Nord, France.
Yesterday was celebrated the centenary of this bloody diversion battle fought 80 km north of Somme battlefields.
They had a quite active museum there (and it is a shame that I haven't visited it yet), and for the ceremony, the 5000 Poppies association, with the help of Australians and locals, decorated the battlefield in a very nice way:

(French is flag half-staff, because of the national mourning after Nice attack. The 5000 Poppies association added tricolore Poppies in memory of the recent french victims-a really kind gesture)

On the left, a part of a german Blockhaus, maybe destroyed after a mine explosion.

I find that sculpture one of the most moving of them all.

Oh that I was back in the dear old PBI.
With no more Triplanes on me tail, nor tracer tracing by.
And no more flames and clickerty-clack and no more blooming sky,
And only a couple of feet to fall whenever I want to die.

Agreed Dej, that sculpture really touches a chord. Thanks for sharing this, actionjoe.

Thanks for that ActionJoe.

I really need to get over there and pay my respects at some point. I, like many people, had often overlooked WWI. I had always thought of it as a four year slugfest compared to the broad sweeping WWII

To a great degree WOFF led me to explore the wider world of the Great War, and I feel a greater appreciation for what those men went through. I think our culture is poorer for having forgotten their sacrifice.

It's good to see some remember!

Deacon
