Okay, so I just got back from a backpacking trip...where I pack everything in and out. Weight is a big deal considering I drink about 3-4L of water a day. Last time I packed 12 L to this spot and that's not fun. As I say, this spot doesn't have much water where I went so I've got to lug a lot of that anyway too. Well because of that I'm not carrying water for cooking. So in those cases I use MREs.
Well, they changed the packing so instead of the entrees and side (what you heat) coming in a box, they are just in their foil bag. When you heat them with the heater, they get at best luke warm now. Why? Because some idiot decided that the cardboard was waste, or more likely not "green," when in reality it was a friggin oven. Put the heater and food in the box, and it was steaming hot in 5 to 10. That's right, they still put cardboard in the bag with their stupid mandated govt "nutrition facts" (here's a clue, chemicals, fat, protein and sugar) just it is a card, not a box.
So, I guess I've got to find a new option. Any ideas besides packing my own cardboard box to reuse until it falls apart???
Maybe I need a "rock." Grrrrrrr. Rant off.

A rock or something.
Not having eaten any recent production MREs, all I can suggest is that maybe a different packager still includes the cardboard boxes. Or, maybe trees are still killed en mass for "civilian" MREs.

While I can't speak to modern MRE's (I left Big Army when we were still hunting for Meatballs in BBQ sauce and avoiding the Tuna With Noodles), my favorite Army instructions are still the ones with the GP medium tent. Little stick men performing the task and "talking" to each other. "You hold the tent post while I'll pull the rope."

Are you getting actual military MREs or the civilian equivalent?
The last mil MRE I ate was just over a year ago and it still had the cardboard box and the food heated up nicely.

You shouldnt be eating eco-friendly Military MREs! Its the MILITARY FFS! Even if they put a program in place 5 years back it takes time for that big a change to filter through because of the HUGE stockpile of m.. Doesnt it? Did you buy/borrow/"borrow" from a different source? Is it the Civvy equivalent to a real MRE? (EDIT: I see Weasel Keeper said it first, oops. Still a valid question though) Water: Youve made a rod for your own back. Sorry. Oven: Nothing that a roll of Aluminium foil cant solve (All the above written with a smile on my face. Ive been there )

These are from Meal Kit Supply. I but them in pretty small amounts, two cases at a time for our family backpacking trips. The ones made as recently as 2014 had the boxes. But the last of those is gone and so I just grabbed them from a new case for this trip. It looks like they were made in May of 15.
I am gonna call if I can find a number, or else email, the company today and see what I can find out. Before them, probably last around 2000, I used military ones, but they were honestly not as good (except they did at least have Tobasco and in each one which helped). I think I also got some back in the 90s from Sopacko.
This just totally seems like something someone thought was a good idea in an office somewhere without actually thinking..... "Hey, let's be green and cut out is box waste."
Oh well. Guess I'll have to adapt.. I'm old. I don't like doing that. The world has left me way way behind!

Some come with boxes, others don't. Just depends on who makes them. There are a couple of companies that make MREs, you can tell by the small changes in printing and such. You don't need a box, you put the food inside the heater with the water, Make sure the heater is on the bottom, prop it at a 60 degree angle and it will get hot. How do I know? I've ate more than I want to remember or admit. For 5 weeks in Africa, I ate them exclusively except for 2 meals and that is because we butchered a goat and a pig. The other time was for diplomatic reasons, I got invited to a meal with the Africans.

ROFLMAO!! (anyone else get it?) That's why I wrote it. Ha ha! Me and the wife had a good laugh over that the first time she had an MRE. Then she was surprised how tasty it actually was.

Then she was surprised how tasty it actually was. I tried a chicken & rice MRE once back during the 1990's. It was actually ok but the biggest problem was the lingering after-taste that lasted for quite a while. I'd imagine those MRE's have a crapload of preservatives in them.

It depends on the MRE and when it was made (I'm assuming 1990s MREs were much worse than today's). Some are the spawn of Satan.

Omelette. Yum? Ok no. Thank gawd they stopped with that one. No one ever wanted vegi burger. I had a huge supply of one of the better tasting IMO MRE's for quite sometime. Well until it caught on or everyone was sick of everything else. I liked that one with its funky shredded potato things. Was so easy to trade for it for months. Only problem was trying to trade for jalapeno squeeze cheese. The vegi patty with the snack bread, wheat, and that peppy weirdo cheese was like my favorite thing for sometime in MRE land.
