Update on progress:
Whoopi!!!!
What does it mean?..
This practically means EAW works on Linux!!
Also possibly other Unix, Bsd variants like FreeBSD, and Mac with Wine (and a few other tools - info coming later)I figured out the "KeyLIst.str" not found error when using EAW in Wine / Linux.
as well as remapabl.str and some other issues.
It a Linux or Wine issue due to it being case sensitive for files, AFAIK (or else not finding them.)
Anyway I solved it by doing this:
(Note; if your new to Linux Mint 18 Mate and or Wine;
you have to 'install' Wine from Your "Software Manager"
get to it by Mint Menu (similar to old Windows Start Menu), Software Manager,
(then use have to enter your Superuser password to authenticate to open the Software Manager)
then "Featured" programs, "Wine" then "Install")
get CDFRW.exe tool from;
WINGS OVER BYTOM, ADD-ONS, cdftools.zipusing CDFRW.exe extract from TEXT_ENG.CDF 2 files:
KEYLIST.STR
REMAPABL.STR
now rename them;
KeyList.str
remapabl.str
Now place the files in EAW folder;
(an EAW folder in Wine's virtual drive C - you make it containing the files you extracted from the 129 download link.
within there there place your EAW folder in Program Files (x86) for example)
(browse first via Wine - see below - to 'find your folder - to place set from Mint's 'File Browser' (Caja program)
(Not Wine's Browse C: virtual drive browser)
to change your File Broswer settings to see all hidden files use "View" from Caja File Browser main window menu (similar to old Windows Explorer)
checkmark "Show Hidden Files" then browse with Caja File Browser your home directory or wherever Wine installed the virtual pointer folder ( .wine ) when you set up Wine.
The point here is with Linux Mint and Wine, the Wine ' "Browse C: Drive"
browse your virtual C: drive ' program is different from
the Linux Mint file manipulation program you use -
in this case the default Caja File Browser that comes already installed with Linux Mint 18 Mate edition.
As example mine is at:
/home/myusername/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/EAW129 Basic
That's it.
To launch EAW:
Browse with Wine's "Browse C: Drive" link from the Linux Mint desktop;
find via menu, applications, Wine, "Browse C: Drive" browse your virtual C: drive program and select the eaw.exe then "Open With" > "Wine Windows Program Loader"

Also I sucessfully tried the 1.29 download posted at mediafire applied the same fix. It works. The game works on Linux Mint 18 Mate edition with Wine 1.6.2.
steps:
downloaded and tried mediafire file soemoen posted here:
1.29 Basic download
(complete url for download):

in Mint, extracted the EAW129 Basic.exe to a folder; 129 Basic
Altered the eaw.ini for my Wine on my laptop;
[GRAPHICS]
Width=800
Height=600
TestDrawPrimitive=0
DisplayDevice=1
(although my desktop my Mint resolution is actually 1366 x 768)
probably there is an adjustment in Wine for its 'virtual desktop' I haven't reset yet - but anyway it works.
I'll adjust the desktop later, this was just a test.
then since using a keyboard not joystick for the test I simple copied the entire remappable keys section from my webpage:
replaicing the remappable keys section from the eaw.ini from the download 129 Basic.
Voila! it works.
Instant and Single mission flown succesfully.
Everything works as far as I quickly tested.
Including the target selection menu (from single mission) and inflight map
Now I just simply have to get my joystick hooked up, etc.
Will update my website and appdata at Winehq soon.
Note that this isn't a full readme of what to do to seup EAW on Wine. There are some details I will make available in a How To soon"See posts in my signature in the meantime.
Also I have other info coming so stay tuned.

No flames please.
They will fail anyway because this info will soon be posted off the forum and spread to the Linux OS etc. world..!
