I like how all the review sites assume this was supposed to be a new Xbox One, and draw into so many lil things, then bash it like it's not worth buying, Wonder if they'll do the same for PS4K
it's a Die Shrink, Unit Shrink, that uses updated standards for ports, which MS integrates the latest standards that weren't standard 3 years ago.
Much like how Xbox 360 Launch Mainboard used ANA Scalar Chips only (no HDMI, just YPrPb), then a year or so later, they released a unit w/ a mainboard update and a HANA Scalar Chip w/ HDMI Support, before integrating it into the South Bridge, the Launch Xbox 360 literally had 5 Named Mainboard revisions before the Xbox 360 S Launched w/ the combined CPU/GPU and HDMI Integrated into South Bridge,
The Xbox 360 S had 2 mainboard revisions before the Xbox 360E ( Xbox One Look-A-like version) took over production.
For the Xbox One S: -Kinect Port was removed because the Xbox One runs windows 10 kernel and drivers, they use Windows 10 Driver now for kinect, which means you can run it w/ the USB Adapter. -Kinect Port by itself took up significant space and PCB Runs, not to mention the dedicated controller chip on the inside, which is now gone as well as it's moved to the USB Interface.
-Internal Power Supply, I have mixed feelings about it, as w/ the 360s if PSU Failed, you shipped the PSU, now you have to ship the entire unit. While it's an Internal PSU, the Unit itself is actually self enclosed into it's own box, mounted to the inside mainboard tray, however it connects to the mainboard via 6 Pin Molex Connector, So it's easily swapped if it goes bad, however the warranty void if removed sticker prevents consumers from doing it theirselves.
-40% Size Reduction, Items are setup and oriented to maximize use of the space, it's crazy compact, The Xbox One Launch Console had a lot of empty space above the mainboard already, But not enough to make a 40% size reduction a simple task. Main Area is behind the Blu Ray Drive, where nothing sits but the PCB on the Bottom 4 mm of the space., As the right side is the APU Heatsink and Fan, and HDD Rack. So 25% of the Empty Space of the Launch Xbox One is Empty space behind the blu-ray drive.
The Xbox One S, Moves the HDD Rack and 2.5' HDD Behind the Blu Ray Drive, And then The PSU Unit has been moved inside behind the APU Heatsink Fan Combo. The mainboard is re-organized slightly w/ smaller APU, Smaller VRM Array, GDDR3 RAM Chips.
-Performance Changes: -The One S APU uses a smaller Manufacturing Process (likely 16nmFinFet, Compared to the 28NM in the Launch One, the Visible Difference in size is there), -The APU uses Updated Color, Scalar and VPU Profile (Allowing 1080p Content to be Upscalled to 4K, and 4K Decode of Video MP4-UVC Etc) -The One S also uses a New DisplayPort++ -> HDMI Re-timer Chip (6Gbps 4Kx2K@60Hz Certified, Will Also Work w/ Oculus Rift HMD) for HDMI 2.0a (vs 1.4 of Launch One) -The Power Supply/Draw is Likely Less Due to the Mainboard Condensing, Removing of Extra Stuff (Kinect II) -The BluRay Drive is an Updated Version of the Previous w/ UltraHD Capability -The APU's memory bank chips were switched from DDR3 to GDDR3, (this allows more work to be done and faster transfers of textures etc, system function impact is non-existant) -The Controllers were Updated, as well as the Radios for the Controllers, XBO-S now has Blutooth. -Most of the smaller controllers are the same or revisions or equal performance replacements of the XBO Launch Units
So While the Xbox one S HDD is SATA-III, the SATA Controller is still SATA-II, Meaning any External USB 3.0 Drive you are using is likely still faster.
Wrapping it all up, vs a Launch Xbox One: -On a 1080p TV, some Intense Graphical Scenes may run smoother due to a slightly overclocked GPU Block and GDDR3 Ram vs Launch XBO. -On a 4K TV, You can now Output at 4K 60Hz, w/ Menu UI at 4K, and Movies at 4K thru Supported Apps/BluRays/

I was thinking about trading mine in just to get a smaller unit, but I would lose money.
HDD Size and 4K aren't important for me as my unit is hocked to a 1080p TV, and I plan to move my user content (games etc) to new external drive when budget permits.
Right now I have no problem with deleting the game files, and just re-downloading on my days off before I play.
Halo MCC + Halo 5 took up 50+% of the Stock HDD by itself.
As for Xbox Sorpio, with the Cross buy program, I think I'll just use my PC/Windows 10 as much as possible.
