With today's state of cinema, that's rather a plus in my book.

"The Arrival" kinda looks like the thinking man's version of "Independence Day". smile

Or an overblown CGI version of Contact. smile

I really, really liked Contact until the very end. I found that ending to be rather uninspiring and dull IMHO. The build up to the galactic journey was a lot more interesting than the journey itself.

Yeah, they kinda dropped the ball on that.

Also, although I liked the idea of the lack of telemetry, I was disappointed that they lacked the audacity to end on that note, but doubled-back at the very end with the "18 hours of static".

This could be more like The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Or Childhood's End.
Or any of a dozen other stories.

Until we know where the story goes beyond "aliens arrive, we try to talk, big action ensues" you really can't judge.

Trailers are by and large irrelevant. They are indicative of the skill of the trailer editor, not the film's quality.

Just flip the Independence Day ships on the edge and, presto!...Arrival ship.

That's what happens when you let a physicist write a Sci-Fi novel.

Carl Sagan is always a better read on non fiction.

I've not read the book the film is based on so that ending really took me by surprise and not in a good way.

The book ending is a lot more SF. I've not read it since before the film came out, actually. I should read it again.

I'm currently rereading Childhood's End. It was written in 1953 but takes place (the beginning anyway) in the mid-70s. Then it's 50 years until the next major part of the book, so mid-2020's.

One of the themes in Contact was the idea of faith. In the book, Eleanor's faith in physics in questioned by a simple experiment (the pendulum for those who have read the book). Even so she is generally skeptical about Palmer's faith (actual religious faith that is).

I thought it was a great move storywise to have the entire journey result in Eleanor clinging to her own faith in the face of public and professional hostility. It was kind of cool.

yeah, I liked the faith aspect of the movie and her character arc in that regard.

Me too!

Once I thought it through I "got" most of it, but then I saw a clue that explains something that was not obvious:

The flashback scenes...

Click to reveal..

.... are NOT flashbacks.

The flashback scenes are actually flash forwards. We aren't glimpsing her tragic past... she and the audience, are seeing visions from her future, courtesy of the visitor giant squids. At least that's for SOME of those scenes. I'll have to watch again to understand if they are all flashforwards or if some are flashbacks.

I'm still unclear of the timing of her marriage and daughter... I thought she said she was a widower during the "present" time of the movie, but I think she didn't know Jerremy Renner before, fell in love after the movie ends, marriage, have a little girl, older girl gets cancer, Renner gets pissed when told Amy knew it would happen because he's science and might have saved her cancer, girl dies.

Now... this is the same director who did "Sicarios", and "Prisoners", and I really enjoyed them a LOT along with Arrival.

Denis Villeneuve, from small town Quebec, and doing many indie films on tight budgets.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Villeneuve

Turns out, the people who created Blade Runner have created an apparently great script for a worthy sequel... and they have entrusted the directing to Denis!

Here he is, in a genuine conversation (meaning it's not one of those canned "media circuit puff pieces") talking a bit about his movies, and also about how he sees Blade Runner:

And now I want to see his other movies!

Could be an up and comer as a director..As long as he is a bit more serious than Luc Besson did after the 5th Element.

What didn't you like about the ending? It was very thoughtful and realistic, if you consider the technological and developmental gap between man and the aliens. I don't think the ending could have been any better.

It's been a while since I saw the series and read the novel, so I can't remember if the same reason for humanity's reaction to the Overlords is given at the end.

Just watched it last night. Better then I thought it would be. The ending while she was
talking to the Chinese General was interesting.

It's one of those movies I feel like I have seen before. Not "Contact", but some other movie.

Figured out the twist about half way through. The one thing I liked is the whole, Tool can be translated to Weapon/Use of Chess, debate.
