Does anyone here have any experience with Strike Fighters 2 Korean War? I've had an early jets "itch" for a long time and I see there's (I presume) a mod for SF2 that you fly the F86 Sabre and maybe MIG 15. Is it any good? If someone's spent any time flying it, can you give me your impressions please? Thank you.
I played it several years ago when it first came out and it was good then (especially when you really do not have many other choices if you want to play in that era).
CPU = i9 11900K GPU = RTX 3080 Ti Monitor = ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX 2160p G-sync
hmmm. It's better than all of the alternatives that don't really exist. LOL I guess that sums it up quite nicely. Do you know if their are any mods that improve upon it at all?
You can get the Wings over Korea mod here http://combatace.com/files/file/15221-wings-over-korea-1-of-3/ I believe Korean War is an older mod, Wings over Korea is more recent and adds many aircraft to fly and tweaks to the original Korean War mod. I only have little time into it, but what I saw was excellent.
I recently installed IL2-1946 and the SAS World at War module but have not had any real stick time. But... you want to talk about patches... ha you thought WOFF was bad... install the C.U.P. mod requires dedication.

Oh yes. Always like sub sims even back in my C64/Amiga says. What was that Microprose title? Silent Service? That's what really got me into the sub simulations...besides all those B&W movies as a kid.
Anyway I got a whole lot of hours into SH3. In fact I just reinstalled it before I did a clean HD wipe my last W10 install months ago. Gotta find the time to get both Silent Hunters, SF: Vietnam, and Il2 reinstalled again.
If you are looking for a game that allows you to fly the early jets, and can live with the graphics of an older game, how about trying Mig Alley. This was produced by the same company that gave us Flying Corps, namely Rowan Software. Below is a link to a recent review of this old game.
Rugyfan, I fully admit I'm a bit of a graphics ho. I was hoping for something that was at least DX9 but it's good to know that at least there's more than 1 game that's been made. Sabre Ace is from 1997 so that's a bit too dated for me as well.
The only place I found Strike Eagles 2 for sale is on the Thirdwire website and they still want $29.95 for each installment of the sim and evidently you need like 5 different expansions in order to run the Wings Over Korea mod. That seems wildly out of whack for when it first became available. Nothing on Steam or Gold Old Games. Unless somebody knows where I can get it cheaper, I'm probably out of luck.
$29.95? I don't think that price has dropped a bit since I bought SF2: Vietnam when it first came out. Years ago. 2010? Had WOV (basically SF1: Vietnam) prior.
Well based on the subject matter, gameplay, graphics, and modability ("realism" mods and the huge Vietnam war mod) I would snap it up in a second at that price again if I had too.
It's not the $29.95 I'm worried about. It's that you have to buy nearly ALL of the expansions at $29.95 each be able to get the mod. I'm not sure it's worth over $100. Especially if there's any chance at all OBD might someday have an early war jet sim. I'll have to think about this one.
SF2:WOK Requirements: SF2 Israel, SF2 Vietnam, SF2 Europe, July 2012 patch level or above, 6GB of HDD space.
Recommended but not necessary: SF2 Expansion Pack 1, SF2 Expansion Pack 2, SF2 North Atlantic. (See install instructions step 4.)
Ah. Didn't realize the Korean War mod was such an, to quote the great Hellshade, installment ho. Yes indeed I really enjoy SF2: Vietnam. Of course it helps to have a strong interest in the subject (which I do) and it's very well done. And the mods are truly great - especially the gimongus Vietnam mod. Basically adds or changes about everything making it that much better. Plus there are some great audio mods like real AA radio stuff from the war, rescue beeper sounds replacing the "I'm hit" sounds, aircraft, skins, terrain...I could go on and on.
It very much reminds me of Vietnam WOFF which may explain some of my attachment...right down to the file structure.
I wound up ponying up for the whole shebang a couple years ago for the Pacific War mods, but also have the VN updates. It's a lot of fun and well done considering its age.
It's unfortunate that TK never grouped or discounted his packages. I think people would buy them in a second if he did.
Indeed...especially at this late date. Reportedly he is out of PC games and is making "flight sims" for smart phones now.
That appears to be exactly what they have done. Evidently the last 2 PC games didn't sell well enough and so they switched to smart phone games. Far larger audience and probably far less demanding to program for.
Yes, unfortunately TK never put together an ultimate collection or really discounted the individual titles at all, which is a shame (cuz $50 for the whole series in a package would be a good offering and probably generate a lot more sales at this point).
And yes, unfortunately, most of the major mods were done in the heyday of the series and assumed that the users had purchased most or all of the previous titles (borrowing various items from each). So, ya, it is going to cost you - the bad news. The good news is that there are quite a huge number of add-ons/mods and some very good major mods for the series (Korea, Operation Tainted Cigar (Cuban missile crisis what-if), Vietnam Enhanced, and Nato Fighters 5 (can choose a number of different eras in this one from 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's for fiction European conflict) being highlights). So there is quite a lot of additional add-on value if you eventually decided to take this plunge (be it an overly expense one tho).
Install requirements are indeed unavoidable because aircraft like mustang, meteor, Mig-15, skyraider etc are in them (there are 3rd party free mods for them, but it's still different), also the terrain. TK's got to put his old stuff on sale someday.
okie exiting and gonna go fly a Sopwith Camel kite. <--- mostly wanted to say this
The only issue I ever had and still have with modding a game is what it takes to make it all work. WOFF is an example of what I wish could be done with a lot of Sim mods, a couple of guys get together and package the whole thing for one price and just make it one install that's proven to work when it's done.
I'd love to download and install all of this, but as past experience will dictate, it'll be a rough ride and I'm sure won't look or play as good as that video.
Sucks that the PC technology was never as good as it is today when the Sim niche was red hot. Wow, would Sims look insanely good.
Just my 2p.

I just did IL2-1946 with the new BAT (CUP replacement) mod and it's much easier to install than CUP was. I always give props to the tremendous work of the modders but having played it a few days, I don't personally feel it is a very polished experience. I certainly respect that others might feel different, but it just feels very ad-hoc to me. It has made me anticipate WOTR that much more. The Korean jets were cool. The WWII Pacific is cool, but dated graphics and no in depth campaign felt hollow to me, personally.
I'm going to try upping the glossy factor in WOFF UE from 5 to something higher to see if it makes the wings a little shiny, like there was wing fabric dope on them. I remember reading somewhere that the experienced pilots would tell the younger ones in WWI not to rock their wings too much because the glint of sunlight off the wings could give away their position.
