Quote:
Earth-Like Planet Found Orbiting the Nearest Star to the Sun

Astronomers just discovered the closest possible Earth-like planet outside our solar system. It orbits our closest neighboring star, Proxima Centauri. The planet is warm enough for liquid water, is almost certainly rocky and terrestrial, and could even have an atmosphere. At just 4.2 light years away, scientists are even wondering if this may be the closest home for life outside our solar system.

Is it called Trisolaris?
If so, we're in trouble...

Proxima B, think we are safe. Makes you wonder when they will send the first probes to investigate.

"May have an atmosphere" says it all. They know basically nothing about the planet except that it exists, its rough mass, and an approximate orbit. And Proxima Centauri would be a terrible sun to live under.

Yeah. We can't rule out that it may be habitable for life - fungi and bacteria, if they are resistant enough to nasty gamma ray bursts from a very dim, very faint red dwarf. And the planet must circle it very closely to remain in a "habitable zone" which says nothing but that the planet could range from anywhere between Antarctica as its warmest spot, to the middle of the Great Sahara as its coldest place. Yay.

This is a clickbait headline, NASA style - hyped up to a point where it's becoming factually misleading. All I can say is, Scientists, knock it off!

Actually if you read the entire article the radiation issues are mentioned, as well as the fact that the planet is probably tidally locked.

The video (not made by NASA AFAIK) IS a 99% speculative and hyperbolic however.

Avatar, you say?

I wanna be a water bender.

Has anyone noticed how these click-bait space articles have exploded in number since the shuttle program ended?

There is a progression, but it is not causation.

There have also been an explosion in click-bait non-space articles since the shuttle program ended.

Or you could just say "in the last 5 years". It has nothing to do with the shuttle.

It has everything to do with the state of websites trying to drive traffic in an increasingly crowded environment from increasingly ADD readers.

Yeah, that's definitely the major factor driving it.

Speaking of old school NASA click bait: This is excellent.

And these stupid headlines of organizations begging for attention are too.

Scully: Victim died of multiple stab wounds.
Mulder: *throws her a file* Ever heard of the knife alien?
