At 7:40AM the phone rings waking me up and this young sounding foreign lady on the other end saying she is from Microsoft/Windows. She says there has been a lot of internet traffic going thru my computer. So I get up and take the computer off Standby. Pick up the phone in that room and ask her where she is calling from > Microsoft in Marblehead Ohio (yes there is such a place as I checked). She asks me to press the Ctrl and Window keys on the keyboard and what I see on the screen. Say nothing on the screen as I didn't press the keys. She asks me again to press the keys - no way. In the mean time I'm checking the phone area code - 626 which is California. I say to her Marblehead is a dinky little town and her area code is Cali. She hangs up. Googled the phone number 626-963-6356, Flagged as Scam Or Fraud (626) 963-6356 Yvette C Medina Peerless Network VoIP Azusa, Ca Seems Peerless Network VoIP makes a lot of scam calls.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

There is a lot of it about, apparently. There´s loads of youtube vids about it. Scamming the scammers Ctrl+WIndows key? doesn´t do anything, as far as I can tell.

Ctrl + Windows? That does nuthin'. I guess if nothing happens, it means the hackers have control of your computer. The other day, somebody at work got a popup that said "Warning: Do not shut down this computer. It has been hacked, call Microsoft at XXX-XXX-XXXX" He was real worried and asked me what to do. I said, "turn off the computer and stop looking at porn at work." (Ok, I did go back and run a few scans. It was fine.)

Airdrop01...its funny that I posed your scenario to my wife and she responded as your wife did.
I wonder how crowded our jails would be if not for our wives.

I Like it when I get those calls on the weekend, because I do the "Press these keys" Procedure within a Virtual machine, all the meanwhile Logging their IP and going back into their system.
These Scammers dont realize, call the wrong person and their screwed.
That last guy to call with almost word for word the same dialog as your call, called from the same area code but different number,
I Easily back traced his system he was on from my Computer, while he was all happy because he was getting access to a stripped virtual machine image connected through a proxy.
I could have easily owned their entire network,
Instead I Changed his wall paper to a "pNwed" Wallpaper on his machine and the rest on the network, Logged onto a few questionable websites from their IP just to get the attention of law enforcement, logged into their router, blocked my IP Range, told the router to reset to apply settings, disconnected, and listened to him claim he was having a connection problem to try pressing the key combo again.
He was completely oblivious to the fact that I was all over his network, without having a single password to remote connect to their network and each computer on their network, and their router was still using the listed default user/pass listed on the internet.

No doubt. That is pretty funny. They keep us on the path to heaven (as best as they can).

For over 20 years now I've practically begged my wife to allow me to use one of those air horns on these folks. She keeps telling me she's saving my soul and just hang up as my option isn't Christian. Pffft! You're handling it all wrong. Just tell her you are simulating a shofar with the air horn! You're just trying to save the caller's soul! If that fails to convince her, just remember that it's easier to get forgiveness than permission. Thing is, she can live with all the guns, cigars, etc. in the house. If she sees one of those air horns, she'd kick my butt. No way I'm doing it!! I'd be this guy when I came to:

What would you think they would do?
Fire a cap gun several times, make a sound like falling and then moan like you had been shot.

They usually want you to goto a website disguised as a MS one and install something that enables a remote connection for them.
They then either pack up you User/My Docs folders (pix, video, docs everything) on the DL and try to extort you with it, or they use that program to hold system hostage until you pay for the "Virus Removal" via Money Card or something of the like.
I Let him snoop around a VM Machine, the only Pics and vids he saw were welcome to windows crap. I watched him "pretend" to install a virus scanner, all the while snooping his entire network, after all, He opened the door, so I'm just treating it as a 2 way street.
My family thinks the leading actor on Mr. Robot was based off me... :p

SkateZilla you are my hero! I wish I knew enough to do what you did. The best I've been able to muster is to pretend to go along with them, but never turn my computer on. I ask them tons of idiotic questions and don't know how to do anything. Usually they wish me a good night and hang up.

SkateZilla, you a scary dood. I only use my powers for good. I can verify Skate does only 'good', he helped me to assemble my current gaming box. And I love the way I have a little box where I just enter an IP address, and can see the desktop of that computer. Is that the way everyone's computer works?....Or just with the ASUS board, like this one?
