It looks interesting. I had no idea who Doss was until I read the Wiki page on him just now.
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
Looks pretty interesting, hopefully won't be too anti-war preachy and will focus on the bravery of the guy and the other soldiers, but being that it's directed by Mel Gibson it could be good (Braveheart) or could be a mess (The Passion of the Christ).
I look forward to seeing this. I loved Braveheart and I loved the Passion of the Christ. Especially Passion. Its an excellent film. I also really liked Apocalypto. And I also like Mel Gibson. This looks like another great Gibson film once again bringing to the cinema something worth celebrating.

Supposedly it is very faithful to the real story, and Mel Gibson does know his stuff about film making.
So refreshing that - once in a (rare) while - someone has the guts to make an original, non-reboot film.
And, from what I read (90% positive reviews according to Rotten Tomatoes), a very good film as well.
Let's hope that all of that critical praise actually translates into good box office attendance.

It's an adaptation, just like so many films are. In this case, the adaptation of a historical event, but still the writers didn't "come up" with it because it's not fictional.
Is the first film about an event somehow superior to all those that follow it just because it did it first?

"Original" as not a reboot/re-imagining of an established franchise/film/universe, or retelling of the exact same story.
As far as I am aware, this is the first motion picture about Doss, so that makes it an "original movie".
Re-releasing the same car model with small changes and/or minor upgrades versus making a completely new car model from a previously drawn original blueprint.
The studio could have easily greenlit Saving Privat Ryan 2: You've got (Army Postal Service) Mail, or re-imagine Saving Privat Ryan in an Iraq setting instead. *shudder*
[God, I hope I didn't give some bored studio exec browsing this board an idea.]

According to IMDB, the production budget was 45 million so it stands a decent chance of making a modest profit. I don't see this film doing much business in the international market.

Any word on the marketing budget? Considering the relative lack of advertising so far, not that high I suppose.

Why? Because the film is about an American WWII war hero? Even Flags of Our Fathers almost made as much internationally as domestic (32 million , with 33 million domestic). SPR was a huge international success, The Thin Red Line made twice as much internationally than domestic.
Of course, it all depends on the definition of "doing much business".

Thin Red Line. Pretentious. Boring. Did I mention pretentious? Boring?
WORST. MOVIE. EVER.
