Not sure. One problem I had is, I had my cd drive turned off and then it asked for a EAW Game CD. I turn the drive back on and it let me play with a CD.

Thanks Mark...Guess the simple solution would be just put the cd in and let it go at that..I just thought there was a way to do it..Been a long time since I ran straight up 1.2

I know you have to have all the files, a full installation to be present on the HD. Best to copy them over and make sure there not read only aswell. I have a document help guide on my site to manually install the game.

It also could be that you ran the game before you applied the noCD exe and ini setting...

Hope it works out, its a pain to use the CD I think.

Got it running with windower, otherwise i get the 7217,,I thought I had it running before,,You may be right I copied everything over,,applied the patch ran it and the cd was still in the drive ,,Think I'll try copy ,,patch ,,edit the ini,,Using the cd isn't a problem it's always next to the machine,,But I'll mess around and see what works. But first I'm heading for your site...

No tried not running it after patching edited the ini then took out the cd still hollers for it ..So I'll leave it in...Don't use the cd drive a lot ..

If you get the 7217 error in Win7, perhaps the registry settings done by the OS has been duplicated in the registry or incorrectly. (I distinctly remember v1.2 running fine on Win7 without a wrapper, just needs a reg fix for the odd colored menus.)
You can clear those by using the same install document I wrote as it has info on the Reg and Win7 entries.

There maybe more entry's than I have listed in the document, search for eaw.exe in regedit and see if you can remove those entry's. Just make sure the entry's are truly for European Air War the game as they follow the path to the eaw.exe of European Air War by Microprose. Or the folder path you 'installed' the game in.

Should take about ten mins to find them all. This should solve the nocd problem too, as long as u have the nocd in place at the time of running the game after clearing the Registry of those eaw.exe entry's.

Good Luck, if you so choose to follow these steps.

I have several versions of the no cd patch. One includes the following readme:

Quote:

1. Install EAW (Full install).
2. Apply EAW patch version 1.2.
3. Run EAW once & exit
4. Copy eaw.exe to your EAW dir
5. Add/replace the following in your EAW.INI file...

[Miscellaneous]
Debug Flags=0
Debug Path=.\

6. Put your CD in a safe place.
8. To save HD space you can replace movies.cdf with the supplied version (but you will get odd neon effects if you later forget and go into that section of the game).
9. Enjoy quicker load times, and no fooling about with the CD.

Note it requires the patched exe included in the dl.

This is the fix that happens if you want to do it manually with a hex editor:

Quote:
The actual fix entails the following...

European Air War NO CD fix hex edit
-----------------------------------
1. Search for: C0 0F 8C 20 00 00 00 8D
Replace with: C0 90 90 90 90 90 90 8D

(Occurs once in EAW v1.0 and twice in EAW v1.1)

2. Edit EAW.INI
Search for: Debug Path=
Replace with: Debug Path=.\

I think Mark has both the No CD 1.2 patch and Jaeger's 1.2 no CD patch, which is where the above info came from.

Cheers!

Thanks CJ for posting that! I think he's been following those directions. The Jaeger replacement exe should be the one I have. Plus there is a patcher program too as a separate DL.

One thing I forgot to mention is once you clear the registry of eaw.exe entry's, then run the game's exe directly (rather than by a shortcut) by clicking on the EAW.EXE twice.

Thanks for helping..... CJ I did the 1 through 5 with the exception of 4 I don't have the 1.2 no cd is there one at Sandbaggers??I seem to have run it before without the cd but don't remember what exe I used all I did remember was the ini edit which I copied the debug lines over from one of my other ini's ..I'm trying to get it running to fly on-line.At least it runs with the cd and maybe with a different exe I won't need windower ,,I think I had the 7117 error before,,Also all my installs have a jerky mouse and windower cures it.I set the res in windower to 1280x1024 uncheck "run in window" and get a full screen.
Next step is throw in OAW and try things out.

Russ I think that the best one to use is the 1.26e exe.
This is a 1.2 exe modified by Sydbod, with a "no CD" patch and the "cannot run in NT" patch.
I think it was released with "OAW unified" in an "E folder"

Thanks Tony ..I'll check it out..A group I'm with might be using 1.2..Not sure right now but wanted to be ready which ever version we end up using..Looked at OAW nothing there ..Going to check out some of my old cd's..Hopefully we will go with something else.

Went to Sandbaggers found a couple to fix the 7217 error Sybods and yours didn't need the cd but menu screens were Psychedelic thought I was back in the 60's...Also found the 1.26 colors cleaned up but bad menus with no background..I will try starting from scratch but hopefully we will use something else..But todays Sunday usually I put on some music,,cook and fly all day good for the soul

Hell even stranger found a modified 1.2a exe..Asks for the cd click continue and it runs a 1.2a version.,Think it's a good day to flt 1.4 and 1.5

All the pre-7217 fix exes will need to be run via the windower smile

Windower works well for me I don't get the jerky mouse and with a few adjustments runs close to full screen. My native res is 1280x1024 but overflows the screen a bit dropped it down in the main windower screen unchecked run in window to 1080x824 fits great.

I didn't require it on Win7, I didn't even know what the DirectDrawWindower was. If it wasn't for Win7 allowing v1.2 to run natively, I wouldn't have ever been back into this game. Just the colors where messed up on the DD menu screens but a special Win7 reg fix corrected that.

Now with Win10 it runs natively too, and without the color problems.

The key is make sure your reg is clean of EAW.EXE entries and to patch all the way to 1.2 before running it.

I'll give that a try Mark I looked at my reg earlier and it had a whole gang of EAW entries,,I do remember running clean 1.2 with no windower in the past..Might have been right after I had to reinstall my OS win7 so the registry was clean
