This to me is the difference between yesterday's questionable talent and today's questionable talent.
Every few weeks I spend the evening seeing an 80's cover band called "The Molly Ringwalds" (I have a thread somewhere, must have scrolled off into the sunset). They mix it up with Classic Rock, New Wave and Pop.
Last concert they announced from the stage that they voted to play this again (almost apologetically), that the guitarist (of all people) insisted...
You know what? Even in the worst flaming 80's tune, you can usually find *something* impressive! In this case, the bass player did a little showing off. Playing the song itself was impressive enough, but at the end I think he improvised a little and did a solo that would make Geddy Lee or Flea crack a smile!
I just don't see or hear anything like this in those Justin Bieber videos.
30 years from now, are hundreds of people (of all ages) going to pack a theater to hear covers of music being released today? I see it all the time, 60's/70's/80's music packing and rocking the house! Will 90's+ music have that kind of staying power, decades later? Maybe. I hope I'm still around to find out.
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, always remind me of Ambrosia's "Nice, Nice, Very Nice"...
========== Oh a whirling dervish And a dancing bear Or a Ginger Rogers and a Fred Astaire Or a teenage rocker Or the girls in France Yes, we all are partners in this cosmic dance ==========
