnKor shifted the video load from the CPU to the GPU with his DX9 shaders did WOFF2 & WOFF3 FPS really start to rise to the level of modern games. It sounds like AnKor has performed even more of his "magic" in WOFF UE so that we can get even better FPS playing.

I believe new beta shaders are an improvement of both CPU and GPU load. Probably even more for CPU. I managed to resolve one old issue - missing shadows from "out of view" parts - which bothered me since I started working on WOFF shadows more than 2.5 years ago. This breakthrough allowed me to completely replace stock cfs3 shadows.
This freed up noticeable amount GPU memory consumed for those shadows, saved some GPU work spent on drawing them and most importantly saved CPU cycles spent by single-core cfs3 engine on preparing data for them.
The replacement doesn't come for free of course, but net effect is apparently very positive.

I don't know It is something odd in cfs3 engine. I personally don't see this issue often, but it is noticeable in some videos.

AnKor, your work with the shaders and shadows in WOFF has resulted in the single greatest visual improvement to the entire sim, hands down. Please, keep doing that voodoo that you do so well.
Oh, and so far the cloud popping is still MIA.

. That's some pretty fantastic news. Now I just need to dissect the mystery of what about adding the second card caused the cloud popping to stop. I'd rather not have to buy a second GTX 1080. lol

Congrats, and Fantatastic news Lou! I'd always wondered about the popping clouds and just consigned it as something that couldn't be tackled without access to the core source code. Now to just save the money and plan a new setup over my morning joe Cheers! -Jenks

Well, it's been five days and about 50 sorties, missions, and test flights of various types and at different periods of the war and still no cloud popping or disappearing shadows at extended distances. Not sure how much of this is attributable to the second card and how much is because of AnKor's shaders in the UE beta, but I'm very happy about it regardless.
