After building a new PC and upgrading to Win10, I was on the verge of throwing away my old XP machine when I saw this thread. I decided to try to get Longbow Gold running in 3DFX one last time, after trying unsuccessfully several years ago. While Flyboy's installation in DOSBox worked perfectly the graphics were a little dated.
I'm happy to say that Longbow Gold is running almost perfectly in XP in 3DFX mode. Here's what I did:
1) Installed nGlide 1.05 (from Zeus Software)
2) Installed Longbow Gold from the CD, to the default directory. Do not install DirectX (it will fail if you try to do so).
3) Do not install Patch 1.04
4) Manually install Direct X from the DirectX directory on the CD after applying Windows 95 compatibility.
5) Install GoldFX patch after setting compatibility to Windows 98.
6) I also fixed the memory allocation problem with a program called Gamefixer by using this batch command
GameFixer "C:\JANES\LBGOLD\lbwin.exe" -memoryfix TotalPhys=33554432
7) For good measure I installed a Windows Compatibility fix from Zeus Software(lbgold_patch.zip)
FWIW, gameplay is great in 1920 X 1080 resolution, with no crashes, and I can play all missions & campaigns (at least so far). I can't view videos, and I have the annoying mouse click bug, but those are pretty niggling problems.
After the holidays, I will do some more testing and write a more detailed installation guide. It might be possible to create a downloadable version for others to try.
My setup:
ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe Motherboard
4 MB DDR Memory
Windows XP SP3 32bit
ATI X1950XTX videocard with Catalyst 10.2 drivers
AMD FX-55 single core processor at 2.6 GHz
Your mileage will most likely vary.
