Ok, so I just got done watching "Battle of Leyte Gulf" on Battle 360 and now I want to fly a WWII Pacific Theater flight sim. I don't suppose there is such a sim that is any good.

The last one I really enjoyed was CFS2...all modded up of course.
The planes and cockpit have stood the test of time, the terrain not so much unless some work has been done in the last couple of years. Fired it up about 18 months ago.
Course I have always had a fascination for the Solomons/Rabaul campaign anyway.
Il2 has a Pacific campaign capability (reportedly) but I use it for my Eastern Front fix.

As a Part 2 (I really liked CFS2 which is why CFS3 was such a huge, and ugly, disappointment) a WOFF'er (Nibbio) was a big modder for CFS2 though I have not seen him around in a while. Still got about 1.5 GB of mods on CD's.

As I said the planes and cockpits are still very nice (much better then 3) but the terrain could use some serious help. If anyone is aware of a terrain mod please advise.

Another cool thing was it was essentially the combat version of...FS2000 IIRC? And it's weather and other mod items are useable in CFS2. One particularly cool thing was a real time weather mod. It would download the actual weather in a certain area of the world (in this case the Solomons) and the game would recreate it and change as time went on. That may not seem like a big deal now but 15 years ago I thought it was cool as heck.

Yep played the hell out of CFS2 - what I wouldn't give to see it get the WOFF touch.

EDIT: Just did a quick Google search nosing about and it looks like there is still quite an active modding community. Almost certainly the terrain has been spruced up by now. Have to check further!

I'll admit to not paying close attention but I thought IL2 lacked many assets (terrain, units, etc) to make a real campaign doable? Course it's been a while since I checked...just not enough hours in the day!

Hellshade,

You might consider the Pacific Theatre of Operations mods for CFS3. I think you can still download PTO Solomons and PTO Rising Sun from Sim Outhouse. Each is a separate installation, with a number of different campaigns. Plus there a number of single missions for these mods. The graphics quality is fairly low but they're enjoyable.

If you buy the IL2 1946 pack, it includes the entire series, which has the Pacific Fighters add-on which starts at Pearl Harbor and goes through the war... it's probably the easiest to jump in on. It's on GOG.com for ten bucks right now!

I am living with that itch since many years now, Hellshade.
I guess, on todays gaming standards a Pacific Theater sim would just be a HUGE task,
with having to bring all the important ships into it.

But I'd LOVE to see that one day...

Il2 1946 is quite well preserved.

Hmmm...I may have to take another look at Il2.
Clearly there has been some aircraft additions. Enough for a Solomons campaign?
We shall see.

There is a dynamic campaign generator that continues to be developed.

There are several good-looking mods - I wonder how hard they are to install...

Oh yea. Always used Lowengrin's (our own WOFF'er Elephant) DCG for both IL2 and CFS2.

There is always Red Baron over Pacific ... I mean Aces over Pacific, or Strike Commander over Pacific ... I mean Pacific Strike, or Their Finest Hour over Pacific ... I mean Battlehawks 1942.

Hmm, decided to pull out my IL2 1946 copy to give it a spin. For the cool mod pack, you actually have to downgrade it from version 4.13 to 4.10 (the file to do this is included in the GoG purchase) then you can upgrade it to version 4.12 and use this link
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,50919.0.html
to mod it way beyond stock. The visuals are much better and it seems like there are a bunch of new effects and features. Here's a video I made to demonstrate some of them and how much I need to practice winkngrin

Looks like I'll be playing for a while! Way to go, Hellshade!

Gee - they already had working rear mirrors in IL-2!

Rick, maybe you should think about joining the Navy - only 2 dimensions there!
(Well, there is a third one, but you'll only check it once... biggrin )

I have bought everything that the old Maddox team put out... the demo, the original game, forgotten battles, ace expansion pack, pacific fighters, IL2 1946 etc.

It is still on my hard drive, and I go back to it every now and then, and I still enjoy playing it smile

I didn't have an itch until I saw this thread posted. Just downloaded Il-2 and have been playing the Pacific theater all day. Not bad at all!

Any mod recommendations by the people that play it?
