To be fair this film is based on a fantasy comic book so there is no pretense of any historical accuracy. Think of this as the Chinese version of "300".

Production companies are funny. The mindset seems to be, no matter how many copycat productions of one single, inexplicably successful movie tanked (even the official sequel to "300"), we'll keep churning out more. Sooner or later, one has got to be a hit. smile

Is that movie a mod for that horrible "47 Ronin" movie with Keanu (as a...Samurai)?

Well, maybe the Chinese market (I presume that is the production's main target market?) will like it.

BTW, who thought "Matt Damon" when they were casting for this film? hahaha

From a purely business perspective it makes total sense since like it or not, Damon is a box office draw.

It's the same exact reason why Tom Cruise was cast of von Stauffenberg in "Valkyrie" instead of using some unknown German actor. Unknown to US audiences at least.

From a purely creative perspective though, yes the casting of Damon for this film is silly.

I did mean "Damon" specifically, instead of any other western A/B-list actor with maybe a little more pedigree in that specific genre. When I hear "specially bred warrior type" I don't automatically think "Matt Damon". smile

I don't have anything against Matt Damon, BTW. I liked him in most of his films, and I am looking forward to the upcoming Bourne film with him.

But wouldn't that "wall" movie be predestined for Dwayne Johnson (for example) in the title role?

Maybe but I get the impression from the trailer that the producers were going for a more "serious" approach to their film instead of marketing it as a purely action-driven movie. Had the latter been the case then I can easily see Dwayne Johnson being cast.

Just compare the trailer for this film with "The Scorpion King". "The Scorpion King" was full of campy B movie moments and humor which is something that I doubt will be in "The Great Wall".

Ok, Tom Hardy, then. smile

Or, if they want more brooding, Christian Bale. biggrin

BTW, I still am dumbfounded why they didn't cast The Rock for that "Conan" remake. He would have been perfect for the role. IMO Jason Momoa was too skinny to be a convincing Conan.

Of course, "Conan the Barbarian" was another one of those movies that did not need a remake/failed reboot.

Completely agree. Heck, just the brilliant Basil Poleidouris score for that film should have automatically made any reboot a waste of time.

Matt Daemon's movie "The Martian" was a hit in China (due to the scenes with Chinese space agency, I guess), so same as in the west, high grossing actors are cast in preference to a more convincing/matching cast.

Basically this is an experiment on selling our actors as a product to Chinese consumers.

...Japan already knows it works.

Right. It actually makes more sense from a business perspective to use Arnold for a commercial in Japan instead of using some rookie Japanese actor who mostly does commercials.

Oh yeah, and I hope Japan never changes. We really like them all weird and stuff. biggrin

At least 3 actors from that 2015 list would have been a better choice than Damon for that specific role, IMO. And Damon isn't even on that list. smile

It's probably the other way round and Damon's management tried to land him a leading role in a Chinese production to increase his market value over there.....beyond the Great Wall.

That is a very good point. A marketing strategy.
