Well the .50 cal bullet is a pretty stable shape. Reminds me of how the X1 was designed after this bullets profile.

Call me crazy. I never heard or even thought of this "myth". How on earth would a near miss do anything to you apart from hearing that crack wizz sound way to close. Brown trouser time.

Must have thought the vapor trail was lethal or something.

It's more of a "thud-crack" to me biggrin

There's just simply not enough mass in a .50 round for the shockwave following to do any real damage if it comes close to you...

Although you have to remember, where there's one .50 cal he probably has friends playing follow the leader. Those might hurt.

No idea if a .50 BMG near miss will hurt you but a couple of 8mm Mauser rounds going past your head can make you hurt yourself.

I guess it all depends. If its a near miss of your heart (and is it only hit your chest) then it will hurt you biggrin

I have heard this myth before, but I don't remember where I heard it from. I think it was during the Gulf War on CNN when "Hydrostatic Shock" was the new buzz word being thrown around by the media.

Sounds a lot like the nonsense attributed to the 5.56x45 round, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard someone say stuff like you can shoot someone in the ankle and it'll come out at the hip or shoulder, blah blah blah, I could hold my own powerball lottery.

It was designed to tumble and wound, that way you can kill the medic!

Stupid-as-hell urban myths abound in the gun world, way too many treat it like a knitting circle versus a skill to learn/refine. It's why I avoid "gun people" unless I know them and know they're competent wink

I hate that term.

Is not a "near miss" actually a hit? If it nearly missed, it hit.

Shouldn't it be a near hit? Or a close miss?

A hit is a hit and and miss is a miss. Near hit implies you hit the target but not in the intended critical area. Near miss is a miss that was damn close to hitting.
