Mainly by train and the BritRail Pass, wonderful invention. Just flash it and you are on your way. Used the Underground (Oyster Card gets you everywhere) and in Peter Booths car. It takes a brave man to let a car here. Too old and just may go the wrong way on the roundabouts.

Spent today with Harry, Ron and Hermione...

John and Peter, they know the locomotive is a ringer...

Tomorrow, RAF Hendon...

So your in Hogwarts, oh mighty wiard of the virtual paint brush!

Anyway your Howarts engine, there are three full-size replicas of the locomotive as 5972 Hogwarts Castle are at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Universal Orlando Resort).

Two as part of the Hogwarts Express train ride and the other is a static exhibit in the Hogsmeade area, so next year try and get them too.

The real engine is GWR 4900 Class 5972 Olton Hall, and in 2015 the locomotive went on static display at The Harry Potter Museum within the Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, near Watford and will remain there in the museum until 2017, so you might have seen the real one! biggrin

Enjoy your reunion Tony.

John, it was the real thing we were at Watford. The Studio Tour is an amazing affair. It was jam packed and we spent almost 6 hours going through it. Left at 9AM returned at 8PM.

Hey Mike,

I only hit the curb twice! That bridge at Caerleon is ruddy narrow and I had never gone that way before, and Val's car is longer than mine. You're right though - our roads are not brilliant, particularly out in the country.

Not to worry Pete. Thank you for the personal touch.

Meanwhile at the RAF Museum at Hendon...

I took a few hundred photos today. The museum is an amazing place. I've got to go through my photos and post a few dozen more. But, that will wait until I get home. Leaving Friday so it will be next week for a better view of the tour. Unfortunately for me the Battle of Britain Hall is undergoing renovation and nearly all of the aircraft were disassembled.

Nice "Oxbox". It looks a lot better than I remember it, but last time I went must be nearly 30 years ago and I guess they have expanded the display, but it is a pity about the changes they have recently started to make. The BOB Hall used to be pretty good - Spit and Hurri Mk1, 109E, He111, Ju88 and CR42 as I recall. The IWM used to have a Spit and Hurri too, but again that was years ago and they might be at Duxford now. Did they still have a Hampden at Hendon or is that my memory failing?

Have a good day Thursday and a good flight back.

Pete

The Hampden Wreck your thinking of Peter, is away being restored at Cosford, to what condition, I'm not sure. There is a replica/restoration being built at East Kirby http://www.lincsaviation.co.uk/museum/the-brian-nicholls-hampden-restoration-project.htm, And there is a restored wreck, in Canada, which fell apart in a storm a few years ago.

Must have been thinking about the Wimpy though I gather that is in Cosford being restored at the moment. A real shame that we did not preserve more of out wartime aircraft, not to mention the many German ones we captured and tested. No Manchester and Stirling and the only Hampdens and Halifaxes are either recovered wrecks or total rebuilds in the case of the Halifax BIII. No Whitley either. As with the medal, Bomber Command were virtually ignored.

Between the wars we only have a few fighters.

Building replicas is all that's left. I can't imagine the Do17x raised from the channel sands, is going to be restorable. At best it will be patterns to make new bits.
