Why is Canada's population so low? I'm assuming it's mostly due to the overall cold climate? Canada is the second largest country in the world and its population is less than that of California. From a demographic and geographical standpoint I just find that fascinating.

It;s kind of interesting that the vast majority of the population is within a few hundred miles of the U.S border.

I would think that's mostly due to the climate. What's the largest northernmost city in Canada? I think it's Edmonton.

If we put up stringent border controls with Canada, would that make them all wildlings?

Miserable country - utterly freezing for 6 months of the year (literally, -20 to -30c in winter is routine in most of Canada's big cities), plus the crippling darkness due to the northern latitude, it gets dark at 3 or 4 in winter.

In cities like Vancouver the weather is god-awful, rain for at least 6 months of the year and some years summer just doesn't even happen, it's just constant rain. There is also the invasion of Chinese / HK / Taiwanese investors / immigrants who have made it impossible for housing to be bought in that city, so while it may be growing on paper it's economically wrecking the city for anyone who is not a Chinese investor.

Then there is the government which taxes your tax and then taxes both taxes on top of that. Sending a $100 item across the Canadian border (From anywhere) has the potential to cause a 30% duty fee to the recipient. Hard to do business profitably when the government is eating all of your money just to fund more customs and tax officials..!

Canada also took shortcuts and instead of becoming a manufacturing powerhouse like the USA did after WW2, Canada sold its natural resources to foreign markets and closed down most of its major research and manufacturing projects during the 50's and 60's. All the R&D talent left for the USA. Ditto for many other industries, see brain drain of the 90's and 2000's from Canada to the US. Even now a very significant percentage of professionals like lawyers, pilots and doctors move out of Canada as soon as they've got a degree in hand.

There are of course, historical reasons why Canada is still small - probably the most important is that most Canadian land is worthless, it cannot be used for growing food because the quality is either too poor or it is frozen for too long for it to be profitable. When settlers were moving westward, I think that most of them probably wisely chose to go south to warmer climates and more predictable agriculture than risk freezing to death in the 9 month long winter. There may or may not be valuable natural resources under some Canadian land but those are not renewable and may not even be accessible in our lifetimes.

Long and short of it, it's just not that great a place to live if you're someone who is looking for a happy, comfortable life. You can live in relative economic stability, but you will be freezing cold for half the year, and your cars will be wrecked every few years by salt from the roads. The US has more to offer economically and geographically. After I left Canada and traveled around the world, it was an eye opener. Canada has a few good points but to an immigrant whether wealthy or poor, the US just does most things so much better, so everyone ends up there, or if they don't like the US, somewhere in Europe.

Thanks for that post Longbow. I found it to be very informative.

Canada historically placed a lot of restrictions on immigration, in keeping with its elite's traditional national priority of "stability first", going so far as to deport the unemployed.

AFAIK It was only after the mid to late '60s where restrictions eased and only within the last 25-30 years where the floodgates opened and the government really started trying to make up for lost time. Close to 1/3rd of the population was added within that time!

The cold and snow are strong points to me. Even Maine gets way hotter than I like, if I could find a place where the summertime highs never get over 70 I could easily deal with 6 solid months of the dead of winter.

I just want a state that stays 70 degrees year round. Maybe a few months of winter.

I thought it hardly snowed there? Only once had I seen high levels of snow. Felt fine walking down the streets when it snowed a lot (cars buried in snow) about 6 something years back wearing just a jacket/hoodie and a shirt under. But my understanding is that was an abnormality for Vancouver, all the winter tires/chains were entirely sold out at all the Canada Tire and Walmarts as if they were unexpected. I've never spent many months there for a time, but summer always seemed similar to the Bay Area to me. Interesting to read your experience though.

I remember going to hockey tournaments as a kid. Going up the 401 during snowstorms, I thought a few times we were going to die. Montreal seemed to be the coldest, dampest, place I have ever been. But I will take the cold any day over the heat.

I find the climate contrasts of Norway and Canada interesting.

It is amazing what the Gulf Stream can do with warming up a country/coastline.
I'm currently in Narvik here in Norway shooting some competitions, and it was 25C outdoors yesterday.

Narvik is positioned at 68,43 degrees north. (Or as far north as Prince Charles Island in Canada)

Geez, just came by to check some tech-specs and saw this.

Goodness knows we have our problems here, but Longbow's post was way, way off.

I've lived here for 52 years and I love it. Good quality of life and a wonderful environment. I work outside all year round. I've shovelled roofs at -40F and cut trees at 110F. It might not be an environment for the lighthearted, but it is a widely varied and stunningly gorgeous. And I would never want to live anywhere where the temperature doesn't hit -30 once in a while. Nothing like those long walks in the deep sub-zero night, dressed up in a spacesuit, with the crystal clear skies and the incredible silence that comes with that temperature drop. It's like being on another planet.

And even an ill-educated shmoo like myself can have a home and raise a family in a safe and modern lifestyle in Canada. Both my kids are in college, my eldest is going to start her second year of medical school in the fall, and thanks to government programs that make school affordable, we can afford to do this on a somewhat modest two income household.

Have we got problems in Canada? Of course. Lots of them. But to say this is a "miserable country" is as ridiculous as it is untrue. This is the second largest country in the world, to write it all off as "miserable" is thoughtless at best.

The view from my deck. Not too miserable. wink

Question everything!

Throughout most of Canada, you actually get both, hot, humid {if short} summers as well as the cold winters. I don't mind the dry cold but damp cold as seen in places like Montreal and Ottawa is nasty!

Anyway I don't find Canada a bad place to live per se but the marketing image is a lot better than the current reality of it, and you have to be old enough for the senior's discount to have experienced it before that was the case.
