Greetings All,

Googled till my fingers bled, searched this forum to no avail, me an' some guys from school err sorry I digress...

I was happily flying 128E Instant Mission (P47D escorting bombers) on W7 at 30fps, very occasionally dropping to 20fps, then 'upgraded' to W10 (before July 29) and now only get 20fps, admittedly rock solid.

I've installed W10 x64 drivers for the motherboard and tried to install the latest drivers from AMD (non-whql-64bit-nieg-radeon-crimson-16.2.1-win10-win8.1-win7-feb27) for my now legacy vid card. Strangely (...?) I seem to have the same drivers I had with W7 - 15.200.1062.1004. And even though I've uninstalled from Control Panel and when that didn't work used amdcleanuputility.exe then cleaned the registry with CCleaner and installed the new driver 'successfully', I still have the same drivers. But that's maybe topic for another thread....

Anyways, point is, can anyone recommend drivers for an old'ish (2011) AMD Radeon?

Hopefully my updated sig should have my system specs.

Cheers,
Ray

ps - can't friggin' believe EAW is still going! Did the IL2 thing - yeah that was good but I never got the sweaty palms like 2v2 EAW smile Looking forward to getting shot down again smile S! to everyone keeping it alive!!

Hi RayWhipped.

What are your game graphic settings?

Glide is best these days.

D3D is a bit slower.

If you run in Glide, you will need the Nglide Wrapper from here:

Supports EAW 1.29.exe, Drop in and Play Technology. wink

I cannot answer your question re- drivers, but I am wary of reported frame rates.
If I use my W7 drive and press Ctrl-G I get 60 fps
However, in W7 I get garbled map graphics on offline selection screens so to avoid that I use the d3d windower.
Using the windower I get 30 fps, but no obvious difference in performance.
If I use my W10 drive I do not need the windower and I get 30.

My suspicion is that there is something in the W10 code that is similar to something in the windower code (which is why I do not need it in W10), and that although the reported rate is 30 it is really 60.

Yup, Win10 slows down the game from Win7. It has to be the new compatibility layer(or fix) applied to the game.
The reported frames are correct, I wouldn't use the same res you did while using win7 or bomber formations will decrease the fps, especially with the tail gunners all shooting. You just dont want to go below 15 or even 20fps.
Here's some tests I performed:
http://eaw.neocities.org/eaw-known-video-problems.html#win10

As far as an AMD vid driver I would go directly to amd/ati web site and use there selection menus to download the correct latest win10 driver. You vid card maybe a Legacy item by now.

I agree with Tony FPS is not the be all end all judge on how EAW is running..I like to use it as a general tool when trying new drivers/old drivers or deciding what to turn up or down like clouds etc..for comparison. My final gauge is if the girl is flying smooth or choppy. As much as I would like to use Win 10.It still is choppy as hell even at everything on low.Right now Win 7,,windower and 1.50 hits the sweet spot so I'll be enjoying myself.

I just did a couple of W10 tests in d3d

1024x768: 48-50 FPS

Native resolution 1920x1080: 30 FPS

In glide it was up to 60.

Other considerations:
Glide has to be set to 1024x768 in the "eaw.ini" and then to the window size you want in the nGlide configurator.
If a larger window is selected then there has to be scaling, and this can distort some things if the screen ratio is not 4:3

Similarly in d3d although I got a higher FPS in 1024x768 my picture was full screen (1920x1080) and quite distorted in scaling from 4:3 to 16:9

I use FPS to judge performance. Never touch any in game detail settings other to max them out. Those settings are for very old computers and experiments.

If I was getting 60FPS in Win7 then it drops to 43FPS in Win10 with the same hardware, then something changed with the vid drivers and os compatibility fixes or layer.

Either way, when playing and the game is not smooth anymore, then I examine the FPS either using the in game counter or an external performance counter, the FPS dropping to 22 will have noticeable lag in the movement of the game. In Win7 if it dropped from 60 down twenty six frames(34fps), I wasn't worried because I had enough frames per sec to spare. Win10 I don't have much to spare as it does get laggy sometimes.

Around 15 FPS the game is nearly unplayable, the AI acts up and movement is jumpy.

Thanks for your replies. It's one of the things I loved about this community 15 years ago and I'm happy to see the spirit still alive smile

Col. G - I have everything maxed out. Figured if my AMD K6 2-500 and low end 15yo graphic card ran fine at medium in 2000, this quad core and 5yo mid range card would eat it. Glide worked, went from 20fps to 29-42fps, thanks for the link. Interestingly even though eaw.ini is 1680x1050 it looks like 1024x768 in Glide, switch back to D3D and it's 1680x1050.

As an aside, since I installed the wrapper I occasionally get a mouse pointer smack bang in the middle of the screen - really annoying in padlock. Anyone else get this or am I just lucky?

Mark - rgr, have the last driver AMD made for this now legacy card. And I agree, what's important is how smooth it is and I can't feel any difference between D3D 1680x1050@20fps and Glide 1024x768@29-42fps. I so much more like the wider FOV I get at 1680x1050 zoomed right out, and it does not waver from 20fps regardless of anything, so I'm gonna stick with that... Got some screenshots but don't seem to have the option to post them.

Jel - I just noticed both your screenshots have the same FOV, and I can't see much difference in the quality. When I'm in 1024x768 I get jagged edges and planes at a distance (zoomed out) are just black lines until they get quite a bit closer. Interesting...

Thanks again

You need to set the Nglide Configurator. By default the setting is 1024x768, which is what your seeing. Change the Screen Resolution to your desired one 1680x1050. You just might get some screen distortion, with some settings, so a bit of experimentation might be needed.

The mouse arrow is something I've seen, but not for a while. Change the ini name to ini1, and re run EAW so it makes a new default ini. Resetting it sometimes removes glitches, and by renaming the old one, you still have your original settings.

Good luck.

In the sreenies I was flying more or less the same mission in UAW150 at different screen resolutions.
The screenshots are always saved at the eaw.ini screen resolution. If that is 1024x768 then the BMP saved is 1024x768.
So if the game is running in full screen on a 1920x1080 monitor the picture is stretched, and distorted. The screenshot looks OK because it has not been stretched.
If the eaw.ini setting is more than 1680x1050 then SimHQ reduces the size of the uploaded JPG to 1680x1050. So with an ini setting of 1920x1080, the BMP is 1920x1080, the JPG you upload is 1920x1080, but the JPG displayed is compressed to 1680x1050, so some quality is lost.

I am getting a disastrous frame rate drop approaching bombers in Glide in W10:

In d3d there is a drop, but the game remains playable:

Frame rate drop from reported 30 to 20 but no problems:

Some solutions for the mouse arrow problem:

1. Right click on the "eaw.exe" and launch as administrator.
2. Right click on the "eaw.exe" and pin it to the taskbar.
3. Launch EAW via the d3dwindower
4. Launch EAW via a button on the "DirSetPicker"

wink

That low frame rate with glide seems to have been some sort of aberration. For an online session yesterday I reinstalled UAW150V3, and flew using glide. That terrible drop did not occur. I have a theory about what caused it which I am about to test smile

Rgr that - had it set to 1680x1050 but still seeing 1024x768, go figure... Anyways, even though the Ctrl+G is showing only 20fps, it's smooth as so I'm happy smile

And the arrow thing gets fixed with a reboot, luckily it doesn't happen too often.

Thanks again for your help!
