SE5 is an awesome fighter, which is an incredible thing for a flying windmill. biggrin

Joke apart, It's only recently that I have learned to appreciate the "anti-harmony" lines of RE8 and BE2.

I'm with Joe on this one. While the craftsmen at Kingston-on-Thames were the spiritual descendants of Grinling Gibbons and George Hepplewhite, it's also true that ex coal miners needed employment too, and it was nice that the Royal Aircraft Factory was able to put their skills to good use...

Can someone smart with history tell me the service dates for the Caudron G4 and how common or uncommon this plane was? Maybe if there was a particular area of the front that it mostly served in or was it all across the western front?

Roughly a third of the Escadrilles at the Front, from Alsace to Flanders, and from about August '15 to early 1917, when it began to be replaced by the G.6, though it didn't completely disappear until sometime later

Which is why this plane is such a fantastic addition to WOFF. Not a rarity flown by two people for a couple of times in the week preceding the Armistice, but a machine that saw extensive service everywhere on the Western Front in large numbers. smile

Sure looks fun having that gunner just about shoot you in the freaking face all the time!

The G6 A2 would be interesting. The pilot sat up front with a wooden cockpit shell that hinged down around the pilot, his Lewis Gun on the right. The observer/gunner was back behind the wings. Heavier than the G4 with the same motors, probably quick to stall. Larger fin was introduced on later examples. About 250 made.

However a Voisin or two (LA3 especially) are definitely more in order.

For those who wants to know a bit more about Caudron G IV in the Aéronautique Militaire, I have made, using Albin Denis excellent website, a (non-exhaustive) list of Escadrille that used the G.IV, with their main role, the period during which they used Caudrons, and their localisation at that time.

Awesome news. French two-seaters are needed so this is a great addition.
