Years ago my barber in Jax., FL told me the time was fast approaching that keeping a flattop would be impossible. I thought about it when it came time for my next haircut. No more driving across town, waiting for the one guy who *usually* cut it perfectly (sometimes standing until a seat was available, sometimes waiting in the queue for *my* barber), spending $15.00 + tip (IIRC). What a PITA.
That day I gave myself a final haircut, trimmed it down with scissors as much as I could then shaved it off with my electric razor. Grew a goatee a few weeks later for character. Never been happier (never liked my hair anyway), at any time I can get completely spiffied up within an hour, and without ever needing another haircut.
Until very recent...I grew it out by not worrying about shaving at all. Finally couldn't take it anymore, my beard keep snagging on the material of my pillow, plus it itched like a mo-fo (although I haven't stopped showering ). What I didn't realize is just how bald I've actually become, I'd have that side-hair thing going if I didn't shave it!
It's back to normal now, feels nice and cool. Man, I love the feeling of having a clean shaved head!
I keep it very short now, especially compared to the mid-back length I had in my twenties. Luckily, no bald spots though there is plenty of gray, which is worse in the beard (which I why I keep the chin clean).
Actually have more now than I used to (WTF is the point of having it on your ear lobes now? I got through my 20s without it just fine...)
I keep it pretty short. I also shave daily, on some days twice (if going out at night for some special event).

Still have it, knock on wood. No changes to hair line. I keep it really short regardless though, it's just easier and more comfortable. I like to see skin through it all the way around. LOL Got tired of shaving so now I just use a trimmer once or twice a week, but not what I'd call a beard either.
Both of my brothers are going bald. I shaved my head a year or so ago to make sure I didnt have a wonky head shape in case I start going bald. I generally use clippers on my own head at the 1" mark every month or so.
I'll never look back that's for sure. My wife at the time forbid me to shave it but I did it anyway. She got used to it over time.
Must have saved a small fortune on haircuts over the years (always cut my own).No shampoo,no hair dryer,no more combs, love it.
My favorite thing about it, which I guess would apply to anyone who cuts their own hair, is that I don't have to worry about getting it cut before going to a function or something.

Yeah, I had the same problem with mine, but unlike you I didn't have the nads to go through with it. I wanted to shave it in my early 30's way before I needed to, ended up getting in a big fight about it (or several, we fought all the time about anything). By the time I shaved it in my late 30's, no one cared (I had much bigger problems than what my hair looked like).
It's really a non-issue and not something you have control over anyway, but I think you still have to 'own it.' As in, "I like it. If you don't like it, that's YOUR problem!" But again, I actually do like it for myself so I don't have to pretend to have a false confidence about it.
And like you said, they get use to it over time. They really do.

I get mine cut as close to the skin as it's possible to get with clippers every 2 weeks, it's usually about 1/4" long when I go back. The main reason I don't just shave it is I hate shaving as it is, adding my scalp to the mix is just too much.

Same as a lot.. I'm 67 hair started getting real thin around 50..So I got tired of paying 21$ for a hair cut with little hair ,,Shaved my head and a full beard and have kept it that way.

I have what I call the "Friar Tuck" effect. My hair thins out at the crown area of my head - it started over 20 years ago but it seemed to stall. So to this day it remains at the same level of thinness but has not progressed. And since I detest "comb overs" I chose to cut my hair short in a very utilitarian way without regard to style or fashion. I cannot afford Hair Club for Men, Rogaine, or similar solutions so instead I spend that money on Battle of Stalingrad and Battle of Moscow. You hear that Jason? I look ugly in hopes that you will soon enable skins in single player so I can fly historically correct planes on the German side. Damn I am desperate.
The issue is not p*ssy. The issue is monkey.

My whole reason to start with the clippers was a very bad comb-over I was sporting, and this was in my early 40's.I was egged on into doing it by a mate at work who was sporting a 'Max Wall' hair style. The deal was if he did it I had to,and if I refused he was probably going to pin me down and do it anyway
Even if there was a cure for baldness, and it was free I'd still keep what I've got (or not got).

Add me to the list of at-home hair cuts. My wife has cut mine for 20 years. I never found a pro that did it right anyway. She knows how I like it. Got tired of prices going up and bought a kit. Never looked back. At $20/cut, that's about $4800 saved, minus maybe 4-5 clipper kits at about $30 ea. The Wahl beard clipper has been a great move too. Screw shaving. It does accept their dual shaver head though.
I am 60 something, still got it, my wife gives me a haircut every year or two. All the males in my family went bald on top. I am a little thin there but I get the last laugh. So I just alternate between short and long/ beard and clean. Still hoping to get that job as an extra on "Vikings," I kinda look the part...

Still lurking about
I'm Italian and Irish. I have hair everywhere but where I need it. I have been referred to as "the missing link' a few times in my life. Some have said my chest hair might actually stop a low caliber bullet. LOL. Been spared the back hair though. Chemo has pretty much taken its toll on what was left up top. I say I would be too good looking with a full head of hair. I'd never get anything done.

I'm 54 and my hair is thinning on top but so far no grey. I've kept it cropped to no more than a 1/4" the last 20 years or so. Only time it was ever long enough to cover my ears or touch my collar was a brief period in the 70's.

RK, I have a whole selection of razors and heads, some similar to what you have pictured.
My hair grooming (sticking with head only )...
1. Norelco 3-blade rotary with pivoting heads for full head shave, reshaping goatee as needed.
2. Wahl trimmer with 1/8" guide for goatee and eyebrow trim. Guide off to trim above upper lip and under nose, then Norelco (using one of three blades) to get under lips and between eyebrows.
3. Nose hair trimmer to get inside nose and ears. I also pass my Norelco over ear surfaces to get any old-man ear hairs.
4. For a finishing touch I use a regular razor w/Barbasol to get under chin and around back of neck, for that manly hot water shaving feel and smell. Without that last part I wouldn't feel as if I've had a complete shave.
5. And finally, I hand my wife the Norelco to give my head a once over, in case I missed anything (which is very seldom).
++++++++++
No matter how old I get, I refuse to have those old-man bushy eyebrows and whacky long nose hairs, as well as long black top of ear hairs!

I kept my hair until my mid thirties, which was a sort of running joke in my family (on my Mom's side every man is bald before that and some of the women are pretty thin, too) on why I was waiting so long.
The funny thing is that it didn't recede or anything like that. In January I had a high-and-tight, and by September I was just taking a clipper set to my head, as there wasn't anything on top. Well, except for what could make a very credible Charlie Brown curl if I grew it out.
Since I knew I was going to be bald for as long as I could remember it didn't bother me in the least.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.
I'm 60 now, and have hair in more places than I want it, wife uses the clippers on me every few weeks and keeps it at about 30mm (1 1/4") I shave my own earlobes thank you very much, and wtf is the use of tufts growing on top of your ears????
Starting to go grey, my father had very light blond hair almost white but he started going grey when he was in his late 40s, by 60 he was pure white, his older brother didn't get grey hair until he was almost 80 and still had a good colour in his hair when he passed away at 88.

i'm on the other side of the spectrum, my hair is pretty wild and thick, but i take finasteride (propecia) to make sure it never gets thin (thought it was thinning in my mid 20's and started on it).
i spend about $200 a month on my hair in special straightening treatments and coloring.
seems like a PITA, and it is, but my hair is generally what attracts women to me that would normally be way out of my league, so i keep it in good shape. having rockstar type hair is not for everyone but if you wear it well, it pays you back in spades..!
