Okay, it's free but the DLC adds up to $104 thus far. That's okay, but what is SimHQ's evaluation? I always prefer SimHQ's judgement over internet magazines.

Keep an eye on Dreadnaught too, it's the same type of game but a bigger production and likely to be better. This one is free though.
I played it last year in early access and really enjoyed it. I only quit because the number of players dwindled down at the time. They were still putting out ships and the game mode was less refined, but it was fun. Since then I know they've added quite a bit. It's a good team game, much like a balanced fps with various roles. Different ships have different types of weapons/ranges, special abilities according to their role etc. Sniper, a carrier, medic/repair ship, short range brawler, medium range, defense tanks for the team etc. Most weapons are unique to the ship, but most also have missiles. It's more complex than rock/paper/scissors, but all ships have others they're stronger against and some they're weaker against. A good team will win every time over a bunch of individuals playing on their own. It WILL be frustrating while you learn your ship's strengths and weaknesses and how to best use it. You need to be ready with all of the ship's abilities when evenly matched and hit first.
I bought into the founders package, but it wasn't necessary. You build up points to progressively unlock different ships from the different manufacturers. You also unlock types of weapons or skills on those ships, but they're mainly just different, not better, weapons. More range is a trade off for damage inflicted, things like that. It's not a trump card. I wouldn't call it pay to win either since you can (at least at the time, not sure now) get everything just by playing and didn't have to shell out money. Even the hero ships that I got are mainly just different skins for the regular ships, or equal in usefulness.
The game type. Picture a clock face.
There is a team base at the 12:00 position, another at 6:00, these are your spawns and you must defend your station from the other team. There are fields of battle at 9:00 and 6:00 that each have 4 capture points on them. In the center of the clock is a neutral base that you can capture every couple of minutes for a team boost.
You can't get to the enemy base unless you get the capture point on the far end of the battlefield (their "gateway" point). You can capture as many other points on these battlefields as you want to turn them into warp points (shortcuts) and to build up resources faster. Any point you have captured you can warp to. Warping is the only way to get from a station or battlefield to another. You'll pick it up. The game is 3 dimensional, but the maps aren't exactly huge. I think there's more than one map now, but I'm not sure. Possibly more game types? It's worth giving it a shot, but I don't think you need to spend money on it just for the shortcut unless you really get into it and want to build up your points faster to buy ships and weapons faster.
This is a crappy video I made. The sound had cut out in the first part showing the carrier, but it's there after that section. I think I edited out the maps. This is from over a year ago, so it's developed a good bit since then. (before the rounds actually starts, everyone just shoots at each other for no reason, I'm not actually team killing)
