Wow. That is some luck, happenstance, and good research rolled up into one.
Can you fathom being reunited with someone you hadn't seen in over 70 years??

Awesome. And I love the 'squadron pool' paint schemes.
What kind of car is that? What does it matter? When I drive it, I'm Steve McQueen

There was a recent development regarding this aircraft. One of the pilots who flew it, Ferrill Purdy, was unable to attend the August monthly event that showcased this Corsair. Michele Spry the author who found out the Corsair's lineage started a GoFundMe drive to pay for the aircraft to be flown to Columbia Missouri. She was able to raise the $28,000 necessary to pay for the flight in less than 60 days!! Anyone in the Columbia, MO area this weekend will be able to see the aircraft and Lt Col Ferrill Purdy at the Columbia Regional Airport on Saturday October, 15th. With your help I am proud to announce that together we raised the $28,000 goal that was needed to bring the Planes Of Fame Air Museum to Columbia, MO! I hope you will mark your calendars to come to our FREE public event held at Columbia Regional Airport on Saturday October, 15th! The event starts at 10:00 AM where you will get a chance to meet Lt. Col. Ferrill A. Purdy and this 75 year old Corsair F4U-1A that he flew twice during World War II! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Wheels

The event was attended by over 200 people today. Emotions run high as WWII fighter pilot reunites with his planeCOLUMBIA Seated in a wheelchair on the tarmac at Columbia Regional Airport, Lt. Col. Ferrill Purdy proclaimed that he had waited long enough for his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. "I want to pat the belly of that plane," the 94-year-old proclaimed on Saturday. Michele Spry smiled and wheeled Purdy just behind the right wing of the Corsair F4U-1A, serial No. 17799, parked a few feet away. Grinning, Purdy reached his hand out and tapped the body of the plane 10 times, finishing with a sharp salute. He had flown the plane in 1944 over the Marshall Islands when he was a pilot during World War II. The plane ended up in a museum in Chino, California, 1,700 miles from Columbia where Purdy lives. Spry, who became close to Purdy while writing about his years as a fighter pilot during the war, spent seven weeks raising money to fly the Corsair to Columbia from California. Two weeks ago she hit her goal of $28,000. And this weekend, Purdy was reunited with the plane. ---------------- Read the rest of the article using the link above. Wheels
